I like how you keep calm and somewhat cold logical when explaining the procedures and implications of running a facility such as Animal Wonders and when you told that monkeys don't make good pets. I guess that's a benefit of working with non-human animals; you get really good at successfully and precisely making your point. Keep up the great work! :)

I always get ragey-sad when people own exotic animals as pets. Like Australian or Amazonian or African Jungle animals, animals that just are NOT made to live in carpeted apartments in the middle of American cities. In Australia (where I live) most people can never win anything but dogs, cats, bunnies, guineapigs, fish and a few select reptiles. And even the reptiles make me sad! No blue tongue lizard should live in a 2m box with a plastic rock to hide under.

Certain animals I think have better lives in captivity though, due to poaching and bushmeat killing in the areas they would normally live in the wild. Live animal in captivity>dead animal in the wild.
@rdizzy110 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, I agree w you, I also think with the highly specialized diets of good foods etc, that humans can provide in captivity, the animals are probably far less stressed than they would be in the wild having to constantly search for food/possibly starve, and they are safe from predators as well.
@zoeaargh10 жыл бұрын
Fair points, everyone. I know I could've/should've elaborated in more detail. I guess there's a cognitive disconnect in my thinking... I suppose in a way, my saying no one should own exotic pets because some of them have horrid not-properly-cared-for lives is a bit like saying no one should own dogs because some people abuse them... SO I retract my previous statement, and replace it with "I wish only people who really cared for and took care of animals (exotic or otherwise) could own them".

Okay, so I have two chinchillas. I acquired the first (Lopez) from a co-worker who couldn't properly care for him, as a result he is extremely handshy and doesn't really enjoy being handled at all. I just got the second from a lady on CL who was getting ready to leave town and didn't say much about why she was getting rid of her chin. So this new chinchilla, Abby, is the larger of the subspecies and Lopez is the smaller type. I don't know if that really matters or not, but I don't know how to properly determine the sex of either chinchilla (going off of what the previous owners said, both are female). And also, they're not getting along at all. Lopez is extremely territorial and uncomfortable with Abby, and while she's very comfortable being around other chinchillas (and keeps trying to hang out with Lopez) she's not comfortable with him running on the wheel that is in the cage and the combination of the two has caused me to partition said cage so that they each have separate areas that they live in (I planned on rotating certain parts, like the wheel, so they each get an equal amount of time with them). I have a water bottle, hay holder of sorts and food dish on each level, so they're both okay for that. What else can I do to make them more comfortable with the environment and each other? Do you have any tips or tricks that would be helpful? And how do you properly sex a chinchilla? The articles I've found from searching on Google aren't terribly helpful. And last but not least- Thank you so much for starting this channel and being so incredibly awesome.
@animalwondersmontana10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for rescuing! I would suggest that you purchase a second cage and house the two separately. Chinchillas rarely accept a new companion as adults unless they are male/female and then some still won't enjoy each others company. Chinchillas can get very territorial and if stressed enough they can cause serious injury to their companion. There's a possibility they will eventually tolerate one another once they've lived next to each other long enough (in their own separate safe spaces), but be prepared that they might never cohabitate. To sex them, look at the space between the anus and the genetalia. Here's a link with pictures www.chin-chillas.com/sexing_your_chin.html.

I realize many mammals and some birds are good at recognizing specific people. Is this ever the case with reptiles? I've always felt that you shouldn't have a pet that can't "miss" you, and I've always taken it for granted that reptiles simply can't. Is this true?

Ooo! I have a question. Why did you decide to give the animals names? I know some people who do wildlife education (they have owls) and they specifically told me they don't name them because "they aren't our pets". I have heard you say that in videos as well and I was wondering if you thought about whether to name them, or if some already had names. Bonus question (because I am greedy): Will we some more of your birds soon? Please and thank you.
@animalwondersmontana10 жыл бұрын
All the animals get an acquisition number for our records. They also get a name. I view them as individuals and it's my personal opinion that they should get individual names.
@FranticCashew10 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. Thanks!

Some complain that it is anthropomorphizing the animals, but all animals that are even marginally social have identifiers, whether it's specific coat patterns, calls or scents. Humans aren't well equipped to pick up on those, so given names act as a good substitute. It doesn't harm the animals, and helps the public connect with them.

Since you had a question about ethics, I've been curious for a while if having a fox as a pet is ethical. I love foxes and I know people do keep them as pets, but I'm not sure if it's better to just love them from afar, or if it is possible for someone to ethically keep one as a pet!
@rdizzy110 жыл бұрын
I think fennec foxes would be better indoor/outdoor pets than normal foxes, since they are being bred essentially for human contact.
@SammiLeighPalmer10 жыл бұрын
Better to love from afar. They can be pets if socialised around humans from a very young age, but there's no guarantee they wont revert to their natural wild instincts. They are much harder to train than a dog, much harder to exercise (you cant just let it out in your garden or take it for a walk, you'd have to build a huge outdoor run for it to exercise in), much less likely to be affectionate and more likely to react aggressively. I've worked with foxes, and I love them to bits, but they just arent suitable for pets. Get a domesticated dog, they're the same in all the things you'd want from a pet, without so many of the negatives.

@Mockturtlesoup110 жыл бұрын
yea i think the first rule of keeping monkeys as pets should be, "if you've never had a monkey as a pet, dont get a monkey as a pet." and even then, you probably shouldnt. it seems like a lot of people that keep monkeys as pets are just trying to substitute their need to feel needed, or take care of a child/baby. it is amazing how little some of these people know about monkeys, and their needs, their social needs/facial cues/body language/behavior, etc.
