A five-time World Chess Champion, Vishy became India's first grandmaster at age 18, spurring a chess revolution in the country. Now 53, he is still a world top ten player and has been India's number one ranked player for 37 years. As newer talents emerge and old ones retire, Anand's continued excellence showcases an endurance seldom seen.
Tyler and Vishy sat down in Chennai to discuss his breakthrough 1991 tournament win in Reggio Emilia, his technique for defeating Kasparov in rapid play, how he approached playing the volatile but brilliant Vassily Ivanchuk at his peak, a detailed breakdown of his brilliant 2013 game against Levon Aronian, dealing with distraction during a match, how he got out of a multi-year slump, Monty Python vs. Fawlty Towers, the most underrated Queen song, how far to take chess opening preparation, which style of chess will dominate in the next ten years, how AlphaZero changes what we know about the game, the key to staying a top ten player at age 53, why he thinks he's a worse loser than Kasparov, qualities he looks for in talented young Indian chess players, picks for the best places to eat in Chennai, and more.
Recorded August 7th, 2023.

Great interview. A pleasant contrast to the poorly-informed news media, every single one of whom interviewed Anand about Praggnanandhaa's recent World Cup performance convinced that he was about to win the biggest prize in world chess.

Anand poured his mind out like a bucket of water. Imagine the same questions with anyone else? It would have been boring. What a brilliant yet gentle human. He is a gentle giant.❤

Wonderful interview. Would tend to agree with some comments that this would possibly be the best. The questions showed the depth of research that went in

I think the best interview with Vishy that I ever saw and perhaps even one of the best chess interviews ever. The interviewer seems to find the right balance between the general and the specific, respect and curiosity, historical details and thoughts on the future. Vishy appears particularly comfortable with the entire interaction. A wonderful interview! Glad it was recommended to me since I would probably not have found it on my own. My admiration and respect for Vishy has always been great, but this takes things up another notch or two.

Great psychological pressure by Magnus ! Magnus Carsen's thrusting himself before Pragna, even if it was only for congratulating.. after Nakamura loss was a brilliant move. A subtle way of exerting pressure ! One can see how Magnus went about the congratulations very intently, very deliberately. Even a bit desperately. As if to follow a plan. He knew Pragna was his big opponent now and so Magnus was thrusting and asserting his personality in front of Pragna to distract Pragna's focus away from the approaching game.

A time will soon come, with computing advances such as quantum computing and so on, that the chess will be "practically" solved. However, our capacity to understand and memorize is not going to improve much. I wonder what this gap would do to the chess games played by humans.

Great interview. Why can't the Indian channels/media houses do a simple sane interview like this. There is one idiot;Sagar Shah who constantly screams, exaggerates and interrupts the other person all the time and another idiot is Tanya.
