@@inferiorinferno8859 Nobody said war crimes were a less important issue and I definitely wouldn't disagree if someone called America terrorists. They most likely put white culture in quotes referring to a certain kind of white American and/or white European, rather than ALL white people. It's interesting you say that white countries are better for people because some of them are actively taking away rights from LGBTQ+ and women (e.g. Russia and Poland). Most countries aren't safe because governments are corrupt and spread ignorance (most things learned in for example U.S. history are biased or inaccurate and not everyone does their own research). Why would regular people be able to apologize for something they can't control or had nothing to do with? How can I a random 16 year old girl fix America, so America can apologize for the HORRENDOUS things it has done? Explain it and I'll get it done, oh wait, I CAN'T! What I can do is try my personal hardest to not be ignorant to people's existence and experience simply because they speak a different language or live on the other side of the world. I choose everyday to not be ignorant, to learn about other people and how things make them feel. Nobody has any damn empathy, clearly neither do you. How would you feel if something cherished or sacred to YOUR ancestors was made a prop in a movie and given no credit at all? Is that not disrespectful to you? Is the white savior trope not a hurtful way to make POC feel small in American movies? Have you ever not had a character to relate to? The lack of proper and respectful representation of all kinds of people effects children and their view of themselves. Idk why I hope all people have any empathy, they don't. Nobody cares when someone wants to take off their skin and just fit in or be treated humanely. Why is THAT not a problem to you? I'm half white myself, but I don't feel attacked every time someone says "white people" this or that because me and my family don't take part in hurting people based on skin tone or culture. I fully understand that people of European descent have many cultures and traditions, sadly when my mom's family came to America, they left their Austrian traditions in Austria. Most people don't see white Americans talk about their family traditions outside of Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving (first 3 that came to mind, but there are other's). If you don't want people to be ignorant about white cultures, then tell them about some groups of white people that may have been stolen from or honestly, tell people about anyone who didn't take, murder, and conquer. There ARE groups of white people today who don't have ancestors who took part in genocide or enslaved people. Most people ARE ignorant, that's the problem dude. You said fighting ignorance with ignorance was continuing the cycle, right? Then, why did you dismiss all the Asians who just felt seen, heard, and cared about when this video talked about them for a change? Someone DID care about Mongolia and it's people, but you brought up Japan and suffering that regular people can never apologize for. That's dismissive, which is also apart of the cycle you brought up (fighting ignorance with ignorance). I started this thread and I have zero issues with you putting information about white cultures here. I do have a problem with that hurtful and dismissive comment you made about people not caring about all Asian people. Just because someone who can't properly form sentences doesn't think "white culture" should desecrate and customize parts of people's cultures, doesn't mean you get to attack an entire race of people and make them feel small. You could've left that last paragraph in your mind, but you wanted to hurt somebody's feelings because you didn't like seeing people be ignorant to your race's culture. How do you think POC feel everyday?

If japanese feel offended by americans wearing kimonos, you gotta make the difference between admiring one's cultural clothes and someone making fun or just 'disguising' as japanese (type yellow face). I think there are more chinese restaurants than mexican ones lol. But still, it is a very depressing fact that racism is so normalized, especially against asians, I don't understand how they act like this, knowing that our city wouldn't exist as it is if it weren't for them. It is also surprising that they don't teach us about their culture and language at school (there is only like 2 schools, I think, private of course, the government wouldn't bother), when it's our responsability to do so. I wish I had realized these awful issues sooner, but I'm glad I did on time, my sister and I, are starting to learn their language and their culture, I really hope that the rest of the city start to realize this. Just a quick and interesting historical note about the villain's "glowing eyes" in Disney's Mulan. Written accounts by various men who met Genghis Khan consistently describe him as having "cat eyes." Historians were intrigued that this detail would be mentioned in so many different accounts, that it is thought his eye color or maybe even shape of his pupil may have had a less common genetic trait that has became extinct for a long time now. I've learned about this through a history podcast "Dan Carlin's Hardcore History," he did an entire series on Gengis and Khubla Khan. *Edit* some people have corrected me that Ghengis Khan was a Mongol, not a Hun, and that Dan Carlin's podcast is not necessarily a reliable source. Thank you! I'll leave this comment here just because the description does come from firsthand accounts and this may still have been an inspiration for the glowing eyes in Mulan!

Avatar the Last Airbender is a perfect example of Asian representation made by two white dudes. Usually theres only Asian representation if its fetishized but the creators of ATLA took YEARS creating the story for the show and even studied Asian cultures and asked actual Asian martial artists when creating the show. In relation to Star Wars.. Personally, I think it's great that they're taking inspiration from other cultures. That being said, the denial that they HAVE taken inspiration is what bothers me and just calling it "new and never seen before alien attire" is just wrong and offensive ! There's nothing wrong with admitting to your inspiration, and in fact it opens up more cultures to more people. I'm not a Star Wars fan but from what I've seen there's an obvious Asian influence on the character design and profile. It's disappointing, to say the least.

I'm guessing the producer guy and George Lucas literally had no idea where the ideas came from, but the actual concept artists must have known. I don’t know how USA is so I can’t speak for them.. but in Canada, we are urged in this country to celebrate where we all came from. No matter how long ago it was that our family put roots here... I know and acknowledge had my Great-great grandfather and his wife no t immigrated to North America from Norway and my great grandfather from Ukraine, not come here, I would not exist.. and I honour my families original roots passionately........ and a comment like yours, almost comes off as ignorant. Not sure if it’s how you intended. But if someone from a non white country comes to Canada or USA.. does their culture/heritage magically disappear? No... it doesn’t. And that’s the same for “white” people who have come from “white” countries who come to melting pot countries . If it wasn’t for non white people telling me and others over and over that I had no culture, I wouldn’t have bothered to explore my families heritages... so I got to thank all the non white folks for guiding me in the path of realizing I had amazing and beautiful cultures within me to explore and celebrate and that I don’t need to celebrate someone else’s (that does not mean I disrespect people and their cultures) to feel like I belong.. and I don’t need to worry about being excused of appropriating because I had my own roots to show off. And I will add as well.. if I saw someone who wasn’t at all connected to any of my heritages. I would never tell them they couldn’t be apart of it. And there are also white cultures that have traditional garb I would never wear because I have no connection or right to it as it is disrespectful (so I understand for other cultures why certain garb is seen as disrespectful when an “outsider” wears something for a fashion statement) example: I would never wear A kilt or a skirt that looked like one in any way or form as I do think it’s disrespectful to the people behind it as each colour etc is connected to a clan/last name... we as people of this world, have so much to learn from one another.....

Referring to the Star Wars conversation, they do this “re-naming” thing with pretty much every culture.. yes I think pulling inspiration can be a wonderful thing, but the media (mainly Caucasian) have a habit of just taking things and claiming it as their own.. like when they tried to re-name cornrows as “boxer braids” and giving recognition to white women who wear our ethnic hair styles, but the black women who wear them get called “ghetto” and “ratchet” , “Ugly” etc. I feel that us poc’s *people of color* (non- whites) don’t get enough recognition for our contributions to style, trends, and slang that are taken from our culture, then we get attacked when we bring it up. I wish it would just stop..

They also have a habit with making eastern european countries be the bad guys, or the middle eastern or asian countries are the bad guys. I'm still white but I've only ever seen my culture, Serbian, be the villians in a show. At least they haven't appropriated it like they've done with so many asian and african cultures. Or native cultures, hispanic cultures. Why does the list have to be so long? All of these cultures are beautiful and there are shows and movies that have done it right, ya just gotta do your research. If I can learn within 1-3 hours a different cultures fashion and beauty trends and traditions for a drawing how hard can it be for a whole team to do that for a movie? I can forgive it happening in the past but the internet has made everything so accessible.

I just assumed they were called boxer braids because... well, boxing. Please pardon my confusion. Anyway, when I googled "boxer braids" most of the top results were of the french braids style, but a wikipedia article for something called "box braids", which looked more distinctly African, also came up. So I began to wonder if maybe we're all confused. Have a look: Search for boxer braids: www.bing.com/images/search?q=boxer+braids&form=HDRSC3&first=1&scenario=ImageBasicHover Search for box braids: www.bing.com/images/search?q=box+braids&form=HDRSC3&first=1&scenario=ImageBasicHover Interestingly, when I tried to search "boxer braids origin", most of the results were about _box_ braids. At any rate, apparently boxer braids have always been popular in the African American community, and some people are frustrated that their popularity is being attributed to the UFC. The fact that Na'vi costumes in Cameron's Avatar look like clothing of native Americans is actually purposeful. Cameron said himself that Avatar is kind of a remake of Pocahontas but in the future. He wanted to remind us the sad history of the colonization of America. This film is a warning about what people are capable of when they want to conquer or when they meet a strange culture. It directly refers to native Americans and expresses fear that people, without remembering their history, will be constantly repeating the same mistakes.
@estlee15834 жыл бұрын
The Na'vi were actually inspired by all walks of cultures from Native American, African, and Asian nomads. They also dedicated an entire music soundtrack that we'll never hear that was an interesting new mix of all these cultures, (they actually dropped the sound track for sounding too far removed from western ideals which is ironic if you ask me). First, the movie doesn't exist. Second it is about appealing to a "wider audience" - whatever audience they mean, I guess target audience shall consist mainly of Caucasians. Furthermore there is the beautification issue imo, that protagonists need to be beautiful for the viewers, e. G. Hermione in the Harry Potter series. She is a bonnie lass in the movies but in the books she is described as average with fluffy hair and front teeth. Emma Watson did a good job in my opinion, but even as a wee lass she was prettier than book Hermione. Same issue with Whitening of characters. I think Hollywood has a very specific beauty standard, so if they are doing a movie and need a budget they have to convince the money givers with a cast, that can appeal the "wider audience" which may lead to these specific casting choices. It's the same with the appearance of more actors and roles that are black or homosexual (but the big difference is, that those are choices for more representation in those white washed movies). P. S. Avatar the movie from M shamalamadingdong doesn't exist.

He doesn't have a weapon because he doesn't need one - the force is there with him he just uses it in a different way - he sees reality through it Funnily enough, this discourse happens all movie long with Jiang Wen's character who constantly reminds him that they'd be nothing without his heavy guns.

Spoilers for Episode 3: All of the jedis except Obi Wan and Yoda (who went into hiding) were killed. Ending the Jedi era hence why Episode 6 is return of the Jedi because of Luke Skywalker.
@darksideofthemood4 жыл бұрын
@@missdahliablack646 Yes! I didn't want to share spoilers ( since i know a lot of new people are getting into sw right now ) but that is the main reason. Also, one doesn't need to be a Jedi to be force-sensitive. Something that Yen's character clearly was. I cannot talk for asian people nor will i ever try but in my point of view Rogue One really brought diversity in a respectful manner. Not only with the two asian actors but with one of the main characters being played by a Mexican man who was encouraged not to tone his accent down. And you know.. for once SW isn't making a latino character a drug dealer and asian characters a racist joke so.. that's a plus. Also!! For more asian representation in SW, i suggest Doctor Aphra's comic!

As a Mongolian, I'm really happy you're actually talking about Mongolia in general. Also, you actually pronounced everything right! :D I feel like my culture is really underrepresented in western media, mostly stereotyping us as "wild savages." It's so annoying to hear people comparing us to our ancestors or really who our people were a millennia ago. I totally agree with the points you said about asking questions about our heritage. I used to be really embarrassed about being Mongolian, especially growing up in a western culture, surrounded by American media where my fellow Asians, native Americans, pacific islanders, Inuits, etc. were stereotyped and not really represented properly. I'm really glad you chose to make a video on this, actually addressing and confronting this issue accurately. Thank you!

honestly i dont care if people take inspiration or 'culturally appropriate' AS long as they dont do it in a mocking or offensive manner and they are aware of the culture behind it and dont misrepresent it and give credit where credit is due. In asia it's not a problem for asians to borrow western-european culture.

In Ireland the fishermen had made their own jumpers and clothes out of a special wool so that they were water proof and they are now a fashion thing. We also had our own cross called the Irish Celtic cross which was taken and used as a right wing and racist symbol in America
@sprigganpanda4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Taking inspiration as fine, should be encouraged even. The issue arises when it's used to mock and insult. Shows like South Park are fine, they're meant to be ironic and showcase the stupidity of these stereotypes in a comedic way, but taking a culture and turning it into a caricature and degraded version of itsself, always displaying it as alien or only ever allowing it to be the villian, isn't okay.

Rewatching Avatar over a decade after it ended and after the death of my beloved grandpa (姥爷)made me emotional, as uncle Iroh reminds me so much of him. From his wisdom, his caring but not overbearing nature, his humour, and of course his love of good tea, it really brought back good memories. ATLA was such a respectful representation of asian culture that gave proper acknowledgment of where the influences came from.

I agree with what you said in this video. As an asian fan of Star Wars, and as much as I really love it, it is kind of disappointing to see that they really just copy pasted some aspects of asian cultures into the characters and movies. Although, I do respect that George explained the inspiration for Star Wars. In my opinion, it's great that in the sequel movies they tried to be more diverse with the casting, for example, Poe, Finn and Rose. But to be honest they did not do those characters justice lmao. But, I respect the fact the fact that they were trying to be more diverse. Thank you for the very informative video, Sherliza ! ❤️ Love from Indonesia

@Dorian Smith Finn is honestly one of the better characters in the new trilogy (in my opinion). The one problem I have with the new trilogy is how much of a rehash it is of the original. Every new character is essentially a remake of the original characters. Kylo Ren - Darth Vader Rey - Luke BB 8 - R2D2 Snoke - Palpatine Finn - Han Solo However, Finn has much more originality than Solo. He was a pilot for the 1st order who turned against the 1st order after realizing how horrible they were. Meanwhile, Han Solo was a smuggler working for Jabba the Hut.
