As a Mexican I can say that I am more offended by this video than I am by the costume. Especially by the Mexican people who wore the costume and seem to have grown up in Mexico. Humor in Mexico is brutal, how the heck do you survive down there or do sensitivities just kick in when you cross the border? Honestly, so long and no one is messing with my family or being stupid , wear the darn sombrero, throw in a taco too! Stop this nonsense! This is not cultural appropriation, this is just a misconception of what "mexican culture" is. People in Mexico don't dress up like that since circa 1910, so it's not such a thing as cultural appropriation. As a mexican myself, I really don't care about them dressing up like that, but I've seen many critics about how inaccurate this is. Sorry if my English is a bit messed up.

Not to read too much into it but do you notice how the Native Americans were almost disgusted by the costumes but in this video the mexicans are like "i dont like this, i can see why it was done and i can see where you got the idea but its still wrong". Kinda makes me want to see an asian and black one bc i feel like how offended you are plays into how well you nationality has began to mesh with american society. Like mexicans definitely get more attention in the media, its not always positive but at least they are being notice and can have a face and voice in comparison to Native Americans who never really have a voice but are facing problems that need to be addressed.

Your getting mad at "white people" for dressing, taking, decorating, eating, and or acting like another culture???? Go live on an island somewhere. This is the most insane and racist argument ever. Let people be and live. You don't want people to segregate and exclude you but you don't have a problem with doing it to "white people"? That is so twisted.

Mexican-American here. I'd wear that donkey one. There's literally no deep or sacred meaning behind sombreros, ponchos, or "mexican" mustaches. One is used for shade, one is used to keep warm, and a mustache is just.. a mustache. None of has meaning, but it does serve a purpose!

I have a small suggestion for Buzzfeed, could you maybe take some videos out to the streets and ask people who are not employed by Buzzfeed for their opinion. It seems like the people in the videos are a little biased and find pretty much anything offensive (that's the case with almost every video about race on Buzzfeed). Maybe asking a random stranger can put things into better perspective. It might also help to ask people of different age groups and not just 20-30 year-olds.
@LauraNeuzeth
@LauraNeuzeth 9 жыл бұрын
***** From what I've seen in recent videos, the Buzzfeed employees all think these cultural costumes are offensive. One of the guys had a better sense of humor about the costumes, but the message that they're putting out is that this is insulting to the Mexican culture. Not all Mexicans feel that way, just look at the comments and you'll see some Mexicans that thought the costumes were funny or not insulting. It would be nice to offer a different view apart from their own employees.

***** I'm not being combative nor using caps to prove a point. Having a variety of voices be heard would be nice, it was just a simple suggestion. It's not like they've never gone to the streets of Los Angeles to ask opinions. They've done that in various of their videos about the transgender community. Also, I don't understand the "why defend something when you don't understand how it could be offensive to begin with." I am Mexican, I'm not just some random white girl commenting on a video. I grew up in Mexico and my whole family is Mexican, therefore I can voice my opinion when we're talking about my culture. As a Mexican woman, I was not offended by these costumes in the way that some of the men and women in this video were.

The issue here is how stereotypical and wrong this costumes are. If you want to dress up as something that resembles the mexican culture, you can dress up as Frida Kahlo, Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata, Miguel Hidalgo, and even a Catrina, for the Día de Muertos. You can't dress up as a culture based off tequila shooters, or weird "amigos" that ride donkeys, because those do not resemble our culture at all. Those costumes resemble the idea that white people have about Mexicans, and although it's for Halloween and it's fun to dress up and be funny and whatnot, I don't think it's appropriate to "make fun" of other cultures/races/etc. Just my opinion, though.

+jin foxie You obviously have not stepped foot inside rural mexico. I was born and raised in Mexico for the first half of my life. ***** I was born and raised in Mexico, still live in Mexico, and all my life I've lived in the same rural town for almost twenty years; and just as I've lived in the same town, I've visited and stayed at so many more similar small towns, and I can guarantee you that it's not like that in all Mexico. Your case may be an exception, but it's not the rule. Most people, regardless of their socioeconomic status, don't dress up like that anymore; even if you're living at ranchos, people stopped wearing zarapes more than a hundred years ago in our country, and there's way much more to the whole Mexican culture than just tequila and donkeys.

As a Mexican I think it’s important for non Mexicans to differentiate between a costume and our culture. Those costumes are cartoon depictions (that are honestly overplayed) that shouldn’t affect how someone views the Mexican culture. As a Mexican (born and raised in Puebla City), I can honestly tell you that few people in Mexico give a damn. Live and let live. Sombreros are just hats and ponchos are just a thing in between capes and jackets. If you go to Mexico and ask someone to bring you a "sombrero" they're as likely to give you a Mexican sombrero as they are to give you a fedora. The word literally means "hat." People dress up as cowboys all the time, is that cultural appropriation if you're not Texan?
@kyriejames4010
@kyriejames4010 5 жыл бұрын
@Pyotr Lenin what does that even mean? How do you be a fake mexican? Sometimes the only thing making them American is the fact that they were born here, which is my case, so cuz i was born here and my grandmother migrated here, it makes us different?
@wilb6657

Haha-you might not know this, but Texans actually stole the whole "cowboy" thing from Mexicans. So....Texans, and Americans are the ones doing cultural appropriation.

wilb6657 How do we know that was stolen and that it wouldn’t have developed naturally as did the Argentinian gauchos? Cowboys are a necessity of the kind of lifestyles farmers and shepherds lead. This is as true for Mexico and America as it is for Spain and Argentina. Cultures develop in a far more complex way than you’re thinking. There is a difference between theft and adoption; it’s not even about theft, it’s about what works and what doesn’t. Nowadays, Mexico is dying to become more like America, to the point that Halloween is often celebrated as strongly or more strongly than “Día de muertos.” You even hear in pop music; take Paty Cantú, for example. What makes this adoption and not appropriation? Even though they’re Argentinian, could you not say that Soda Stereo took their musical style from the US as well? I’m not sure if you know this, but quite a few traditional Mexican musical styles in Northern Mexico were derived from the traditional German musical styles brought to that area by immigrants from Europe. Was that appropriation. If the world worked as you seem to want it to, no culture would learn from any other, so say goodbye to Anime, because Japan would have never taken European drawing methods, and say goodbye to most music because Rock it never would have been further developed by non-black Americans.

Guys. Everyone is an individual. One or a few Mexican people can't speak for all of us. Some of us will be offended, others wont. Also, Chicanos may be more offended because we live in a country that detests us, so seeing people dress up as us for fun is then seen similar to mockery. Mexican born people are usually way more laid back,jovial,and friendly, and their environment is different than ours in the US. Everyone is different. +L. Greene The reason why it's offensive to Mexicans and other people of color to dress just like their stereotypes is because they don't have white privilege and they are being discriminated at. When was the last time you saw Swedish people, Greeks, Southerners (lol) being discriminated at?

+pewpewpew I don't think you understand what 'being discriminated' means. Our society is based on white supremacy where people of color have problems with getting a job because they're being judged by their stereotypes. I've never heard about an eastern European getting declined a job because of their stereo types. Do you get stopped at the airplane because your name sounds too "suspicious" or "foreign" or not white? Do you get picked on in school because of your skin color? Do you get told that you're not like other (insert minority here) because you don't "behave" or "look" like them? These costumes are offensive and if you've tried being discriminated at you wouldn't find them acceptable. edit: I find it really funny that you've deleted your, "I'm an Eastern European and I've been discriminated at"-comment after you saw my reply.

pewpewpew Your comment doesn't show up in the video, only in my mentions - calm down. I know more about this issue than you do, mrs. I-Know-Everything. I've tried remaining classy educating but you sound really ignorant. What kind of world do you live in? Give me sources with any Eastern European getting stopped at the airpost because of their name/lastnames?? You're now just fabricating stuff to justify your false arguments. I will admit that Eastern European men are seen as thieves and your women are seen as prostitutes but that's only when you people don't have any jobs. People of color who have good jobs will still get stereotyped. You'll see people of color who come from a high status and behave "white" but they're still being discriminated. No matter how hard a person of color work they will never be respected by white people. Now, I'm really tired of talking to an ignorant 12 year old on KZbin, but I have work to do. Bye. (Also, please, do a me a favor and purchase a new brain. Reading your comments made my head hurt).

I'm Mexican and this is fine! Don't get your panties in a bunch. Not all Mexicans look like that but there are some in Mexico that DO! There are people in los pueblos that ride donkeys and wear panchos. Obviously not over the top like that, but this is a COSTUME. Tequila shot girls look like that in vacation tourist destinations. Cant be mad at someone just imitating what's already in Mexico. Mad at someone? be mad at them!

Traditional Mexican Sombreros are not like that. Mariachi sombreros are not like that. Vaqueros sombreros are not like that. Indigenous sombreros are not like that. SO WHERE IS THE STEREOTYPE COMING FROM??
@therebex23
@therebex23 9 жыл бұрын
+Wambli Padilla Stereotypes are based on a specifications that apply to few that are then applied to the society as a whole. Assuming you are aware of the various different historical dress of Mexicans, there are regions that historically differentiated "sombreros" artistically in that manner. Because newly immigrated "Americans" (historically) contacted with that specific region created the stereotype and now the tourist souvenir markets cater to that stereotype.
@wamblipadilla1513
@wamblipadilla1513 9 жыл бұрын
Rebecca H I AM Mexican. I AM aware of the historical Mexican sombreros. None of which are similar to the commonly known "stereotypical" ones. You are not gonna lecture me on Mexican dress codes, modern or historical. Have you seen a traditional mariachi sombrero? What about a vaquero sombrero? Or a typical southener indigenous sombrero (Oaxaca, Chiapas region) none of those are similar to the stereotypical "Mexican" sombrero
@therebex23
@therebex23 9 жыл бұрын
Wambli Padilla I think you misread my comment, I was answering your "where does this stereotype come from" question. I wasn't at all lecturing you, I was explaining why the stereotype of the sombrero used in the costume looks the way it does. I have seen the various different styles of dress from Quintana Roo all the way to Baja California Sur...my point was that there is very diverse cultural dress that spans the whole country, but the stereotype is based on a singular region visited by tourists from English North America who took back a souvenir years and years ago. As someone who has travelled from Canada to Mexico almost every year of my life (I have family there) I have come to know that many people are ignorant of the Mexican historical culture and only know of a select few - most don't even refer to specific areas of Mexico, the just say "I went to Mexico" which...as we both know...is a huge country with a diverse culture even to this day. I hope that clears up what I was getting at.
@wamblipadilla1513

I think Mexican Americans are more offended than actual Mexicans. I can see how this can be harmful as it perpetuates the classical stereotype, but honestly I don't know anyone from my country that would actually get really offended by those things. We would definitely laugh at the gringos wearing them, though.

+Kari Vader This is not cultural appropriation. You know what is cultural appropriation? Holidays like the Day of the Dead that were once only celebrated in indigenous communities in Mexico and were made fun of by the rest of the country. Of course now it had become cool and the rest of the country is appropriating the holiday.
@TheKariVader
@TheKariVader 9 жыл бұрын
+icampos89 of course it is ! Cultural appropriation is when somebody adopts aspects of a culture that’s not their own. This applies to members of a dominant culture that take elements from a culture of people who have been systematically oppressed by that dominant group. Did you see the pics to promoted this costumes? Who is the actual people that buys this ?
@Dino13
@Dino13 9 жыл бұрын
Camila Barragán I know, I said I understood where they were coming from. But I'm not just actually "here". I go to USA a lot, more than five or six times a year, and I have had experienced racism, but I'm the tourist, I'm the one paying them money so I don't give a f what the gringos may say. It is different with the immigrants that are already struggling and then in top getting laughed at, but I think we Latinos go straight to the point and raise our voices about the actual problems and not only about some silly costumes.
