Wolf is the first person on here that I’ve seen say “I need to add dead space for the vocals”….so many other musician/drummers feel the need to “overplay” to show off their music theory and drum skills, but he didn’t. I love it
@jenniferfoster16923 күн бұрын
Yes! That's the songwriter in him, looking at the big picture and how all the pieces fit together, not just his instrument. It was fascinating to see the songwriter side come out while he was 'solving' this challenge of how to make his drum parts best serve the song. Such a pro.

This comment should be higher. Certainly being surrounded by talented musicians is an advantage, but that just provides resources. He still had to put in the hard work to turn those resources into... this. Countless kids born into similar environments never achieve what he has, it's ridiculous to brush it off as just "luck."
@Me041204 күн бұрын
He absolutely is genetically gifted. I got a drumkit too, but I can't arrange a song, or write parts or easily bang out a fill and then play it exactly the same on the spot next take. He clearly has a great musical memory to track what he's doing and arrange his playing to suit the song. I don't have that. Never had that ability. There's other things in life that I'm just naturally good at and don't have to work as hard as others at, but music is not one of them. It's certainly not crazy to think that the son of Eddie Van Halen would have a knack for musicianship.

I feel like he's been taken for granted as in being Eddie's son and Alex's nephew, he was just "born awesome". I don't believe that. While living the rock n roll life with his family did inject in him the attitude to be where he is now, we all may be forgetting how hard he has been practicing all those instruments he plays up to this day. It's not a "talent": it's pure, persistent and relentless hard work and a responsibility he feels to do his own thing instead of resting under his dad's name, which is commendable. What a performance he did here. very good tracking. he used his production skills to mix his own drums live. You can tell by how he approached each section, experimented with them all and knew where to pull back and where to show it off.

I've personally found that learning an instrument (or anything for that matter) is more about repetition. Once you get comfortable with the basics, then you can start injecting your own rhythms, accents, phrasing, etc. Talent to me is more having a natural leaning towards something, rather than just being naturally gifted at something.

This 100%. I hate how everybody talks about him getting the talent from his dad. You get this good (on multiple instruments) from practicing & playing your ass off. There's no DNA shortcut.

great comment. in an interview after the Taylor Hawkins tribute, he discussed having to grab the CDs for the songs Dave wanted him to do, sit down and learn them note for note. the image that conjures up is a musician who works to perfect his skill and takes it damn serious. Alex's recent book "Brothers" shows the lineage and the mindset, all the way through it. Wolf's grandfather Jan, is the influence we see in all of them.

@@kevincason5309 Yes, spot on. Alex's book is very enlightening, shows real pride in musicianship, hard work & professionalism, all learned from their father & the other musicians around him. Obviously Wolf's dad & uncle modeled those lessons well for Wolf, too. And it was very noticeable during this episode that Wolf is a songwriter, not just an instrumentalist. Not all musicians compose entire songs, and Wolf very clearly approached this as a songwriter & drummer, you could see his though processes as he was working things out. It was very impressive.

Not knowing much(anything) about Wolfgang, I wasn’t even aware he played the drums. I liked it. Seems like a down to earth, easy to hang with, normal dude. But I also get a vibe that he takes the music seriously. Good job

I always knew he was great but in this controlled environment, he went up huge in my books!!! Bravo!!! And that smile is such a reflection of how he feels at the moment!!! He needs to do more of this, we are quite a few who want to see him play all instrument. Incredible talent!!!

Can we appreciate Wolfs ability to think like a producer while killing it on drums? This guy is phenomenal.
@jenniferfoster16922 күн бұрын
Yes, and think like the songwriter he is, too! He writes all his own songs, besides playing all the instruments on the recordings. It really showed in this video that he was looking at the challenge from the big picture POV, not just drums.

He’s so amazing. Not only a fantastic guitarist like his dad, but he’s an amazing drummer like his uncle. It’s in the Van Halen family blood

@@Hajimodo Alex had a great feel, but Van Halen never had a song like this one. Would be interesting to see what Alex would do if they got him to do one of these. Maybe it would show a different side to his playing.

I’m not a drummer but really love these videos. Apart from seeing such musicianship - I love how positive they always are, so refreshing in this modern world. Everyone is positive, supportive, sees the best in everything, and everyone’s playing- and that leads the drummer of the video to feel comfortable enough to really be on top of their game. I suspect this is also why big names are happy to come on and do this - they know that they’ll be treated well never shown in a bad light, given the space to work out what they want to do - a win win for the performers and us as the audience. Also so nice this never gets framed as a competition which would be tiresome and kill what is so wonderful about these.
