As someone who's really short (157), I don't mind the occasional jokes about my height. I've learned to live with those. What I don't like is my height being compared or equated to my worth as a person. Many times have I heard demeaning comments that make me question my self-worth because of something I can't control. It hurts.

It's one thing to have a preference for a certain height, but a whole other and much worse thing to be negative to people who are not of the height range that you decided is good. There's effectively zero control over one's height (some minor diet influence growing up but that's more to do with your parents than yourself, so again out of YOUR control), making it a really messed-up factor to rude or belittling or discriminatory to someone for. Nobody should ever be judged for factors which are truly out of their control, unfortunately we do not live in such a world. But videos like this help us collectively get closer to the ideal :)

We didn't grow that much taller until about a hundred years ago, due to improvements in living conditions not because we were chugging down milk every day. We're known for our dairy production, so I understand where that assumption comes from. Sources in the Netherlands however say that our average height hasn't increased in the last ten years but has been stable or declining since. According to national statistics men in 2020 were (self-reportedly) 182,9m tall and women (self-reportedly) 169,3m tall. I think we're so used to seeing straight couples where the man is taller than the woman, especially in media, that we've come to assume that this is supposed to be the norm in society. I mean, have you ever seen a romcom where the woman was taller than the man and the film wasn't about her height?
@keimorgan5654

The world in general is taller because of better living conditions and access to more nutritional food for everyone. Honestly in the past, the only people eating properly were the wealthier citizens . That was in all countries. It’s only been about 100 year since we have seen huge improvements in the world diet which coincides with the new age of technology/science that started and still continues to improve living standards that exists now.

I'm from holland and 188cm which is pretty normal for an original white dutch man. I'm 45 years old. Our White Dutch youth is growing even taller nowadays. The reason the national height is declining is because of enormous mass immigration from middle eastern countries and african states. Their birthrate is a lot higher too. In 20 to 30 years we will be considered short.

@@qad951 It kind of does have a lot to do with dna. Northern China has always been taller then the south due to being located in a cold region. Same applies to North Korea before the kim family regime starved the unprivileged population. Korean height maps showed that north Koreans were significantly taller in measurement of cms. North Koreans on average honestly would be the height of those in Shandong had they not been restricted of nutrients. The gene for the tall height is there but the nutrition isn’t. The Japanese on the other hand never had said genes and had always been short despite not going through nowhere near as many famines and times of poverty as the Chinese and Koreans. They’ve been economically advanced eating well for so long but nutrition is only going to get you but so far.

As much as physical attributes of a person is important, in the long term if you want a relationship to last it should be based on trust and feeling comfortable being yourself around your significant other. Focusing on physical attributes is very shallow and short-lived; although initially it is a part of why people go for one another.

Interesting conversation. I remember seeing a national observational study conducted by Waseda some years back concluding that Japanese men's average height is increasing due to consistently better nutrition. Genetics may play some role but nutrition probably accounts for a greater proportion of the variability in the population. Japanese birth rate is declining fast though due to insane Japanese working culture "karoshi". I would love to see Asian Boss do a video discussing average age of Japanese getting married and having children in this context.
@fairybreadjp
@fairybreadjp 2 жыл бұрын
I think that would be an interesting video and highly suspect this average age would be different for people in Tokyo vs suburbia or the countryside, with the average age of parenthood being lower for the latter. “Karoshi” means death by overwork so I think it’s a misnomer to say birth rates are declining due to “karoshi.” It’d probably be a bit more accurate to describe the situation as: birth rates are being affected by a multitude of societal factors or issues including (but not exclusively) the work culture.

Did you live twenty years ago?The Japanese have not grown taller for more than twenty years. In fact, the Japanese have been around 170 centimeters since the 1980s.The recent news is that the average height of the new generation of Japanese young people has not only not increased but has decreased. In contrast, the heights of Northern Chinese and Koreans began to approach the level of Europeans.Especially the people from North China. The economy in North China is worse than that of South Korea and Japan, but they are actually taller than South Koreans. According to the latest survey and research, the average height of 19-year-old northern Chinese has exceeded 176 centimeters, and can even reach 177 centimeters in Shandong Province and Manchuria.Korean data is 174.9 cm. As China industrializes, the heights of Chinese are returning to their historical levels.The reason why Japanese are shorter is because of the "island effect". Mammals living on islands are generally shorter. This is because there is very little food on the islands. People with the tall gene will be eliminated by the environment if they do not get enough food.

Saying Japanese people were always short in the past is false. Actually Samurai were quite tall and this mainly because of their diet. No one likes to talk about this, especially the Japanese Government but the standard of food and how much milk/vegetables children in Japan eat now is lower than the past. Their diet is not as great as it used to be - lots of sugar in everything and bread is becoming more and more common for breakfast (asa gohan). You can look up the soldiers, warriors, samurai of Japan and compare their heights to the Japanese now and see a huge difference. Back then they trained, ate well and really built-up their bodies - it wasn't just the armour and facial hair that made them a scary force.

Its called recessive genes. Its very unlikely to happen. My big brother is 179, I am 180 and our father is 178. We both got dominant genes from our father. If the difference between brothers is bigger than 5-6 cm it means the shorter got his height gene from your mother or someone in your family (maybe grandparents or great grandparents) who had a short height gene. The chance of that "lottery" increases if the height difference between your mother and your father is bigger than 15 cm. But you still get to be taller than your mother because of the growth hormone despite getting a short gene. Only happens with males though,if women get height from their fathers or a dominant gene from their family their growth hormone will shut down her maximum growth potential. Thats why its pretty rare to see women over 185 cm. Even around my height in europe I dont see women taller than me most of the times at 5'11. But yeah nutrition helps with the growing process. I could have been 6ft if I had eaten better and worked out (veggies, calcium and more protein) during adolescence. So yeah you took advantage of your height potential.

Actually, being shorter makes you more energy efficient. You require less calories to survive, and your lower center of gravity allows your bones and joints to last longer. In times of plentiful excess, there is room for bigger, but in times of scarcity such as post apocalyptic times such as after nuclear war, being smaller increases the chances of survival. Remember when big dinosaurs died out when resources/food became scarce, only the small animals survived. Diversity is valuable so a species can survive many different scenarios.

Whether a man is 5’7 or smaller, they have human rights. Like a woman being taller than the average height. They have human rights. Silly for that woman to be saying men don’t. Also, men who are small, did they ask to be? No. Did women ask to be tall? No. It is what it is. Shouldn’t be joked about, criticised etc. My partner is 12 years older and is smaller than me. I’m 6’ and my partner is roughly 5’9-5’10. We think nothing of it lol

In Japan there're so many short Olympic medalists like Kohei Uchimura, Ayumu Hirano, Shoma Uno, etc. They've achieved what most of human cannot do. Human rights? What is she talking about?

Im 192cm, I get more issues than benefits from being, cant say that tall cus the average in mine region is 180cm, and you can really see easily a lot of people who have 2m. When I came to China, I find it hard, not to mention how it sucks in an airplane, metro or a two story bus. I feel so sad when people are not happy for not being tall or something, mine best friend is 168cm, thats for our standards really really short, but he has a cute nickname for it and a lot of people know him in town for being short. Hes a musician, and the energy he gives, its amazing. He likes to joke that heas a pro basketball player lol. We are all humans, u can take the benefits of being tall as being ''short'' to ur advantage.

@@guehh2881 Herzegovina( Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Montenegro. I had a look on 2022, M182.47 F167.47 In Herzegovina the city of Čapljina has average of 184cm, since our country u can devide into two parts by geography and culture, one country but when its about being tall, generally Bosnians are a bit lower, and historically Herzegovina and Montenegro where one landmark so u can see the connection there as well. Generally all ExYugoslavia countries u find quite tall people, girls as well. So mine friends gf is a bit taller than him xD. I believe the main reason is that its full of hills and mountains around while being into an mediteranian climate. In the video is mentioned that Japanese are now taller than the generations before, thats also true here, probably is connected with good healthcare in present day. So me living in China, I find it a bit dizzy to get around, especially since many houses and apartments are small, buying shoues has its main issues lol.

@@Jopa955 😂Chinese people grow taller very fast, I live in Norway and honestly I think Chinese people will be taller than Europe in 30 years. I'm also sure that foreigners in China will think so when they see the height of Chinese children. You can see some people who are 2 meters tall in northern Europe, but definitely not the height of most people, that is because their parents are very tall, it is not normal for a man of 190 to marry a woman of 175 to have a child of 2 meters ? 20 years from now you will see quite a few Chinese who are 2 meters tall. You must know that 20 years ago, there were very few Chinese people who were 185cm tall. It took 150 years for Europeans to grow taller. 30 years ago, there was a problem that Chinese people did not have enough food. To be honest, I don’t know that Nordic people are much taller than Chinese high school students. Am I right?

@@张学彬-u9x I agree (for the Europeans part), mine grandpas generation grow up after WW2, there was a big hunger and food issue. Dk about Norway, well now Europe is more or leass a mixture of different people so It may also influence to get the people taller, biology prefers a wide range of genetical differences to mix into one. I studied as well in 济南 山东省, Chinese there u can feel they are more taller, especially it can be noticed by the girls. Maybe its cus of Good beer and seafood ahaha.
