Happy birthday, Richard, and many happy returns. I could relate to one part of the clip when you mentioned about the prawn farms around the Pandan River area in the past. In the early 70s, when I just finished secondary school and holding a temp job, I was with a government department doing farm survey and I was assigned to cover this area. I had never seen so many prawn farms in my life and they stretched for as far as my eyes could see. I think the farms were cleared in the 70s for development and part of this area is now an HDB estate.

It must be a nightmare cycling amidst the heavy trucks that ply the West Coast. The mental and physical stress got you gobbling down 2 Vietnamese Ban Mi Saigon, Polar Chicken Pie, Coconut Water and Milk. I used to bring a spade to catch worms off the Pasir Panjang mud beach. The old school charm was gone once the Port Authority took over and the West Coast highway was constructed. It just became a cold industrial JTC project.

Hello Richard, many happy returns of the day! We Cantonese here in Singapore have always referred to the Indians as “Gek Ling Yun” or Keling people without knowing why. Goodness, after all my 60 years, I finally know why, all thanks to an Englishman ! Thanks again for the great history lesson.

The local Chinese learn to address the Indians as Keling, from the Malays, as far back as the 15th century, this can be verified from Sejarah Melayu. Of course at that time, no one has come up with the term "derogatory", maybe the first Indian settlers in Malaya then was from Kalinga. Similarly, when I meet a Caucasian, I dont really care whether he is from US, Aust or Holland, I just tell my local friends, that I met an "Ang Mo kia", although his hair is not red. AS for the convict Indian laborers, making kling kling, that is just some joke made by the Pioneer Generation, in the 90s, when we started to use email to chat and joke.

i guess we use the word "Keling" nowadays is not really a derogatory form but more for ease or commonly use to refer to someone whose origin is from India. Yes, I agree in the 60s and earlier, people use that word as an insult just like in america using the N word but as time pass by to many its just a word. Recently, the N word is used as a joke even by their own race
