can you do an episode about budgies? I feel like "cheap" pets like hamsters and budgies aren't taken seriously and often neglected because they cost so little.

I think that pattern of neglecting them comes from the fact that they *are* little, too. There seems to be a strange idea that the bigger the animal, the more difficult the care is.

I LOVE your channel, and your program! You can save animals in need and give them a home, and you can fund your program through display and education of the animals, while allowing them to have a home that is private! I work at the Oregon Zoo, and I love how much they care for animals. I am glad that there are many ways for an exotic animal to be rescued, though, (like shelters, foster homes, zoos, rehabilitation centers, and other places, such as yours) because no two animals are the same, and each animal has different needs. I am so glad you provide such great care for your animals.

I'm a ZooTeen. We take care of the animals at the "Family Farm" and "Insect Zoo"; That's where we have some snakes, rabbits, tortoises, ducks, goats, and other small, more tame animals. Other than taking care of animals, we also give some Animal Talks about the other animals in the zoo, like the Cougars and the Elephants :) It's a pretty cool job!

Could you do a video about the "cheap" pets, such as hamsters, betas, and parakeets? Just explaining how important these animals' settings and food are, maybe giving some places to research so that people don't rely on the petstore's often incorrect information. I think this is pretty important, especially for the "learning" pets.

Two questions for you Jessi, which might also be good video topics :) 1. I am in the process of adopting two budgies, and I was wondering what your thoughts are on wing clipping. Are yours clipped? It seems wrong to take way their natural motion, but I don't believe these budgies are hand tamed so i'm worried about safety. 2. There are so many different brands of pet food these days, and so many "experts" telling you different things. How do I know what is nutritious and the right brand for my dog (and soon budgies!), without breaking the bank?

Thank you so much for all of the videos Jessi! I have learned so much about proper animal care and am really inspired by what you do every day. I had a question about providing mental care for my dog. During the day, she usually plays in my fenced-in backyard with a neighbor dog, but when she comes inside, all she wants to do is sleep. We have tried to buy her toys to chew on and carry around (e.g. rope chew toys, stuffed animals), but she never seems interested, and leaves them on the ground. I don't think she is simply tired, because when any of my family goes into the backyard, she immediately because energetic and excited again. Do you have any suggestions for how to keep my dog mentally stimulated during parts of the day when my family doesn't have time to go outside and play with her?
@animalwondersmontana8 жыл бұрын
I can't diagnose her behavior from a far, but I'd like to say thank you for caring about her mental wellbeing. Have you tried other kinds of toys besides those intended to be chewed on? What about a puzzle toy with food inside, or a training session, or playing hide and seek inside, or even just a good massage? Does she engage in mental or directly physical activities with you while she's inside? It sounds like she might just choose to disengage when she comes inside because she's not interested in the kind of stimulation offered inside. Though I think it should be mentioned that spending idle time between happily active times isn't necessarily bad, she could enjoy the down time inside :)

Hey Jessi! I recently adopted a new dog from my local shelter. His name is Theo and he's about 1 year old. He's super sweet and I love him very much but I've been having a few issues getting him settled into our home. Hi Jessie, I do have a question for you but first a little backstory to help give you a better understanding of this particular situation. My boyfriend has had a Senegal Parrot for about 6 years now. I moved in about 3 years ago and the first year that I had been living with him Petey (the Senegal) was fine he would sit on my hand, loved talking to me and made great company and was just all around a good bird. Prior to me moving in this is also how Petey acted and had apparently always been a pretty affectionate bird. Sadly though after that first year over time he seemed to make a decline and has seemed to become almost...insane. We are no longer able to handle him or have him outside his cage at this point because he can become so aggressive and agitated. The last attempt we made to bring him out of his cage was about a week ago and it started off great. We opened his door and let him come out on his own time. After a couple minutes we attempted to interact with him gave him some head scratch which he loved! We thought this was great especially when he then made an attempt to step up on to my boyfriends hand. After only a minute of having him on his hand Petey then started to show signs of agitation so my boyfriend went to place him back on the cage but Petey refused to leave his hand and then attempted mating with his hand. My boyfriend then had to remove him from his hand at which point Petey flipped out and started flipping out flying himself into the wall (he is okay). After that we had to just let him wander around on the floor (our birds have their own safely enclosed room) till he then climbed up my leg and onto my back. I remand still not wanting him to spook and fly back into the wall and after he seemed to settle for a moment I walked slowly to his cage and placed my back to the door of his cage. At this point there was no room for him to fly freely through the room again but my boyfriend did have to force him off of me and back into his cage fully. We really love Petey and want him to have the best life possible but we don't know what to do to give him that at this point. He has many toys in his cage and we still go in to speak with him many times through out the day. I was wondering though if you had any advice on how to better help with B.E. for him? Since it is clear he is not able to be handled or let out of his cage (for his own safety we don't want him getting injured by flinging himself into walls) at this stage in his life, I am worried that if he doesn't get proper B.E. that there will be no possibility of him improving at all. Thank you, Heaven

Also!, how could I get them to eat fruits and veggies!? Thanks again:)

I've gotten to watch a lot of your videos, and really trust your judgement and advice. I was recently in a Walmart pet-section, and noticed they have fish there. They had a lot of beta fish in those little plastic cups, and it made me want to impulsively buy one, just to give it a new home with more room to swim around and some interesting things to explore... I didn't do that, because I realized I have no idea how to properly care for a beta fish (or ANY fish for that matter) and I wanted to ask if you could do an episode(s) on caring for our fish friends. I know your work focuses mainly on rescue animals and fish, unfortunately, probably don't live long enough to be rescued, but I wanted to ask since you are wise in relationships with other species. Fish have been around on the planet far longer than we have, so there must be something for us Humans to learn from them, or at least, something to value in them :-)

I'd suggest getting them used to a medium sized crate. So when you make the move the crate can be their mini home and they can hang out in their comfort zone, crate door open or off, inside the new place. Include unwashed blankets and a few of your shirts in the crate and other places around the new place too. Happy moving!
