I honor your honest talk on certain things: playing is different than watching, not bad mouthing players on their wishlist. Indian public upbringing of having separate teams for various formats of the game is a challenge to address by the board. We have more players in supply than the demand for the matches, so the economies of scale are not balanced 😂. So more cricket is an expectation by the public to see games and continue the fan fight army. The wish to make an IPL like the NBA is fine but the key is it's not just the NBA, there are schools, colleges and local township and county cricket games that are popular and have interesting players too. So media focus is needed there.

For bumrah, maybe workload management. But come on ya, that guy deserves to be the captain in all format whenever he plays. That's the kind of respect he earned. Sanju also averages 56 then if Gill with 58 average can play then what's the point for selecting Pant with average of 33 over Sanju? For how long will Pant be picked in white ball over the reason that "He is left hander ..He is X factor" I mean he hasn't delivered in white ball despite getting so many opportunities And in 2023 WC, our top 6 were all right handed batsman and they performed pretty well and if there is need of lefthander in the middle order then Axar and Jaddu can be promoted as they very often are So why Pant was given priority over Sanju???

Ash, you’re saying there aren’t many choices and players need further grooming in leadership, but I think Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul stand out as strong contenders for the vice-captaincy role. Dear Ash point taken and very well explained. Please don’t think that we are coming back to the topic of Rishabh Pant. The issue is he is not a great rotator of strike and his hits are mostly restricted to the leg side where fielders are there in the deep in ODI’s. Sanju as you know is a 360 player hence the issue, nothing personal against RB. Last but not the least Pant has no credentials to show that he has done brilliantly in white ball for India despite being there 7 to 8 yrs !

Shreyas Iyer has demonstrated leadership by winning multiple trophies. Like you said VC is not pathway to Captaincy. By making Shreyas VC who doesnt have any competition in playing XI they would have flexiblity between Gill and Jaiswal(again left handed) but Rohit himself sounded like Jaiswal is not going to play but we selected him based on current performance.

1. England series is the only series before Champions trophy. Karun nair deserves a spot in ODI format no doubt but this series should be considered as a warmup before CT. So it's difficult to try out new options 2. For VC , actually it's suprising to bring in Gill. I still wanted Sreyas Iyer to be VC ahead of others. Since Champions Trophy is such a big stage ICC tournament, maybe instead of appointing young player like Gill as VC, the other alternats for VC role they could have gone with KL Rahul as VC who has experience in leadership roles or even Shreyas Iyer for that matter who has done very well as a captain (understand if bcci doesn't look at him for long term captaincy due to injury concerns). Hi Anna, My queries on squad selection please answer if possible . - Gill vice captain: Why not hardik Pandya since he is certain in XI? Because of Gill vc, he forced to play every match. Jaiswal can’t featured in XI unless other any injury. In my POV, it will better to go with Jaiswal and Rohit as first choice openers because left right combination to tackle new ball and better to have left hander in batting order if Pant not in XI. - Why four spinners and three seamers in squad? It would have been better to go with another seamer since shami and bumrah coming from injury there is chance for any of them gets unfit for any match and also unfortunately if anyone of the three seamer has bad form. It is bettor have another seamer in the mix can be useful to rotate them in the tournament for workload management. It need to be any one of Jedeja or Axer need to make the way for that because they bring mostly same option to the team. I hope there very less chance to play them together. If we get rank turner, We can go with Kuldeep, Axar/Jeddu and washi. What is need of two?

I never commented on any KZbin videos. Since you said you read all the comments, let me put my perspective on having Jadeja and Axar in the team. I think it is time selectors take a tough call of going for one left arm spinner. They both are alike and offer same value proposition to the team. I feel one spot is wasted in the team and it affects the team balance. I see your point that both can play in a match which is again a absurd selection call. They can go with one of them along with Sundar which will make bowling line up far better with so many left handers in opposition teams nowadays. What do you think?

Big Fan. Although I left India 30 years ago, still watch Cricket and enjoy listening to "thinking players" like you (and Gilly, Nass, Athers and KP). Very good analysis. kudos on that. The one point I do want to point out is that both Bhumrah and Shami are returning from injuries. In Boom's case we don't know if he's even going to be fit and also Shami is coming back from a major injury. What if they both are unfit or break down during the tournament, you can't have Harshit Rana be in the 11. Also is Hardik capable of bowling 10 overs fully in the game. Having Siraj as a backup would've been great. Also what kind of message are they sending by dropping him after his incredible workman like efforts in Australia during the Test matches - no matter what, he's taken the highest wickets for India in ODI's over the last 4 years. Either ways, did you see how Pathetically Rohit played in the Ranji match against J&K. I think he is a walking wicket now no matter the format. Happy to be proven wrong. Cheers

Why not be 2 or 3 vice captaincy candidates. Why we need to declare one VC candidate & surprisingly he will not be considered as a future captain.Shreyas, Samson & Bumrah are strong candidates as captains. 3.) Hello Ash, Nobody denies that only 15 players can be selected from the never ending talent pool that India have. It is just that the selection policy is not transparent and clear. Different players seem to be picked on different benchmarks. If you are claiming that the squad be selected based on domestic performance, then Karun Nair would be the first name on the sheet. We don't mind what criteria are used. We just ask that if a particular criterion is used, that it be applied uniformly across all 15 spots and it is made clear as to what the selection policy was. Transparency in selection will be a welcome change.

I like the way you pace and deliver quality information to the audience. Everyone has different views but some template of playing half cooked allrounders over a bowlers should not be preferred. Jaddu and washi are not a great choice to my opinion considering, Dubai pitches and way forward in future. Varun picks wicket in the middle and contain 25 runs from total score. Even in World Cup, after injury of pandya, shami came into picture and bowling looks lethal. Australia going with 4 bowling for test matches and India goes with 5-6 options. Don’t know it’s a stamina issue.

Just curious to know this point. In Indian Team , The management always prefers the best batsman to be the next captain. For eg. Current setup its shubman Gill. Why not the Indian team just look at the leadership skills and appoint the captain. Pandya could be a perfect captaincy material barring Injuries. If we notice all other countries around the world , When Root was the best player in white ball setup Morgan got the captaincy, Same applies for Pat cummins also. Is captaincy treated differently in India ? I am not against Gill , He is the best player in ODI format. But only that point made him to promote Gill as VC ? Strange call. Might be KL is good choice for VC right? He was a VC before and he's in a good form, specially in ODI's. Instead of going for a Youngster(though gill has plenty of exp) who didn't have captaincy experience - KL will be an ideal choice or Iyer maybe as he has good captaincy records(in domestic as well). Yeah maybe there're some questions on his position for Iyer, but he'll definitely start on the 1st Match. So KL might have been an good choice but after hearing Ashwin's perspective, it may be okay to have gill as VC if rohit is there

Gill with 58 avg is Selected that is ok…He deserves that place for his performance bt how long India will carry someone like pant with 30-33 avg. in the team just because he is a left hander when his competitor is averaging 56 & his last odi knock was series winning hundred in Southafrica..! I think you addressed valid points and you told all vice captains are not going to be a captains and that point Shreyas Iyer's captaincy record way better than gill, his 2024 captaincy record is way more than better throughout all formats and I can't tell he should be the vice-captain for Indian team because of IPL 2024, His record is SMAT 2024 winning captain, IPL 2024 Winning captain, Irani cup winning Captain, Ranji trophy winning captain....We are not against Gill but the same time he is not better than other captains also. You could also tell Iyer should be vice-captain for this champion trophy only

Ash players like Jaiswal,Abishek Sharma,Tilak varma got chance by performing 2 Seasons of IPL whereas player like Ruturaj has shown consistent performance for the past 4 seasons.Even he justified his selection in t20is in the opening too he showed some glimpse in down the order averaging near 40 in t20i.The selection criteria should be same right if selected on the basis of performance the management should give him the priority than others. Bro few questions i have for you 1) IPL performance should decide the chance of being in indian team or IPL should be considered as just one of the factor alone. 2) Also captaincy should be given based on performance of high score and high wickets or it should be based on the leadership skill and team spirit. 3) If a batsman score 3 hundred in ipl and not even scored a half century in champion trophy then selectors should give him another chance or selector should take players who are in waiting list with 1 century and 2 50's in ipl.

Ash I agree your points on player selection but on the VC role I beg to differ from your thought. You seem to miss the fact that Gill hasn't captained Ind in any of the series apart from the Zim T20I. Will that be enough sample size to opt him as VC? Imagine if Rohit gets injured during a match, who will be leading the team - the player who haven't captined in the bilateral series will be captaining in the ICC event. You can choose him as Cap/VC after champions trophy. But for this particular event should have gone with the experienced players like Hardik, Bumrah, Shreyas.

Arguments for jaiswal > gill as opener. 1. Better strike rate overall but especially in power play 2. Left right combo at top of the lineup, plus jaiswal is the only lefty in the top 6. This will be very important especially against Pakistan and their left arm seamers 3. More fearless approach and ability to take the fight to opposition champion bowlers I understand jaiswal is yet to debut in odi but there was a great chance to do that in the England series before the champions trophy and that chance is being squandered to give support to a lesser player

@@rsrik018 Jaiswal Form, intent and contributing to team priority can be seen vividly. This is main reason everyone backs Jaiswal. Gill, honestly high skilled player compare to Jaiswal, Ruthuraj and even Rohit also. But his approach, priorities are very very different. His skill never reflected to teams contribution. His approach of innings is at par to Virat. Slow starter, and once he set he takes any bowler. Virat - Yuvraj and Gill are same kind of players. They score quickly once they found half century. And Gill has lots of distractions. It always looks like he is playing for his spot like KL Rahul. Biggest weakness for Gill is focus. He looses focus easily compare to Jaiswal. Gill also traveling like KL Rahul, that bad disease is contagious. Few players always lucky, irrespective of last series performance they will get spot in team. If we compare Gill and Ruthuraj, Ruthuraj has better managing skills, once he set he scores better than Gill. But no one endorse him. I am CSK fan, but Ruthuraj performance in domestic is not good this season. So he doesn't deserve place in CT25 or bilateral series. He need to enhance his skills according to team and Selectors demand. If I am head coach, I open with Gill and Jaiswal in CT25, I will ask Captain to warm bench. Even I don't select uncertainty player like KL Rahul, I go with Karun Nair because of his latest form and consistency in domestic and county also. Too many out of form players in Squad. Only Odi series with England can give better picture how many will be back in good knick and form.

If choice is between rohit and gill, I would back rohit for both captaincy and aggression in pp. Rohit can bat another team out of a match with how he opens an innings

Ash na I understand about them thinking of a long term option in Shubman Gill as naming vice-captain, that's ok. But the real problem is, when you are competing with two other guys of same or better calibre for the same no. 2 opener position, Isn't it naming Gill as VC is like slapping on the faces of Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad? If you want long term captaincy option there are plenty of them waiting in the wings for it, you have Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, who has a solid 10 years of atleast ODI Cricket left in them. When anyone of them becomes a captain in future, it would be right for Gill to be the deputy for them provided he retains his opener's spot.

BCCI tells the players to play the local tournament to get selected in the national team. RUTU and Karun played really well in this session but never been selected. It is time for new coach. Gambir is not a good fit as a coach.

I have had this question regarding LHBs. Do they have a slight advantage over RHBs purely due to being a lefty? Our starting top 6 does not include a single LHB (Rohit, Gill, VK, Iyer, KL, Hardik). In that case why should Gill's replacement or KL's replacement be LHBs? Champions Trophy is not a long tournament to be able to try different combinations. They would come in mostly due to an injury. In that case why to prefer LHB when the original preference were RHBs?

The Test series losses that followed shouldn’t cloud judgment when selecting a Champions Trophy squad, as Test and ODI formats require different skill sets. My thoughts on the Pant-Sanju debate - 2022 - Pant Avg - 37.3(10 innings), Sanju 71 (9 innings). 2023+2024 - Pant 6.6(1 inning), Sanju - 45 (4 innigs). Are we indexing too much on the Left Hander in the middle order vs picking the best person for the job? Also, if Pant fails to perform at the CT, is it time to give Sanju an extended run(assuming we can fit him in the 11)? With this the selectors are stuck between a rock and a hard place...

Ash, All players who got selected are deserving but i feel we could have taken a squad which will provide a better options in terms of combination. 1.Why would you have a backup opener if your openers are captain and VC instead we could have had an extra pace bowler. 2.What is the need for 4 spinners and 2 of them with a similar skillset and we will play a maximum of three spinners. 3.If other players are selected based on their performance in 2023,Siraj was the no 1 bowler icc rankings .He is getting dropped because of his form.Why not the same for other players. Its not about dropping players.But is this our best 15 with the injury concerns and form of some players and what is the backup if they don't perform.
