While sheltering-in-place, Adam began livestreaming, working on builds and taking questions from the Tested community! This livestream took place on May 12, 2020, in between Adam's demonstration of aging prop money. Join this channel to support Tested and get access to perks, like asking Adam a question:
/ @tested
Questions answered in this video:
* I'm curious what three movies you'd recommend for some quarantine-binging that inspired your special effects style, cosplay style, or prop collection "theme" that might offer me some inspiration too?
* What are the best insights you've learned from fields you weren't initially familiar with?
* Do you and your family play board games? If so, which do you like best?
* Do you ever lose anything in your shop? How do you go about finding it?
* How do you handle the desire to focus on a new skill or discipline without continually ignoring the other areas of making?
* How critical is your internal monologue? Do you curse a lot when things inevitably go wrong?
* Would you consider an episode on sharpening tools and why it’s important?
* Who was your most influential teacher?
* If you could have one MythBusters event/myth immortalized in a Lego set, which one would it be?
* Do you ever just chill out in your shop?
* What tool or tools do people often overspend on? What cheap version is just fine?
* Are you still getting out on your OneWheel between builds during this craziness?

I work as a stage hand, and your comment about the Truck metric for tours is one hundred percent true. As soon as we know how many, and how big the trucks are its really all we need to know what we are in for. What it is they have in the trucks makes a difference too but not as much.
@TwoGunToast

Also feel like 186 is a massive stretch for one band to have to set up for every show, maybe throughout the whole tour they used s total of that many trucks? Weve done festivals with four stages, half a mile worth of barricade, stands, plus all the equipment for FoH, lighting, etc and that wasnt even 25 trucks.

24:38 What about an episode on tool maintenance in general? I find that though it takes up a good chunk of my time, simply maintaining (and often improving, like replacing a lubricating oil with white lithium grease) is very rewarding.

I used to do this, but most of the time I would end up with two things that I need that I can't find... The better way is to turn off the lights, put a flashlight on the floor, beam parallel to the floor, and look for a shadow as you scan it around. (I work with a lot of little tiny things, and floors in labs for SOME EVIL REASON are specifically designed to hide dirt, and electron microscope samples that you've been working on for a month)

I learned this when I was in basic training 100 years ago. Our instructor used to check how clean the floors were by laying the flashlight on the floor. The flashlight would pick up the smallest of lint. I've used this method to find dropped items ever since.

Ok so no joke I had to say something when my son was born 5 years ago, my grandma always told me to tell my son "There's ALWAYS more to learn" and I've hammered it into his vocabulary and mind just as I did for me, and he made me so proud when one day he was trying to take apart his rocket toy and was having trouble, I offered to help and he told me "don't worry daddy, I'll figure it out so I can learn to do it again by myself". I swear I cried tears of pure pride and joy and this comment reminded me of that moment, because it's totally true.

Two movies stand out in my mind about the 'I don't know' thing. U571 and Annapolis. In Annapolis, a naval academy cadet said If you don't know about someone, don't Bullsh*t it. Admit you don't know, then go look for the answer. In U571 the Masterchief(played by Harvey Keitel) told his captain( played by matt mcconaughey) , "Never say you don't know. Yes. And he knows his limits... Both the "sharpening" and "board games" questions are answered correctly here --- people trust Adam for everything, so there's this pressure to become a one-stop-shop for all knowledge and wisdom. Which is foolish, but a pressure; enough celebrities lose this perspective; after ---say--- being on a reality TV show, suddenly they assume their opinion on child rearing or international politics matters more than that of the next random person.
@RealTwiner
@RealTwiner 3 жыл бұрын
@@SenselessUsername honestly, I think the fact that he has apprehension about it shows that he knows enough to know he doesn't know it all. While I personally have no interest in such a video, I think he'd be able to make a pretty great analytical video on the things he's learned and what things he's felt helped him improve and just break down the information that ended up having value. If he didn't come at it form a perspective of, this is how you do it, but these are things that he's considered in trying to become better at it.

I have also noticed they go to an impossible location. For instance, I have a bench with 4"x4" legs that are elevated by much smaller feet, so there is a small gap under the legs. One of the first places I look is under the legs because, if I were to *try* to get something to land there, I'd call it impossible. :)

As a High School History and Econ teacher, saying “I dont know, lets try to figure that out.” is the best part of teaching. When a kid (and this adult) is invested in the learning, great moments happen. Kudos to the teacher that says: "I don't know." Too many teachers still say the tongue has separate area's for separate tastes, elephants have 4 knees or spinach has the most iron in it. Frankly I feel that watching you sharpen and knowing that you are not an expert could definitely be a blessing to us. Some of the most wise advice I was ever given concerned my fighting in the SCA. "Listen to everyone. Use what works for you." Your sharpening voice can be a blessing.

Your answer on sharpening makes me happy. I'm new to sharpening myself (because who wants to pay someone to sharpen a pocket knife for them?), so knowing that even Adam Savage finds it confusing makes me feel a bit better. You're totally right about the signal-to-noise. There's even an entire subreddit about sharpening! I'm soon to get some better supplies than what I have. I'm a bit nervous, but I'm going to make it as easy on myself as I can.

As an art teacher is really good to hear that you suggest the very same things we do in our classes. Keeping it small as possible, we have to know them one by one or they end up being what they don't want to be. We work in our print shop, or painting, drawing, etc. working in our studio on the PC with some digital stuff... I love being with them. I love getting to know them. Almost like, for those few years I (want to be) will be their dad or friend or something... being with them is just blows my mind.

This was a fun video. I always thought my weird idiosyncrasies while I build were mine alone, i.e. talking to myself, getting really angry, dropping things and finding them on the other side of the room, or how about those Twilight Zone situations where you drop something then your kick it or it falls exactly where you don't it to go! LOL!

It’s kind of weird for me seeing you like this answering questions but not saying you just chill out. My granddad had a wood working shop in his garage/built on shed and this view you have here reminds me of it so much. When I was young before I can even remember until I was about 16, after he finished his project would open up one of his home brewed beer and would tell me stories from his life. So watching you work/ build thing and do talks like this is very nostalgic and relaxing for me and even though I am a gamer, if I had that workshop I would sit in it all day and be hard to drag me out of it

I run into that all the time and basically have to make up the rest as best as i can.

My dad is a jeweler (now retired) and started his business in our basement when we were kids. One day, a very expensive diamond flew out of his tweezers onto the floor and he never found it. I was too young to remember but apparently it was major drama and they spent ages looking for it with no luck. My parents divorced and my mother got the house and a majority of its contents. Years later when my mom's boyfriend moved in he was going to use the same basement room as his office space so they were going to put carpet in it and sure enough, they found that diamond wedged under the baseboard! Of course, everything in the house belonged to my mother, including that diamond. She now wears it in a nice pendant.

I always love your videos, Adam! I've learned that when I see a video of yours, and I find myself relatively uninterested in the topic, I should probably ignore that feeling and give it a watch. You share traits with great teachers: your balance of knowledge/skill, enthusiasm, and charisma is such that the viewer/listener/learner may well find themselves rapt, enthusiastically soaking up knowledge they would never have sought out of their own volition. So... thanks! Aaaanyway, the reason I'm writing is actually to share a fairly useful tip for trying to track down wee dropped items, given to me by a co-worker long ago. It depends on if you have space to fit your sweeping implement into the relevant spaces (so this might not be as useful for the Savage as it may be for the viewer), but if you sweep the floor, pushing everything into one area, that can really help. Ideally, you sweep everything towards a wall or something that can act as a backstop, to avoid inadvertent and unknown re-loss of any swept items. That one has saved my proverbial bacon a few times over the years. I hope this 2 trucks' worth of text didn't necessitate extra hiring in order to parse!

As a side job I build cat trees. This requires me to cut a LOT of carpet. I use a common Olfa knife with the breakaway blades. Except the blades get dull very quickly so I sharpen them using a two sided paddle I got from Princess Auto. Each side has a thin metal plate with diamond grit (one side more coarse than the other). I can make one of those blades last several months. Super cost effective. It just took a bit of time figuring out the best angle and method to do the sharpening.
