I took a ride along Singapore’s West Coast on my trusty Brompton, stopping off at some of the scenic spots, while also sampling a controversial food item for lunch!

If you can see this, the "Dragon Tooth" rock was actually named by Cheng Ho, the Chinese Ming's Dynasty's explorer. He used it to navigates through the straits between mainland Singapore and Sentosa Island.

I watched all your Singapore by Brompton videos (and all your other Singapore related videos) when I first got my own in July 2022. They have been a huge inspiration for me to get out there to pedal and explore the island myself. I've recently finished my own West Coast exploration myself and I'm currently rewatching all your cycling videos. By the way, there is a playground for dogs in ECP now!

When I 1st came to Singapore in 1992, West Coast Park was by the sea, as the land reclamation had not yet started, it started the following year. In 1992 there was also no McDonalds there either. Further along you have Pandan Reservoir, and I used to cycle around that for exercise after work, it is about 4-5km all the way around. And the skyway (viaduct or whatever one wants to call it) didn't appear until 1998. And in the stretch of road along Pasir Panjang Rd between Clementi Rd and Bouna Vista Rd, there used to be kampongs, all in 1992

Hi Richard, when you next visit Haw Par Villa, take a ride down Pasir Panjang Rd ... I always find that road fascinating, it's an interesting and eclectic mix of all kinds of buildings, some really old houses alongside new residences, many small, obscure churches, a roadside mosque etc. In particular I always notice Gloria Mansion (which unfortunately is going enbloc) and most of all, the Norwegian Seamen's Mission perched high on a hill (as a child there was a sort of romance to this because I would imagine sailors from far away. Also, it just seemed very elusive because it was so high up. However I think it has now just become a church for the Norwegian community here). Bus no 10 used to be my favourite bus because it travelled down this road.

Personally I prefer East Coast Park to West Coast Park because East Coast Park has a long stretch of coastline and beach. A little bit of history. West Coast Park pretty much sits on reclaimed land. If you have driven along old Pasir Panjang Rd from Clementi Rd to Haw Par Villa, you will see many condos on the right used to be land where some beach front villas used to be. One or two are still there. This explains the coastal machinegun pillbox that is in front of Science Park Rd. So West Coast Highway used to be the beach. My father used to go to this beach in the past to swim.
@AsiaHikelopedia
@AsiaHikelopedia 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I looked on Google Earth the other day and from the old satellite images you can see that West Coast Park used to be like East Coast Park. It must suck if you bought your house for the beautiful views and then they built a container port there!

Chinese Singaporeans and many chinese disaspora and some mainland chinese coastal.cities have been eating shark meat for a long time. I remember my mum telling me that the edible sharks are the smaller species that live around the shallower sea waters, measuring up to 4 feet, and we eat the varieties that are not known to be maneaters. The flesh of the shark meat is light in taste and sweet.

When I saw the video header "west coast", for a brief moment, I thought you are back in Taiwan n I was abt to ask you how u got back there (coz not open to intl yet). When you found West coast park (WCP) noisy, my first thought was Labrador park which, as I know it, is definitely much quieter than WCP. I can't help laughing when you said that WCP is for those w. dogs. The funny thing abt you is that you hv a dead serious look on yr face even when you are joking. It was also funny when you said "bloody British" lol 🤣🤣. Actually at around the telok blangah area, there's a beautiful Catholic Church up on a hill. I think it's St Theresa, I think....not sure. At the junction of Pasir panjang n Clementi road, there's a quaint little 1950-60 type of house that's different fm the surrounding houses. Heard that it could hv belonged to the late Mrs LKY. There's no one living there but it's tidy n well maintained. Finally, your fruit juice, $3 bucks is considered cheap oredi.

Much of the ethical issues around shark fins is the way they are harvested for only the fins that fetch a high price. The sharks have their fins cut off, with the rest of the shark dumped back into the ocean because they take up a lot of space and their meat won't fetch a good price. As anyone would guess, the sharks will not survive for long without their fins. I'd say, for any meat to be consumed, it should be sustainable and there should be as little wastage as possible.

I am sitting in wet and drizzling London, waiting for MAS and MoM travel approval to move to Singapore. I am so tired of this Covid circus...

@@AsiaHikelopedia Ya I was seated just next to the stall where the queue was, you are filming yourself and taking pictures of the stall menu and all. When will the video come out?
@AsiaHikelopedia

@@LonesomeBossDaily I'm probably not going to use it as the activity I filmed afterwards didn't work out so well. But thinking of going back there soon to do a purely food video.
