We did corsages with gardenias for our moms and grandmas. My MIL was aware that this was happening and even had said how sweet it was. She waited until the day of the wedding to come in and inform me that she hated gardenias and wanted something different. (She had already spoke to the florist and had been told by him that it was too late before she came to me while I was finishing getting ready.) I told her if she didn't like it, she didn't have to wear it and she left the room. A few minutes later the florist comes in with her corsage and a confused look on his face. He had been told that I said to take flowers out of my bouquet to make her a new corsage. That was not happening! I sent one of my bridesmaids to find my fiance and let him deal with it. That was almost 25 years ago and I still don't know what he said or did, but she was wearing it when I walked down the aisle!

I've worked hundreds and hundreds of weddings as a venue manager, and I've seen it all. Many beautiful moments, and quite a lot of awful ones. There was the lady who threw up all over the bridal table. The groom's friends who got bored at the reception and started a fire (I wish I was kidding about that one). The Mother of the Groom who ripped out all of the bride's (beautiful) decorations and replaced them with cheap nik-naks from her own home. Many, many cakes that got left in a hot car and melted (pay for delivery, people!).The celebrant who forgot to bring the marriage license, so the couple just signed a blank piece of paper and weren't legally married. And possibly the most cringey one: the groom's parents showing a slideshow of his baby pictures while they sang a song telling the bride that he was still their baby and they loved him more than she ever would. I have felt genuinely awful for some couples. Sometimes the staff can see the divorce coming on day one.

I got married on the island I grew up on (very small, population 200, above 59 degrees north) in December. The registrar had gone to the mainland to buy a new outfit the day before the wedding, and while she was there, a storm hit. The only ferry to the island was cancelled, and the island doesn’t have an airstrip. The island also doesn’t have a full time minister, and he was on some other island that day, so there was no one else on the island licensed to marry us. We thought we were doomed. But! Thank God for insane fishermen with sturdy boats. One of them went and picked up our Registrar, and brought her back, so although we ended up getting married after dark (the sun sets around 3pm that far north in December), we did manage to get married in the end. It’s our silver (25) wedding anniversary this year. We’re going to spend it on an island. We just chose one a bit closer to the equator - Antigua.

One recurring problem is that brides often see the wedding as just HER day. It’s important to remember the groom It’s equally HIS day and he deserves just as much say in things. As for their grinds and families-if your not the ones getting married then you don’t have a say. (maybe some say if your paying for things.......)

At my brother in laws wedding, at the last minute at the wedding rehearsal, they decided no children, we had all brought the kids - It was a destination wedding - so they had a lot of very angry guests, my husband almost walked out of his brother's wedding. I felt karma got them back a little because there were three wedding receptions going on at the country club but they were the only one with an open bar and every one from the other receptions started going to the free bar for drinks. Also, their photographer took so long taking pictures after the wedding that they were very late arriving, the venue was instructed not to serve til the couple arrived so someone called and ordered pizzas and someone else went and came back with a lot of McDonalds burgers. The bride's mother almost had a major melt down.

Closest thing to drama at my wedding was my MIL upset the head table would be uneven. My personal attendant and one of the groomsmen were married, and they just had a baby a few months before my wedding. I told the reception hall I wanted them to be able to sit next to each other, and to have a baby chair set up on the end so they could eat as a family. MIL was annoyed the table would not be even, and I would have more people on my side than his side. I firmly said it was ridiculous to make a young family eat at opposite ends of the table from each other just because it looks pretty, especially since the whole day was celebrating us becoming a family. Thankfully she dropped it, and the rest of the day went off without a hitch!

I was very laid back with my wedding because I have health issues so a lot of the small details I couldn’t have cared less about. My husband and I just wanted as much of our family (my side is huge) and closest friends to be there and to have a good time which we did 😄. One of our groomsmen had a suit already with very thin pinstripes so we tried it out in the light and you couldn’t tell. Done ... that’s the vibe we had. One of my cousins was a groomsman and ... he was the one that was the most difficult. I made it clear to the groomsmen that my husband was getting the bow ties and tuxes, don’t worry, we got you. For some reason, my cousin picked up his own and it was the wrong color. He swears I didn’t tell him and I was like “well, none of the other four guys had an issue.” He had to pay a fee to overnight the correct color which I made him pay for himself because it was his fault for not paying attention.
