She is talking to children born in the 21th century. For them, their grand-pa lived in the Middle Age or something. Kids don't perceive time as adults do. Their whole life experience is less than 10 years, so buildings from 1860 is at least 17 times older than them...

We see the reaction of Korean kids about the Coliseum broken part : "need to repair". Oh non kids ! The preservation of old artefact are not the same in yourcountry where old wood shrines are remade each 10, 20 or 30 years to be like new one (same in many countries of South East Asia). In Europe and many sites in the world, preservation are not in the rebuilt but only try to be no more destroy.

Why the german girl says black on flag means the dark history of Germany ? The black on German flag is for the Holy Roman Germanic Empire between 962 - 1806. I think she make confused with a more recent dark German history but that's not the same at all !

4:00 This is 100 % wrong. The colors don't have individual meanings, they are derived from the uniforms of the Lützowsche Freikorps, a faction that fought in the Napoleonic liberation war in the early 19th century (black fabric, red accents, gold buttons). I'm not even sure where she got these explanations from because I've never heard them before.

The discussion about the meaning of the colors just represents the dispute about our history in the German education system: Caroline probably went to school in a left-wing governed state where the real origin of the flag already is seen as too "nationalistic" because the unification movement in the 19th century was driven by student groups (Burschenschaften).
@xenotypos
@xenotypos Ай бұрын
Yeah I'm not even German but I was shocked about the reason she gave for the black strip. Nobody would design their flag out of guilt like that and anyway this flag was already (briefly) used in the 19th century. So it's assuredly not about the "dark history" that happened in the 20th century.

It is more of a palace (in German there is a distinction between Burg (medieval castle build as a protective bullwark) and Schloss (a renaissance -> modern pleasure building). The one in the picture is called Schloss Neuschwanstein and was built in the 19th century by the Bavarian king as a pleasure palace. If you want to see an actual (and also quite beautiful) medieval castle I would highly recommend Burg Eltz a bit more further north in the central west of Germany. In terms of castles and medieval buildings I would in general highly recommend taking a trip down the Mosel valley. Lots of castles (as everywhere in this region close to our French neighbours), picturesque little medieval towns and villages all nestled along a river valley which is filled with vineyards (plus the occasional Roman building from antiquity along the way)

@xenotypos

@@hmvollbanane1259 I agree that Neushwanstein is more of a romantic fantasy than a castle, but let's keep in mind that to a least extent almost all castles have been modified post-middle ages, Burg Eltz included. It's a very historic castle no doubt, but with parts from different (more recent) eras. Paradoxally, I think it's almost impossible to find and undamaged, non-modified, and authentic medieval castle in Europe. Maybe Guédelon castle in France, a small castle ironically made in the 2000s (exclusively with historical tools and reconstructed methods, it's more of an archeology experiment).

I feel l wouldn’t know how to describe the US in under a minute because we don’t have a culture it’s more like a bunch of immigrants coming together and bringing their own culture here, we’re called a “melting pot” for that reason. I do wish we had our own culture like the way France was able to describe classic foods or activities known in the country. But it’s really hard to do that as a white person who was born here without sounding offensive. I feel insulted though that the representative for US was like so, this is the land of McDonald’s! Like cmon.

I was shaking my head as well but then realized that I never thought about the meaning of the colors…Black was said to symbolize the dignity and determination of the German people. Red was said to symbolize bravery, strength and valor. The color of gold historically represented wealth, power, and prestige.

Yeah bloody right. The Iconic Mona Lisa painting, even by it’s name. You can tell it’s from Italy. I have pretty good idea how it ended up in Louvre Museum, a Unknow French collector bought it from an italian. Then the French Autority, you know.....That’s my assumption.

Leonardo da Vinci moved to France when he was old and donated (or sold) the painting to the king of France, because he was his patron. In France (and in the world) there are many works of art stolen from us Italians but La Gioconda (or Monna Lisa) is not among them. This of course does not take anything away from the fact that the portrait was painted by an Italian painter of Tuscan origin and that the model was an Italian noblewoman. However, for me it is bizarre to boast of having a painting by a famous foreign painter in a museum, don't they have famous paintings by French painters in France? Even without La Gioconda, we have hundreds of very famous and beautiful works of art by extraordinary artists.

@@scully8950 The painting was acquired roughly circa the time King Francis won a famous battle in Marignan (1515, easy date to memorize), and he's the monarch who made the french language and printing standard. So it's considered by the French like the true beginning of their nation ⚜

Actually the Italian husband of Mona Lisa refused to pay for it, as did a few Italian noble men. They all thought she is not pretty or special. Then King Francis of France ( the name came quite easy) bought it shortly before Leonardo died.
@MaxMax-wx6zq
@MaxMax-wx6zq Ай бұрын
In the winter of 1516, at the age of 63, Leonardo da Vinci crossed the Alps. Having fallen from grace in the eyes of the Medici, the Italian master came to place himself under the protection of the King of France, François 1st. They had met the previous year in Bologna. In his luggage, he took some of his paintings, which he could not part with: The Mona Lisa (painted between 1503 and 1506), but also The Virgin, the Child Jesus and Saint Anne, The Virgin with the Rocks, The Saint John the Baptist, his notebooks, and drawings... Works of art that he offered to his new patron. In exchange, the king paid him a pension. It was a disguised purchase, because of course the king did not buy. It was a gift to the king and the king paid (700 gold ecus a year). These treasures never left France: they became part of the royal collections of Francis I. These collections were nationalised during the Revolution.
