i’m hispanic so i’m not one to really speak on this but from videos by asian creators (ofc however obviously they’re not speaking for everyone so) that are talking about what’s fine & what’s not fine, i’ve learned it depends on how u change ur eye shape. someone could openly say they’re white but if they’re going crazy with waterlines and extending their eye dramatically it’s problematic nonetheless

Yes. It kind of alienated South and West Asians, saying that they should be proud they don’t deal with this when S & W Asians deal with colorism and racism and don’t even get regarded as Asian because they don’t look East Asian. On top of that, North East Indians look like the stereotypical East Asians, so this was harmful to them because they can very well feel disgusted at the Star Wars thing.

It felt extremely weird when she brought up south Asians. there's a palpable tendency by some members of East Asian communities to just equate Asia to East Asia. They will often times generically use the term 'Asia' when referring only to their exact part of the world and just assume everyone knows what they mean. That's a form of exalting their own cultures over other Asian cultures
@scintilla1_1
@scintilla1_1 2 жыл бұрын
that's the problem, there is no need for south and west Asians to insert themselves in any of these issues, cause they have no relation to them whatsoever. All races and groups of people face colorism and racism. In the video, she mentioned specifically east Asian for a reason like I don't understand why west and south Asians always have to play the victim card in all situations, like nobody asked, I'm being honest if there was a genuine thing to do with them, it would make sense, but otherwise it's just seeking for validation and attention.

The opposite of what you mentioned exists as well. Monolids are NOT a feature exclusive to East Asians, as well are there being Asians that don't have monolids. It's even a somewhat common feature among the natives on the other side of the world in the Americas. There are both white and black people that just naturally have monolids without being mixed. I'm not trying to downplay all the real issues shown in the video, it's just there are still a lot of assumptions like this out there that are only fanning the flames.

@@sourpuss5951 To be fair its quite rare for white people to have epicanthal folds (and even rarer for them to have monolids). And natives descended from northeast Asia so in a way it still is kind of a northeast-east-southeast asian feature. Black people also have certain ethnic groups that have epicanthal folds but again its definitely more rare however much more common than white people. I also see a lot of people confuse hooded eyes with monolids and epicanthal folds to try to prove that they have natural "asian" features and it makes me cringe ngl. So basically my point is, saying asiatic eyes are not exclusive to east asians is correct however it makes it seem like its very common feauture for people who are not native or northeast-east-southeast asian. Spreading this message just seems to cause a lot of confusion everywhere (I have seen so many people with almond shaped eyes or hooded eyelids saying they have asiatic eyes when its so painfully obvious they don't as an excuse for making themselves appear more asian or "exotic (ugh i hate that word I'm sorry). As a middle eastern myself, I agree that middle easterns don't face east asian struggles and shouldn't really talk about it, especially over east asians, However we do face our own struggles and opressions. We get fetishized and sexualised because people view us as "exotic" and "sexy" like the "sexy arab belly dancer" stereotype, and we get our culture appropriated and fetishized even sexualised too, such as belly dancing and the costumes, our traditional clothing and henna, on top of all that we get told we're not "real asians". We've been called "chi*ky" our entire lives, our food has been made fun of, our people have also been subjected to fet*shization. How the rest of the world treat asians is the way how some parts of India treats us NE people. So even if you said, India is completely different from East Asia (looks, culture, etc), it is only half true, NE India being the proof. India is a very very diverse country.

And we Indians don't try to be part of your culture or whatever you said, that's quote ignorant. Hi boo! I like your videos, that's why I kindly wanna point it out to you, that India is a massive country and shares border with China. Many of its residents share features what you call 'East Asian features', so painting a entire country with one of the most diverse population with one stroke, kinda adds to the already existing problem. They suffer from the same issues you are talking about, so just saying 'completely different people' is kinda tragic. I hope that everyone can work towards getting rid of those stereotypes because it gets creeps to seek out certain races because of what they expect them to be and not because of who the person is themselves, it's dehumanizing.

Amazing video and great points. However, I would disagree on how Russians and other types of Asians look totally different because many Russians, Central Asians and Indians have "East Asian" features and further admixture with the Huns, Turkic, Mongol and Indo-Iranian expansion within Central Asia. The historic mixing between Russia, China and the Soviet Republics of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan which many share similar features because of their long history of mixing and all Asian.

I believe that TikTok overused the term “Asianfishing”. Up to the point where it’s lost it’s true meaning. It’s hard for people to take these things seriously when we have non-Asians accusing everyone under the sun of Asian fishing just because of their eyeliner or natural eye shape. I was on Tiktok yesterday and I remember watching a south east ASIAN man be accused of Asian-fishing lmao Plus another African girl on tiktok who has slanted, up-ward eyes is accused everyday for Asian-fishing. Reminder that not only East Asians have slanted eyes.. Lastly, “Asian-fishing” is actually called Yellowface, as it dates way back to when white European/American men would purposely portray themselves as East Asians for theatre. They would paint their faces, slant their eyes, and sometimes even give each other “buckteeth”. This still happens today with White actors/actresses taking the roles meant for Asians (ex: Cloud Atlas). I also recommend watching “Yellowface is a bad look, Hollywood” on KZbin by Vox. ❗️Edit❗️: I believe Asian fishing is when someone pretends to be asian by editing their facial features and lying to everyone that they’re asian. Like..fooling the public into thinking your asian and it’s hard to not believe them. Which is why I don’t believe that dark-skin black people can “asian-fish” just because they have slanted/small eyes lol they’re either half asian or not- but they can’t fake it. Also with plenty other races/ethnicities who are randomly accused of asian-fishing just for their natural facial features😒 So yes, after reading the replies I realized the differences between Asian fishing and yellow-face! I’m glad that people replied to this and let me know!! 😊
@ThatGirlJD

Yellowface is different, it's like Blackface in the sense it's sole purpose is to make Asians look bad like Blackface is used to make Black people look bad, using all the stereotypes they find to negative. Asian Fishing is like Black fishing, it's used to "pass" as anther race or look ambiguously mixed with that race by taking all the features and stereotypes that they think are attractive. Both have a negative effect on the community they target and try to appropriate. Soon they are going to start Blasian fishing, if the haven't already.

Her mother basically forced her to act all innocent and dress in the Loli style to make her look like a 'Doll' and started getting Internet fame when she was 15 years old. Venus mum would force her to send rude messages / take venus phone and threaten other creators who had the same theme/dress style as her. In 2015 when she was 19,she had a boyfriend called Manikai. That's when all of this information unravels, when she reveals that her mum kept trying to delete the couples images from venus Insta account and making up rumours about him. Many people realised that the majority of 'Venus' tweets/post captions were eerily a similar typing style to her mothers. Venus ended up running away from her mother. And then her mother turned all the hate towards Venus. Trying to bring her reputation down etc. Basically it all spiralled out of control and now Venus has an only fans account and is apparently looking to join the adult film industry, and has started taking drugs etc. Her mother is still obsessed with hating her, and even posts her onlyfans images on Instagram with hateful comments.

the tiktok that talked about how the new beauty trend for white people is rootless exoticism was so on point. i feel like white people often want to look "more than white" to stand out and be special. i kinda get it, rare features are sometimes more attractive because they're not as common but it rubs me the wrong way when they tan too much to resemble a poc or do this uncomfortable cosplay of an east asian person. especially when growing up being white, blonde with blue eyes was the ultimate beauty standard. i was ashamed of my color and wanted to appear more lightskinned to emulate that. damn.

Most people think of East Asians when they’re told about Asians, which is weird because Asia was originally a name for today’s Turkey, South Caucasus, and Iran, given by the Ancient Greeks in contrast to Greece and Egypt. So for some East Asians to deny the legitimacy of West Asians’ Asian identities isn’t only insulting, but historically inaccurate as well, because West Asians were the first original Asians. By the way, isn’t it also the cultural appropriation that they complain about?

However, it’s insane to see that, after years of white beauty established here in the Occidental part, out of nowhere a bunch of white people are trying not to look white, but in the same way enjoying the privilege and being racist. We are also always called "chingkis" and whatnot. because most of us have white skin and slanted eyes. 3. The Manipuris(people living in Manipur; which is a part of North-East India) are believed to be of the Mongolian race. Most of our adults tell us that we are in fact from the Mongolian race(it is still debated tho). So that must be why some of the Indians commented about the star wars stuff.

Although I’m not an East Asian, I have slanted eyes from my mom (none of my mom’s family has slanted eyes but her, so we don’t know how and where she got them from) and even people in my country make fun of my eyes especially when I laugh. When I laugh, people say something like “your eyes are gone when you laugh”, “damn where are your eyes??”, and “hey wake up”. Like, ok thanks for ruining the moment 🙄 that doesn’t include the people who keep calling me “Chinese” (Indo-Chinese in this context) even though I’ve told them I’m not.
