Patsy’s songbook is phenomenal. She’s one of the most legendary female singers of all time. It’s an absolute tragedy she lost her life so young, only 30 years old. Her voice will continue to wow all these generations later. 🕊🌹👸🏻

Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn were born the same year, but Patsy was the first country female to really break through and have crossover hits. There were other women like Kitty Wells who had success but Patsy was sort of the first big breakthrough star. Patsy had kind of a lousy record deal early on and didn't really break until she signed a new deal around 1960 and she was gone by 1963. Dolly moved to Nashville in 1966 after graduating high school so Patsy, Loretta, and Kitty were the first wave of bigger female stars and Dolly, Tammy Wynette and Dottie West were the later 60s.

Since you was asking about the women of country, Loretta Lynn, who was friends with Patsy and kinda came in after Patsy was already a star, really made arguably the biggest impact as woman in country music. Patsy has many hits though before he tragic death. Back in those days a lot of songs were meant to just vent emotion--sad, kinda dark on purpose--cathartic kinda, soul--baring. Loretta was more blunt and sassy. I recommend start with "Coal Miner's Daughter". Other faves: Fist City, You're Looking At Country, You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man, Don't Come Home A'Drinking With Loving On Your Mind, The Pill

Patsy could make even a trivial song sound good, & a good song sound great. You'll get lots of requests for Crazy now that you've done Walkin' After Midnight, if you haven't already. You can't really go wrong with any of her (very deep) catalog, but some of my favorites are Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray, A Poor Man's Roses (or a Rich Man's Gold), & She's Got You. People can argue about which country queen came first or who had the most influence, but regardless...there's no one else who sounds like Patsy Cline. Never will be, either!

In obout'69 I was in 5th grade, and was hanging out at a neighbor kid's place on a weekend. While I was there, his dad set a small box full of 45rpm records next to the door, for it to be taken to the trash. He asked if I wanted any records, and said I could take any that I wished to take. I grabbed one random record out of the box, and put it with my jacket. When I got home I took it to the family stereo system to give it a listen. It was a promo record, with two different artists' songs. On one side was a song called Walk On By, by Leroy Van Dyke, and on the other was this song. I fell in love with the song and her voice on first listen, and have been a fan of hers for over five decades.
