So true. (Tw: eating disorders) My brother played football, offensive line, through college so he always had to be more big and beefy... so when it stopped and he graduated, he decided to lose weight and “get skinny and ripped” but it got worse and worse and so long story short we came to find out he was anorexic and orthorexic and also I’d sometimes hear him doing purging the rare times he ate, all his early twenties and then it got better and worse as he got into his later twenties. But like, especially the first couple of years, it was really really bad for certain times. As bad as anyone else with an ed and equally or more dangerous bc he was six feet tall and definitely needed WAY more calories, especially w the compulsive exercising. Luckily now he’s in his mid-thirties and he’s been a healthy weight for about six years (or even a little healthy chub sometimes more lately haha) and he’s starting to seem truly happy the past few years and he doesn’t seem as obsessed over food. He even used to do that thing where they cook you big elaborate meals and watch you eat it but don’t eat any of it themselves.. Like vicarious eating, and I guess it’s just part of the food obsession idk. But yeah, as I said he was as bad as any girl or woman would be because it’s the same illness no matter who has it... Men have it much easier in a lot of ways, but not when it comes to admitting their feelings or being able to express what they’re going through inside. I know it’s getting a little better so hopefully that will continue, and not just for artistic or “sensitive” guys but for jocks and everyone else too.

I am glad your daughter got you into 5SOS you will love this band. I got my mom into 5SOS and I seen 5SOS live 2 times. I’ve been in the 5SOS army for 10 years now and it’s the best thing I’ve ever been in. before I met 5SOS I was in deep depression I wouldn’t eat sleep or even talk if my teachers tried to get me to talk I would just write it down whatever the answer was. I would try to commit suicide because I am mentally disabled and I get bullied because of it and the kids would record me saying hey look it’s the stupid retarded Autistic girl and they would tell me to go kill myself because I am worthless. I cried every single night and day I cried myself to sleep I would even look at myself in the damn mirror due to the bullying and I would just wear hoodies all the time to hide my tear streamed face. I hated going to school I tried even dropping out of school because of the bullying. One day the bullying got to me and I almost cut myself till I heard a video from the boys of saying don’t cut yourself it’s not worth it you are loved and appreciated. I was sobbing and I dropped the razor and threw it away these boys saved my life and I thank them for that

I feel like Ash really needed this. Even in the early years of 5SOS when he was the cheery happy member of the group and would put a positive spin on everything, you could tell that he had inner struggles but he pushed that aside, especially being the eldest of the group he was the "banddad", which likely came from his home environment growing up. Despite growing up without his father, and having troubles in his homelife while growing up and having alot of responsibility over his younger siblings, he powered on through it all because he's a strong individual. I remember him saying in a solo Aussie radio interview in 2015 how he even would stay behind in secondary school to help out with maintenance work, and the dinnerladies would give him free food because sometimes he'd not have a good packed lunch to bring with him. The boy didn't complain about not having a good packed lunch given to him, just get on with it, but was grateful his teachers looked out for him. By 2015 you could see his demons taking their toll on him with certain ways he acted around fans and in interviews, and likewise as the years went by alot of people commented about how he was less talkative in interviews or came off as rude in interviews. He blatantly has alot of struggles and inner demons. I'm so glad he's used this time of quarantine as self-reflection and a means of creative expression so that he can help himself overcome his problems and struggles. it’s the way that this portrays actual real life struggles in men that we don’t see as often as we do in women. and the line that will be embedded in my head is “hey skinny skinny don’t you think about the future” which makes me think like he’s claiming himself as the shape he wants and he will not think about what body changes happen in the future. and him breaking the mirrors is so beautiful!! he’s destroying the constant battle that these men also fight with their self image, the mirror can’t tell you youre pretty nor ugly. but him bashing them and bowing down at the end as if that was his demonstration, is beyond incredible. and this is the reason why this is just art. well done ashton my boy, well done.

This video hits really close to home and it's a bit disturbing. To be honest I've never really heard anything about the struggles Ashton could have been fighting against, and this music video is him opening his heart in front of the world. I believe the yellow line on the floor he has such an hard time to get through is the instability of the recovery from an eating disorder, and the fact that even after passing this line (with a lot of troubles) he decides to go back to finally beat up his demons in order to be really "cured" is intense and troubling. I'm so so proud of you and so grateful to see that I wasn't wrong to look up to 5sos as role models and idols. We barely hear from men when it comes to body positivity and ED and I believe this music video is making a strong change and is some kind of a turning point for any little boy, teenager or man watching it. (And basically everyone). You're such and inspiration. I love this with all my heart. By the way, if you're reading this and you have not eat yet today, please do. Your body will be grateful. Even the tiniest bite of anything. You're beautiful and loved, and as a french rapper once said, i don't get why you're worried by your wheigh, it's only more of you're beautiful self. Ok so I think I just noticed something; I think he's talking about the different stages of self-obsession or obsessing over your image: 1. Him trying to follow the line, setting your goals, for example not eating much, having a diet, etc. 2. Falling of the line, failing at the attempt, for example eating much more than you thought you should 3. He starts singing more desperately, but doing nothing, which means he doesn't know what to do anymore, he just has doubts: "I wanna eat, I wanna stay thin, I wanna dance but I gotta stay in" 4.He goes back to the start, tries again but fails, and instead of going back to the start he lies on a mirror, which I'd interpret as giving up, just criticizing and hating yourself but doing nothing about it. 5. Finally, he takes the hammer that he's gonna destroy everything with, not just the mirrors, but the path he wanted to follow, and that's why it's very light when he takes it but heavier once he has followed (removed) the line with it. I don't know if he was trying to show this, but this is how I interpret it, and I think it's genius. This helps so much, and so many people, thank you Ashton❤️🛐.
