I’ve never had any issues with mink oil and my leather. It’s an odd coincidence that a great deal of the “mink oil destroys your leather!!” stuff on the internet is from companies that just so happen to sell a leather conditioner that’s 1) a secret recipe and 2) is SO much better for your leather goods.

You're right. I've used pure mink oil on all my boots and leather jackets. Great stuff. It makes my leather supple and soft and helps protect against water. I've used mink oil for years now and have never ever had any problems with any stitching or deterioration. I think the bad effects of mink oil are all a myth. Of course, it will darken nubuck leather, naked leather, and some light colored leathers though, but that's about it. For example, I won't use it on my beige colored naked buffalo hide leather jacket, so I used non darkening lexol conditioner instead. But I've used mink oil on my dyed color leathers with no darkening.

I’m 58 years old, my father is 83 years old my grandfather passed away 30 years ago, they have always used mink oil as well as I have on all of my leather products, and it has always been fantastic, it always makes the leather more supple and water resistant, it softens it up etc. however it will darken it a little bit, if you’re worried about that then don’t do it, but if you’re not I highly recommend Mink oil

I think those nay sayers had something dry rotted and it fell apart once they moistened it. It's simple leather care. You have to stay ahead of it. Once your leather stuff gets bad, it's on the downhill slope. I've been using mink oil on leather boots since I was about 7. I grew up on a dairy farm, and believe me, boots get DESTROYED. Spraying off with the hose twice a day. Constantly covered in manure. My dad made me put mink oil on about once a week, depending on time of year. I still use it, and will for a long time to come.

There is a lot of "mink oil" products being sold that are only 10 to 20 percent mink oil, if it's even really mink, and the rest is a combination of paraffin oils (mineral oil variants). Mineral oil will cause leather to weaken and will break down stitching, both nylon and cotton. I question the authenticity of the mink oil anyone claims damaged their leather.

A lot of commercial mink oil is mixed with cheap alkaline fillers, and anything alkaline eventually destroys fibers. I work in the hair and skin industry and its well known that you don’t put alkaline (high ph) products on skin or hair that has been exposed to alkaline products once, so why would u do that to your leather which is also a skin? You want something more neutral or close to a 6.5 on the Ph scale to seal and protect fibers. Anything too alkaline eventually melts fibers, and anything too acidic burns fibers. I only use Obenauf’s or Pure Polish products on my leather goods for that reason.

If mink oil works good enough, would tallow (I guess beef tallow) work as well?

Hi. I've applied a mink oil at my Redwing 8130 at night then notice the following morning that it did'nt soak in. The only portion that the mink oil soaked in was the tongue portion. I just wiped the oil i applied. Why did the oil didnt soaked in? Just want to use mink oil as condtioner and to waterproof my boots. Its allready rainy season in our place.

The boots probably already had somt sort of treatment on it, I'd try it again after a few months!

Some use a silicone based treatment. Like Snow Seal. Hate that crap. Took me hours to brush that crap off. Then applied mink oil. Still looked a little off. But after a couple more brushing and oilings they looked great. Stay away from snow seal anything !

Boot guy I've just used mink oil. It just made my boots soft and my boots now feel like a basketball. I don't know what to say. Any recommendations to make it normal. Please help.

I'd recommend saddle soap to clean and strip of all dirt and stuff. Then I would use a small coat of mink oil afterwards as saddle soap pulls all the oils out of leather.
