I agree that Ashton is phenomenal on bars, but I believe Martha made the right decision by takin Gabby. It was never even between Gabby and Ashton for that fifth spot, it was between Ashton and Madison. Why would you take two bars specialists when you can take an All-Arounder who is going to put a score on bars that is nearly just as high?

Well, the team has Aly Raisman, Simone Biles, and Laurie Hernandez who are all great all arounders who are reliable for the other events. So the spot was really meant for the specialists.

Kagome Higurashi Not necessarily. Even the 2012 had four All-Arounders and one specialist. If Laurie, Simone, or Aly would've gotten hurt after the first rotation of the TF, Gabby would be twice as reliable on the other three events than Ashton and Madison. Marta picked Gabby because she can do all four apparatuses while Ashton can only do bars and is just fair on beam.

Kagome Higurashi yea but if you are gonna take 2 specialists, why would they specialize in the same event? Madison got a much higher score in trials and thrived under pressure, Ashton basically didn't do any different then any other competition.

GrangerDangerx No it wasn't. USA has a history of being plagued by injury AT the games. Having to fly replacements in last minute, etc. Of course this scenario was a little different but we needed someone who could fill in ANYWHERE should one of the others get injured. Ga by fit that bill. And coming in reigning AA champ was just gravy

MAYBE. not definitely. ashton has a low difficultly compared to the other medalists. she only scored so high in america because typically domestic scoring is higher. if she went, she would have been fighting for bronze.

She can't. She had a back injury in 2014, so she only does bars and beam now. She was never really all that strong on Vault and Floor to begin with, though.

Then Either Ashton or Maddie would have to compete floor and vault. Ashton can't even do floor or vault and Maddie's vault is not very good and her floor isn't all that amazing either. Also what if both Aly and Simone had gotten injured during tf then Ashton would have to compete vault and floor which she hadn't ever done since 2014

She was absolutely NOT robbed. Gabby could do the all around- and could MEDAL in it. She was reigning Olympic AA champion AND reigning world silver medalist in the event. Ashton could ONLY do two events- due to a persistent back injury- and could only be relied on to hit in one of them. The right choice was very much made.

It sucks that Ashton couldn’t have done any more than what she did at Trials on Bars to get a spot on the team, just given the rest of the team make up. She was the best bar worker in the US at this time but it still didn’t matter

She didn’t have the start value unfortunately. Her bars would have barely made finals in Rio, and would never have garnered a medal. Maddie had the equal highest SV in the world, plus she could be put on any other event- Ashton couldn’t. That made all the difference. It’s unfortunate she had so many issues with her back and couldn’t upgrade her bars beyond what she did, but that’s just how it goes sometimes.

Lol it made no sense to take locklear unless they took her instead of kocian. USA is always in contention for TEAM gold and they clearly make that a higher priority than event finals. And if you're trying to win team gold, why in the world would you take 2 people who specialize in bars but literally cannot help in any other event? If you're smart, you wouldn't. And they didn't. You only get 5 girls per team and you have to send 4 girls to AA qualifying round and 3 girls to each event. So you need 4/5 girls to be good at all-around (which kocian is bad at and locklear PHYSICALLY cannot do) and you need 3/5 girls to be good at each individual event. Bars was the WEAKEST event for the 6 top girls at trials so they wanted a 4th AA girl who was ALSO great at bars (because that's where the team was weakest), and Gabby was literally the only person who fit that. She was only used on bars because that's her strongest event (by a lot), but she could be used for other events if better people got hurt. She was basically a way for team USA to have 2 alternates. They don't just choose the best 3 gymnasts for each event, they choose the best well-rounded team that can still do well if someone gets injured. That's probably why locklear wasn't even the team alternate (ragan was because she could reasonably fill in at multiple events. You could argue ragan vs. mckayla skinner, but that's a whole different convo).
