Unfriending them on Facebook isn't admitting defeat. For me it was a necessary step to distance myself from him. Seeing his profile on "active" every time I logged on (which btw still happens if you unfollow them) just reminded that he was getting on with and living life without me. You need to do whatever you think will help you heal and move on without thought of how they'll perceive it.
