As an East Asian, I’m not surprised of why this mom does not force his 30-year-old son to study or practice. But I’m surprised of why she does not force him to date a girl and get married.

I think a lot of people see marriage and having children as the final step of going through life. If they encourage their child to start a family of their own, their job as a parent is complete. It may also be because of purity. They want their children to get married so that when they have intimacy, it’s in wedlock 😂

You have all my support 🫂 I can rely to you, even if my parents are African, no Asian I hope you'll find a way to get out of that kind of non-sense willing And stay strong, find a way to stay aligned with you value I'm 28 years old, and I'm just realizing how hardly I was trying to make them satisfied and as the same time being aligned with myself. And it's damaging So make your own decisions for yourself first (your vision, values...) And you'll see what will happen next Some hard decision may be necessary to take later... I'm not Asian but that perfectly describes my parents. They want grandkids but they won't let me go on dates. Especially my dad, he hates when I talk to guys, yet he says every year "this year you will get married and have children". Wtf. If I'm gone from the house for over an hour and it's not work related they keep texting about where am I, even if it's just to get groceries. Honestly, I'm just enjoying my own life focusing on work and hobbies. I like having money (after paying bills with my sister on utilities and groceries so it's not like my parents pay for anything). And I like having time to myself to do what I want, which is usually going to different comic books and hobby stores.

Well, my mom did not push me when I was a teen, did not push me when I was in my early 20s. Also as I grew older her "it's your life you do you" attitude turned into not caring at all. Now as I approach 30, I am barely in contact with her cause she only ever talkes about herself. Thats still better than extremely controlling mother in my opinion. She wants you to be happy ( in the future) so she hopes you have a high income job so you can enjoy your life and not worry about money. She protected yon from bad guys and distraction of study “when you were not mature enough” by sending you to girls high school. Now you are mature enough, she worries if you don’t get married, without husband or kid, who will take care of you when you are older.

@@karenchen2942 I know. Been there…. My mom was like your mom. My mom’s nagging used to drive me crazy…. (I was rebelling type and drove my mom crazy too.) Many Asian moms are like that, especially older generation. Kids’ achievements are their achievements too. They are so practical and think they’re always right, unknowingly put a lot of pressure on kids. They just need to say those words to release their worries. I have to say, they have the right of speech, but to choose listen or not, it’s your decision. You only indeed grow up when you can make a decision yourself and be responsible for yourself.

Don’t let your parents force you into a career you don’t like. You are going to regret it because you will have a hard time keeping yourself motivated and will just end up switching careers anyways when you are older. Think long and hard about this decision! Brett: “have the days of being ruthlessly compared finally ended?” ‘mom’: “ling ling has already bought 40 properties!” Brett: “..of course” - but like in seriousness about my own experiences with my mom (she’s not asian and doesn’t act like the ‘mom’ in the video) i see her tirelessly trying to help her own mom with things and does everything she can for my family, i wish there was more i could do to help besides just doing chores and keeping up my own work. this morning, even, she got yelled at by my sister. I heard but knew if i got involved it would make it worse, so i made her breakfast after my dad brought my sister to her appt instead. I love her and wish her life wasn’t this stressful ❤

I remembered the Tiger Mom videos and thought, in jest, "I bet they wanted him to become a lawyer, doctor or an engineer". I grew up and worked around several Asian parents. Doctors are the goal. An engineer or law is acceptable but not ideal. Next just deemed sort of okay is some sort of governmental job. Other choices in many families are really often not seen as okay at all. There are some exceptions in viewpoints but they are rare.

I mean, they have a business to run, which has a very uncertain future, so having a high number on your bank account doesn't mean too much. They must pay their staff, tours and care about the future, where they might not be that famous anymore. But I'm pretty sure they have no student loans anymore, it was most certainly a joke. And regarding their clothes etc, they are in a financial position to treat themselves with expensive stuff from time to time. So maybe their moms are right and it wouldn't be a bad idea to invest in property 😂 but I wouldn't necessarily call them super rich 😄

Wow I had all of those same experiences, but I played cello instead, and then I became a doctor and then I got "sick" from 70 to 80 hours a week of work and noticed many other doctors getting a heart attack at age 50 to 60. So at age 45 I quit working and got on a disability. I have my parents house to live in and no children because to need a lot of money for that.

Happy Mother's Day! Ofc mom just wants all of us to live happily XD Even though I'm just 18, I can already feel the pressure from watching this video...esp 'the lingling owns 40 properties' statement hits really hard on me...Anyway, as a twosetter, I really appreciate all the work you guys have done to share the joy and beauty of classical music to the world! Thank you so much.
