Here's a summary of the main points I got from this video: Racism against Asian-Americans has always existed. It just didn’t appear to as blatantly as now. All that this pandemic has done is expose the underlying racism that has always been there. In the 1900s, in a similar health crisis, only the Chinatown region of San Francisco was subject to quarantine while the surrounding white businesses were preserved. The current U.S. president is only empowering and emboldening racist people to voice their thoughts with his phrasing of COVID as the “Chinese-flu” or “Kung-flu”. It justifies the beliefs of racist people and they believe they are doing a good deed by speaking up for everyone when they voice their animosity towards Asians. Due to this pandemic, it’s as though Asian-Americans are not longer integrated/assimilated into American society. The double-standard is exposed because as per what's historically been done, it’s easier to make a minority group into a scape-goat rather than acknowledge the inherent structural problems with this country and its healthcare system. And once again, this only strengthens the “them” vs. “us” dichotomy between Asians and other minority groups. It bolsters the stereotypes of Asians as “dirty” or “disease-ridden” and emphasizes racial differences. One great way to help stop racism is continuing to have these difficult conversations about racism with the people around you.

@EsterLee IMO Trump's rhetoric is directed towards the CCP and NOT The Chinese people nor asian Americans, asian racism has had a foothold in this country since the 1800's and the building of the railroad infrastructure in USA, That was a bad situation all around, and it was still is going on till the pandemis. (Sex Workers). I don't know exactly who does it now but slave labor and indentured servants were brought to this country in the 1850's, 15,000 to 20,000 Chinese immigrants have been largely ignored by history. without them “it would have been impossible to complete the western portion of the Transcontinental Railroad, and they eventually fought with the Irish for jobs too, so theres theres that, Gordon Chang, Stanford professor of American history and author of the book, Ghosts of Gold Mountain. “White workers, whom the company wanted, did not sign on in numbers anything close to what was needed,” Chinese Americans Were Once Forbidden to Testify in Court. A Murder Changed That According to the Chinese Railroad Workers Project, Central Pacific started with a crew of 21 Chinese workers in January 1864. Chinese laborers at work on construction for the railroad built across the Sierra Nevada Mountains, circa 1870s. “In January 1865, convinced that Chinese workers were capable, the railroad hired 50 Chinese workers and then 50 more,” the Project notes. “But the demand for labor increased, and white workers were reluctant to do such backbreaking, hazardous work.” More Chinese immigrants began arriving in California, and two years later, about 90 percent of the workers were Chinese. “Hong Kong and China were as close in travel time as the eastern U.S.,” Chang says. “The Irish (who made up the majority of the Union Pacific workforce which was laying tracks westward from Omaha, Neb.) did not come out to California in large numbers until after the completion of the Transcontinental.” Their job duties included everything from unskilled labor to blacksmithing, tunneling and carpentry, according to the Project, with most work done with hand tools.

As a Japanese-American living in Texas: My sisters are being bullied in high school with racial slurs. It was the same for me when I was in high school, but videos are being shown, memes, online bullying. There’s been students that literally look at my sisters, mockingly cover their faces and fast walk away. It’s definitely worse for them than it was for me. 😞 Before COVID-19, it was, “Oh, that’s so cool that half of your family is from Japan!” “Japan is so cool!” “What’s your favorite Japanese artist?” But yes, the ignorance and racism has always been there. I like the conversations in smaller bubbles idea but with a slight modification. Instead of you telling someone who made a racist remark that what they said was offensive and/or inappropriate, ask them to clarify what they said. Then ask them why they said it. How the conversation starts is important. If you enter a conversation with the mindset that they were already wrong then that's not a conversation. That's you telling someone they were wrong and sure you did the right thing probably but if your goal is to change minds then you've failed spectacularly. A conversation happens when one talks and the other listens. Be the one who listens first so when its your time to talk you have a listener. Great content as always AB! Lead with kindness everyone :)

Here are people trying to stop racism against far eastern Asians but with comments like the one you wrote, you're only pushing people away. Stop it! As an ABC, I always felt like I was/am an outsider. Here in the states, I am too Asian to be American. In China, I am too whitewashed/American to be Chinese. I was born and raised here in the States. Yet, I still got bullied for being Asian a few times in my experience of being bullied in public school. All of which were just microaggressions including the times outside of school. Not just in the workplace, but often on the street or at a store from complete strangers who won't know anything about you. The first racist attack I experienced was when I was on a run outside; how can that person know about my degrees, my contribution to society, or what accent I speak with. Back around February or early March, before the whole CoViD 19 thing was a big issue in the U.S, I was at school and I was doing a project. There was a colored marker that I needed that was at another table. So I went over to the other table to ask for the marker. When I went over to the table to ask for the marker, some of the kids at that table began to loudly whisper "Ooo CoViD" loud enough so I could hear. (I'm korean american for reference). I am very much aware that there is way worse discrimination against Asian Americans going on and it truly breaks my heart. But as I experienced this whole marker situation, I wondered, how many small, unnoticed remarks like that are happening around the world? Honestly, I wasn't all that bothered by the remark because I was kind of used to it. But I know something like that could hurt a lot of other kids especially if it happened constantly which in many cases it does. Anyway, just wanted to share.

I've tried, but their animosity towards certain countries can only fade so much but they have a little bitterness for their country that had been invaded in the past (not mentioning which country that's not the point here). my point is that we're not a wartime generation, we should be a generation of peace. this is just my wishful thinking but i really wanna see the light at the end of the tunnel. not "waiting out" this pandemic, but changing things now.

To claim otherwise, is ignorance. I hope one day we get to see the reaction by China or Korean people when mass immigration occurs and they are no longer the 99% of their societies, but instead are 75% and have to actually deal with their racist views. Right now they hardly ever meet anyone not like them so their racism never gets a chance to show itself :)
