That was absolutely perfect. I am fairly techsavvy and have replaced most hardware including motherboards, Ram, Vaious hd's etc. What was driving me crazy was removing the drive from the housing. I was able to remove the actual drive/casing by removing only the left side screw but tbh I did not notice the screws in the actual casing. DOH.. That was an absolutely clear, unencumbered video. Great job

Really helpful explanation. Glad you go into the details of the different screws so we dont mix them up and give extra tips :)

Thanks for this. As a side note, we run Latitudes, XPS (17) and the Precision. The Precision is by far the more reliable - def built to a different standard. I'll take chunky and reliable over shiny any day :-)

I changed the clock battery on an Asus laptop with help from KZbin...... Cost me only €12 for the battery. If I had sent it to Asus I would have had to take out a 2nd mortgage..... All changes/repairs since then have been via movies like this... All the Dell guys will love you for this. TIP: I use a plectrum (guitar "pick") to split the case....

is there a max drive size or can I just install a 4tb drive then add drives to the other slots as needed? Also is the RAM soldered on or can it be upgraded? If it can be upgraded is there a limit on the size of each stick or can I install say 2 32gig sticks? It's my understanding that there's only 2 ram slots but I've also read some people saying there are 4

Can you show a video Removing the 2.5 inch 7200 RPM drive that connects with a interposer and swapping with a NVME in that same place. (Dell charges a lot of money for its SSD as well as its ram). So i prefer to spend less and get those parts from Amazon or similar. Thanks

okay its on my list, should get to it in the next week or so.

@@ecologicaltime Did you ever make this video? I looked through your list of videos and couldn't find it. I am particularly interested because Dell's web site shows up to four drives, some of which can be 2.5" spinning drive(s) but it's unclear if you buy all your own storage exactly how you can trade between NVME slots and 2.5" drives. Watching this video, my first thought was maybe the third and fourth NVME drive (I'm assuming that's the 4th drive next to the 3rd drive you replaced) can be removed to fit a 2.5" drive. Is my thinking correct?

Don't the Samsung 960/970 series M.2 drives already have a heat spreader on them??? Adding the second heat spreader would seemingly create a thermal sandwich, which is bad, and not double the heat sink. Perhaps it's only the 970's that have the built-in heat spreader?
@ecologicaltime4 жыл бұрын
mine did not have but you can put heatsink on top of heatsink with silicon paste. Only issue is the clearance.

QUESTION: Other than Optane drives, is their any logic we might need to consider when placing drives in different slots? I heard someone mention that some machines have a master vs. slave designation. Is that the case here? Also, will each M.2 port/drive slot be associated with a fixed drive number (0, 1, 2, 3)? or is this solely determined by the sequence you install them? Thanks for the video!
@ecologicaltime3 жыл бұрын
on some machines some drives have better transfer rates than other slots. If i recall correctly this machine has the same for all but you would need to verify that. Yes it does have fixed drive number irrespective of the letter you provide for the drive. It will list the drives according to its drive number 0-3

Does this thing only take NVME drives and there is no space to install a 2.5" drive? I don't know why Dell refuses to publish information about their computers...

Is there any reasoning behind which physical drive location should have the OS installed? If so, can this be altered in bios? For some reason I've been unable to install the OS on a new 4TB M.2 PCIe 4x4 NVMe drive in the #4 slot (next to the battery). However, it seems to install fine in the #6 slot.

c and d are arbitrary names. You change that in the computer management console.

Great videos Thank you. I am about to buy the DELL 7740 but I need your advice about the processor and graphics card. Is there a huge performance difference between the Nvidia RTX 5000 and RTX 4000 knowing the 1000 dollars price difference? And which is better or which one do you recommend I9 processor or the Xeon?. I am an architect working on programs such as 3dmax, Vray, AutoCAD, Maya, and my work demands photorealistic rendering and sometimes animations. Hope you hear from you soon. That will greatly help me decide.

thank you. i recall this dilemma when i was selecting my CPU too. www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/compare-products.html/processors?productIds=192989,192990 askgeek.io/en/cpus/vs/Intel_Xeon-E-2276M-vs-Intel_Core-i9-9980HK I preferred the i9 from the tests but there are a few security features which the i9 does not have. From what i see the i9 is better (faster) but maybe someone has personal experience on this as i have not used the Xeon so cannot comment from actual tests. The more powerful graphics card means that rendering would be faster. In terms of colour and accuracy, that i dont thing has any impact which you get. The one will get you there faster. If its static screens then i dont see a reason for the RTX5000 but if you move your images and it keeps recomputing, then yes the more expensive one will do it quicker. When you use your software, check the performance in the Task Manager window. If you see the graphics card always highly utilised, then you are doing graphics intensive work and then consider a powerful graphics card. For example, i use Vegas Pro. For the most, part i only notice major improvement when i render the video. The CPU does compensate as well which helps. I did do a video comparing the AMD cards and there was only a minor improvement between one model and higher model, although the CPU were not the same. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHPYhIVsfdF5sNk The software is also a factor in that its graphics acceleration must be supported by your graphics card and visa versa. Another example, AMD allow you to use Cross fire which lets two cards run as one. However not all video editing software can support this so in my case two cards made no difference to speed as that feature was unsupported in my video editing software. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHPYhIVsfdF5sNk
