This portion of the lyrics tears me up as a Veteran - Twenty-two years of mental tears Cries a suicidal Vietnam vet Who fought a losing war on a foreign shore To find his country didn't want him back Their bullets took his best friend in Saigon Our lawyers took his wife and kids no regrets In a time I don't remember In a war he can't forget He cried "forgive me for what I done there Cause I never meant the things I did

Poison had some massive hits in the 80’s and early 90’s, mostly rockers but also a few ballads. One thing to know about this period and genre in rock was the power ballad. Once a couple bands had huge hits with the softer stuff it became mandatory for all these ‘glam’ or ‘hair’ bands to have at least one ballad on every album; the record companies demanded it.

This song actually comes from a real experience. Brett Micheals wrote the song at 2AM in Dallas laundromat after being out on the road. Feeling lonely and homesick he decided to call his girlfriend. He could actually hear another guy he knew(who was also a musician)whispering in the background. He knew then his girlfriend was cheating on him while he was out on the road. Heartbroken, he wrote one of the most powerful and poignant songs of the 80s. It still holds up and sounds great today.

Thus was the only of Poison’s many big hits that went to number 1 on the charts … it was their big power ballad to go along with all of their glam rock hits like , Nothing but a good time , I want action , Talk dirty to me , Fallen Angel , Look what the cat dragged in , Cry Tough , Unskinny Bop , Ride the wind , Flesh and Blood , I won’t forget you , Poor boy blues , Life loves a tragedy , Stand , Good love , Something yo believe In , and so many more ! They still tour after over 30 years with all four original band members , Bret Michaels, C.C. Deville , Bobby Daal , and Rikki Rocket They are touring with Def Leppard , Motley Crue and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts this summer on the biggest stadium tour of the year! You guys must go live the ‘80’s music scene for one night and go see that big concert in a city near you this summer 😎

Most really popular Rock Bands had at least one nice "slow/romantic" song. Bon Jovi-"I`ll Be There For You"...Extreme-"More Than Words"...Styx-"Babe"...many others...and one of the least likely Rock bands to have a romantic beautiful slow song, KISS-"Beth". Yes, KISS...beautiful song. Violins, etc.

Alot of people don't realize what Poison went through to make it. At one time in about 1984 -85 they were the hardest working band in LA. You could catch them any night of the week at any of the various Los Angeles or Hollywood clubs, they paid their dues, and it didn't come easy. They were the ultimate live show and I saw them many times at the troubadour or madam Wong's. They were Destin for greatness. Hardest working band in LA.

Back in the late '80s when the song first came out, I was going through exactly what this song talks about. Poison has one ☝️ of the greatest ROCK GUITARIST OF ALL TIME! C.C. Deville when you see a regular music video he’ll be the one with white hair because the other guitarist has black hair. BUT to truly show Deville’s greatest guitar work see the videos where you see the band and to check out the visual videos- Talk dirty to me,Nothing but a good time,Unskinny Bop,Your Mama don’t dance,Fallen Angel, and the emotional video Something To Believe In about homelessness this one really actually all of the songs I suggested if you don’t you’ll really won’t get Deville’s guitar work and especially Something to believe in!

This song is interesting in the fact that it hit number 1 on the Billboard charts. The band was even shocked by that. I remember an interview with Poison’s drummer Rikki Rocket where he said “That song hit number one! I mean, we were above people like Michael Jackson and Madonna. We couldn’t believe it!” I’m paraphrasing, but that’s the gist of what he said. It’s a simple song, written in C, G, D, but it’s still an undeniably great song.
