Guys, the guest on my show is an absolute legend of Chess, who has made India proud on a global level. Precisely. Not a word on how informed Ashwin is, how,in contrast to the crass questions Anand was being repeatedly asked during the WC match in Chennai,Ashwin asked some extremely relevant questions related to formats of both the games and not just delve into the already widely discussed achievements of Vishy. What disappoints me is that every Indian seeks recognition in being an India first before anything. This comment section is a case in point.

Thank you so much for bringing Anand on the show. One man who single handedly revolutionized chess in this country. Undoubtedly India's greatest sporting icon. I had the good fortune to travel in the lift for less than a minute in the early nineties. One was able to establish an instant rapport, while I stood there agape in the presence of greatness, Anand was all warmth, down to earth and expressed a genuine interest to understand what I was doing. I wish we celebrate Anand more than what we have done. An outstanding professional, a great human being and a perfect role model.

Ash, try and get GM Peter Svidler on your show, 7 times Russian national chess champ and a legend. He knows a lot about cricket, probably the biggest cricket nerd outside the Commonwealth. You will be blown away by his cricket knowledge, and an engaging, funny personality to boot.

@@MrHitessh In the early days (late 90s and early 2000s) of Internet Chess Club (ICC) there was a super strong GM with moniker 'Tendulkar'. Many thought it was Vishy Anand's secret second account or English GM Nigel Short's account. Only later was it revealed that it was Svidler. Many interesting stories about Svidler, he was even invited as a guest expert in BBC Test Match Special. He loves test cricket, especially when England plays. Once he did Russian radio commentary for some Ashes test in some obscure Siberian radio. He played in Gibraltar (I think) when the organizer promised him batting lessons and a net practice session...you can search for photos and news links. During one of his commentary sessions some 5 years back he talked about the FC league of Zimbabwe, and gave stats of all their top performers, even hardcore cricket nerds from India wouldn't know a thing about what happens in Zimbabwe cricket. He is a walking, talking encyclopedia of cricket. He even expressed his regrets that chess colleagues from Ind/Eng don't follow cricket as passionately as him, so he can't have debates/discussion with them.

I think people underestimate Anand and he is just as humble as he was when he failed to correct the old man on the train. Few examples from this wonderful interview: 1. Just as Anand mentioned that Fisher was responsible for breaking the russian monopoly in Chess, it was Anand who paved the way for Chess in India and Asia. Now India churns out grandmasters routinely. Anand pved the way for that. for Anand to be there still on top is nothing short of mindblowing. Of course he is too nice to take credit for that. 2. The question about rapid chess and why Anand dominates it despite his age: well the correct answer was that Anand is simply on a different level and is a genius when it comes to the shorter forms of Chess. He is one of the Absolute greats ever to have played the game. Its like asking Federer how he manages to defeat opponents despite his age or like asking how Viv Richarda hit all those sixes. But of course Anand wont say that. He stuck to his standard response of “practiced it growing up”. Haha. As if others can get to the same level. 3. Anand was already a legend being rhr first grandmaster the year a young boy called Sachin made his debut in 1989. Sachin then had an illustrious career, and has retired for more than 7 years. And Anand is still going strong successfully competing with people who are multiple decades younger- something that i think Ashwin thought was because Chess was not physical sport. But closer analyais will show that there are not any other examples of such phenomena. Even the great Kasparov retired. Anand’s longevity is in a league of its own and definitely not normal. Attributing it to lesser physicality would be similar to claiming that Sachin played in 200 tests only because he was a batsman and spin bowler ( so less strain). If that were the case, why have others not been able to replicate at the highest level? All in all a great interview. Would be great to see a part 2 focusing on anands preparation routine, his idols while growing up, his thought process when dealing with challenging situations, how he handles loss, how he prepares, how he is able to deal for decades on the road, etc.

once again "Shabash Ash!!!". What a guest? What a true gentleman? He's so humble and soft spoken. Probably why he's at the top of his game because he's calculating and considering even his answers even before you ask the question. Once again, thanks for letting him drive the conversation and you being just a listener. This is one of the most heart warming interviews I’ve ever watched! Thanks a lot, Ash :) Lovely set of questions. I watched this interview on TV and people of all age groups enjoyed it. It just goes to show what an immortal legend Vishy is! It was awesome to see the lighter side of the Tiger of Madras! The only sad thing is that it had to end so quickly. Looking forward for a part 2 🙏🏼

The segment from 30:52 till 33:02 is a golden thing that many ignore in pursuit of getting better at any field. As Vishy said, "It happens or does not happen but you maximize your chances by doing the right things". Also, in one of his earlier lines, he said "The wind was in my favour". Considering both of these things, whatever you all do in any field that you like, at the end of it all just come out happy that you gave your best.

Anand is just such a great level headed person... despite all hia achievements. Cannot say the same for many sportsmen or other super achievers at this level. His very soft tone, his clarity in thought and expression... and above all - his permanent light touch with a self deprecating touch...

This week at 52 years old, Anand came second at grand chess tour in Croatia beating many young grand masters who are half his age including a the challenger to Carlsen at World championship. Guess what, it was rapids and blitz which favours younger guys who can calculate fast. Such a LEGEND !! He speaks so eloquently..

Vishy is definitely one of the greatest Indians to play sports & a great ambassador for the country. As you say, grew up watching him in NIIT ads & playing his games ( they used to publish the games in the Hindu)- True champion. always wanted to meet him but when i did ( in college- maybe 2003/04)- i was so star struck that i couldn't open my mouth.. maybe he sensed it - smiled at me & waited a few seconds before i could say - sir. big fan .. thanked me . To compete among the best with machines ruling the game is a testament to the journey he has travelled - Classical, Rapid, Blitz, Computers, AI/ML etc.
