asiatraveltips Unique content. Can’t see any of these laptops in person before purchasing and Dell should produce decent videos themselves but they don’t. Ideally I would like the 5530 but the fans will be on all the time which would drive me crazy. I am guessing since the 7730 is thicker it will have proper ventilation and won’t be noisy. Please abuse it during your review testing I’m guessing there is benchmarking software out there that can make the cpu/gpu work hard on demand.
@travelnewsasia6 жыл бұрын
I can tell you that the fans are surprisingly quiet and only come on when I am rendering FHD 1920x1080 video. Most of the time they are silent, even when editing RAW pictures. I am extremely impressed with that as my other Dell Precision, the much older M6600, is much noisier.

For someone who is not experienced it would be helpful to actually see you finish each process like actually unscrewing both screws and removing the back opposed to jumping to screen with it already removed. I am new to this and after I unscrewed the back seemed very difficult to remove and I am not confident enough to apply great force removing BUT if I saw you do it here and seen that great effort is needed it would be that much better. Maybe trivial in some ppls minds but you should take ALL levels of experience into consideration. Information good overall though. Thanks

Thank you for the video and showing the interior design. Unfortunately, there are no videos yet for the Precision 7730/7530 laptops, so I think it's good that you're the first :-) I have some questions for you ... Why did you only install 2400MHz RAM? According to Dell information, up to 3200MHz RAM is supported. Dell currently has only the 2666MHz Version selectable on the web page, but it will follow the 3200MHz Version at the end of August.
@travelnewsasia6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your message. I bought the 2,400MHz CL14 RAM as I already have 2x16GB sticks of that RAM and so bought two more which gives me 64GB of 2,400MHz CL14 RAM in total. I did look at 3,200MHz RAM but the 64GB I have now saves me money and when the 32GB modules come out I will look at their price and consider upgrading to 128GB at that time. My next video will be about removing the front to install the other two RAM sticks and then there will be a video review once I have had spent more time using the computer. I am very pleased with it thus far. In case anyone is wondering, the 8GB of RAM that came in the laptop is Samsung 2,666MHz model: M471A1K43CB1-CTD.
@klangcharakter7776 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your quick reply :-) Okay, if you already have 2x16GB, then of course that's logical. Which application do you need 64GB or 128GB RAM? For pure video editing are 32GB but ok. I'm looking forward to your next video. What interests me personally is how well the cooling works and how loud it is. Especially how the CPU throttling under load. Most laptops today have massive problems with the 6-core CPU and are throttling the CPU a lot. What exactly did you configure for a CPU and graphics card on the 7730?
@travelnewsasia6 жыл бұрын
You are right, 32GB for my needs is probably OK but I will still install the 64GB just to see what difference (if any it makes for my requirements) - I doubt I would go to 128GB because there is little point (for me). The other important specs of my 7730 are i9-8950HK, Nvidia Quadro P4200 and FHD screen. Until you stat rendering HD video or such like then the fans hardly ever come on, and are on a LOT less frequently than the ones in the Precision M6600. When you do stress the computer a little then a lot of heat is dispersed from the vents but so far so good. It is still early days for me in terms of getting used to this new laptop - just took me almost an entire day to set up Outlook 365 from my previous Outlook 2010 - so am still getting to know it. As I have been using a Dell Prevision for the past 7 years I am used to the noise of the fans, and the ones in the 7730 may even be slightly quieter and certainly do not sound as stressed as the ones in my Inspiron 5370. Thanks.

Thank you again for your answers :-) If you should do a detailed practice test video on the laptop, can you go into more detail on the CPU throttling? Very good would be a Cinebench R15 multi-thread performance benchmark and a view of the individual CPU clock rates and the temperature development of the CPU cores and GPU during the test.

You can have 4 NVMe SSDs in the laptop. I think they can be in RAID 0 or at least three of them can be I believe. Check with Dell whether all 4 can be in Raid 0. As for the RAM, yes there are four slots and you can have up to 12GB of RAM so max 32GB x4. It is an amazing machine.

As for your configuration I would suggest you look at the price Dell charges for the SSD you have chosen and compare what you could get for the same money elsewhere. The Samsung 970 EVOs are excellent value for money, especially when you consider that they have only just been released. The 500GB and 1TB are extremely good value for money. I fitted the 970 EVO into the 7730 without any problems. I did not add anything other than the SSD and I think the heatsink pad it came with, though can't be sure as it was a while ago. Thanks for the great video. I am about to pull the trigger on a very similar system (i9-8950HK CPU and P4200 graphics) . My current laptop is a first generation HP ZBook 17 I purchased over four years ago. I tend to purchase the highest end I can find and keep it multiple years to justify the large initial cost. The 17" 5th generation HP ZBooks seem to be having production issues, which is causing me to consider moving to a Dell. A few questions for you and your audience. 1) I am looking at a 64GB (2 x 32GB) RAM configuration. My thought is that I can upgrade to 128GB in the future when RAM prices come down. Is it a safe assumption that the 2 x 32GB modules would be installed under the keyboard so when I upgrade, I can add the two new 2 x 32GB modules on the back as per your video? 2) I am trying to determine if the $800 increased price from the P4200 (16GB) to P5200 (16GB) graphics card is worth it. Any thoughts? 3) Which option did you get on the display? The description of the high end option (+$200) is a mouthful and I have no idea what it means. Any ideas? Do any options include a touch screen? Here is the high end display description. "17.3" UltraSharp UHD IGZO 3840x2160 AG NT, No WWAN, Cam/Mic, w/Prem Panel Guar 100% color gamut" 4) I am going to take a similar approach on the hard drive as with the RAM. I plan to get the M.2 1TB NVMe PCIe Class 50 SSD and get additional drives in the future when prices fall. It looks like I can save about $300 going from class 40 to class 50. Any thoughts? 5) Any thoughts on a carrying case. I got a nice HP leather case that is still holding together after over four years. However, the Dell offerings seem weak. Any suggestions on a nice carrying case? I am up to over $5,000 on my current configuration. I hope to pull the trigger in time for Christmas! Thanks again, Mark

Sorry for the delay in replying. In answer to your questions: 1) I would ask Dell if they can put the 2X32GB of RAM under the keyboard. My RAM came in the back. 2) I wondered about this, but in the end I could not find any reasonable justification to go with the P5200. 3) I went with FHD (1920x1080) I do not believe that any of the options are touch screen, but may be wrong. 4) I went with a smaller option and installed Samsung 970EVO NvMEs. Very pleased with them. 6) I took the Dell laptop backpack option and am very happy with it. It is not fancy, but it works.

The SSD has to be M.2 - whether you go for the faster PCIe / NVMe or standard M.2 is up to you. Personally I like the Samsung 970 EVOs, though WD Blacks are also supposed to be very good. If you choose the smaller battery you may be able to slot in an old fashioned 2.5" HD but really you'd be better off with a bigger battery and extra M.2 slot. RAM can be up to 128GB DDR4-2666 SODIMM (4x32GB). Most people won't need 128GB of RAM, even 64GB is a lot and 32GB will be fine for some.

Having more RAM means there is less issues when doing multiple tasks. For example I may be rendering a 4K or FHD video while editing high res pictures from a folder with thousands of RAW shots and doing other things all at the same time. On these machines, and most newer laptops you should have at least 16GB, but 32GB would be better and 64GB is sweet. Can you replace and upgrade the CPUs and GPUs of the precision series laptops?
@travelnewsasia6 жыл бұрын
On most of the Precision series I believe you can, but I believe that it is harder to replace the GPUs on the latest models. Not as easy as putting new RAM in though! ;-)

@@travelnewsasia I believe that either the Precision M6700 or M6800 was the last Precision to include upgradeable CPU. (I remember upgrading the M6600s CPU) For my Precision 7720, it's a soldered CPU. As for graphics card, it's more or less the same process on the M6600 as on the 7720

can I play on it? :) I want it but I do play occasionally
@travelnewsasia5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can play on it, but I cannot tell you how good it is at that as I do not use it for games. Dell has just brought out a new one so you may want to take a look at that, the 7740.

Not a gaming machine at all the GPU options are more for engineering work. They work for some video edits, but again a specific gaming or video edit machine is in order. Likely the price of a good gaming system will not exceed the cost of this laptop. One of these Dell Precision 7 series can run between $2,000 and $8,000 even more ;)

Is it safe to say that the Crutial MX500 M.2 SATA ssd will work on the 7730 in a Nvme slot (be that at a slower speed) - www.crucial.com/usa/en/precision-7730/CT12656811 I don't need lightening fast speed in my application but something that is better than a 7200rpm hard disks.
@travelnewsasia6 жыл бұрын
Yes that will work, but I am not sure it is the wisest purchase. The M.2 SATA is basically as fast as a normal SSD, so yes it is faster than a 7,200 rpm HD but much slower than a M.2 NVMe PCIe HD. When you start experiencing the NVMe speeds it will be quite hard to go back to normal SSD speeds especially when transferring files from one HD to another. Plus the price of Samsung 970 NVMe HDs are coming down quite quickly that I wonder whether to help future proof your system you would be better off with just getting that.

Stay away from Dell workstation do not buy (m7720) As a 10-year Dell customer, let me point out that it was the first time I curse using Dell. I have bought 5 workstations from Dell so far. (I made $ 25,000 shopping). A chronic problem occurred in the m7720 device I bought last. The same problem has occurred in the device for 3 times and the LCD screen breaks down by itself. The device that I gave 5,000 dollars made me very victim. I finally requested a replacement from Dell. I got the answer as if he was kidding. They even advised me to have a 2nd device with me. So I have to travel with 2 laptops :) I condemn this event as a customer who bought so much product for a company like Dell. I was also accused of mentioning a warranty capacity of Dell devices that I have never heard of, why you didn't get it. So I'm buying Dell's most expensive laptop and I'm the culprit. I am a victim of the device, although I only used the device for international travel. Dell told me to move this incident into consumer protection. I wish I had preferred another brand for half the price. It will be rude, but I am officially infamous with my money. my service tag : 25f3hm2

can i have hdd and ssd
@travelnewsasia6 жыл бұрын
Yes. If you choose the smaller battery then you can have one HD and three M.2 NVMe SSDs. Not sure why you would want that though as M.2 SSDs are so cheap these days.
