I’ve never had any issues with mink oil and my leather. It’s an odd coincidence that a great deal of the “mink oil destroys your leather!!” stuff on the internet is from companies that just so happen to sell a leather conditioner that’s 1) a secret recipe and 2) is SO much better for your leather goods.

You're right. I've used pure mink oil on all my boots and leather jackets. Great stuff. It makes my leather supple and soft and helps protect against water. I've used mink oil for years now and have never ever had any problems with any stitching or deterioration. I think the bad effects of mink oil are all a myth. Of course, it will darken nubuck leather, naked leather, and some light colored leathers though, but that's about it. For example, I won't use it on my beige colored naked buffalo hide leather jacket, so I used non darkening lexol conditioner instead. But I've used mink oil on my dyed color leathers with no darkening.

I’m 58 years old, my father is 83 years old my grandfather passed away 30 years ago, they have always used mink oil as well as I have on all of my leather products, and it has always been fantastic, it always makes the leather more supple and water resistant, it softens it up etc. however it will darken it a little bit, if you’re worried about that then don’t do it, but if you’re not I highly recommend Mink oil

I have been using mink oil for 40+ years...for a reason, it works. Never, ever a bad experience. Use it in the summer, let the heat of the sun "bake it" into the leather. Coat the entire boot and put in the sun when it is 100 degrees.

I think those nay sayers had something dry rotted and it fell apart once they moistened it. It's simple leather care. You have to stay ahead of it. Once your leather stuff gets bad, it's on the downhill slope. I've been using mink oil on leather boots since I was about 7. I grew up on a dairy farm, and believe me, boots get DESTROYED. Spraying off with the hose twice a day. Constantly covered in manure. My dad made me put mink oil on about once a week, depending on time of year. I still use it, and will for a long time to come.

I have a very expensive pair of Frye cognac leather boots. They are brand new and gorgeous, the only thing is they have an orange tint that I really don’t care for. I would like to make them more of a worn chocolate brown with some marbling. How would I do this, and can this be achieved by using Mink Oil ? I know Mink oil will make them darker, but if I use enough, will it darken the leather without hurting it ? These boots were a gift and I got them last year, so returning is not an option. I really want a darker brown. Help ???

There is a lot of "mink oil" products being sold that are only 10 to 20 percent mink oil, if it's even really mink, and the rest is a combination of paraffin oils (mineral oil variants). Mineral oil will cause leather to weaken and will break down stitching, both nylon and cotton. I question the authenticity of the mink oil anyone claims damaged their leather.

Seams too soften up the leather and make it like new again. After using mink oil dont wear them for a few days though, the oil will atract dirt, let them dry for a day or so at least.

So, it depends on the brand. Some are only pig fat and silicone grease, which will make it hard for the leather to be conditioned later. Then there's stuff like Mermac brand, which has real mink oil mixed with Tallow and beeswax. It's at least 100% animal fats

A lot of commercial mink oil is mixed with cheap alkaline fillers, and anything alkaline eventually destroys fibers. I work in the hair and skin industry and its well known that you don’t put alkaline (high ph) products on skin or hair that has been exposed to alkaline products once, so why would u do that to your leather which is also a skin? You want something more neutral or close to a 6.5 on the Ph scale to seal and protect fibers. Anything too alkaline eventually melts fibers, and anything too acidic burns fibers. I only use Obenauf’s or Pure Polish products on my leather goods for that reason.

Just don’t drown your leather with it The only bad experience I’ve ever had with mink oil was when I let my dad mink oil my holster for my Colt Walker and he put so much on it it was completely soaked with it and it had big globs of laying on it (he did this inside and out) After wiping it down extensively with paper towels i could barely squeeze and it would run out all over the place so it completely unusable for a few reasons 1st reason it would get oil all over my side when I wore it and the su made it worse 2nd my gun would be all wet and slimy with mink oil and I could barely hang onto that 5+pound revolver like that I sort of fixed it by stuffing paper towels down in it as tight as I could and wrapping the outside with paper towels and literally microwaving it for 15-45 seconds at a time took like 3 hours and a bunch of rolls of paper towels to kinda fix it but even then it would still get a little big of oil over my revolver and a little bit more on me so I hung it and the belt he did this too up after about 5-8 months of it setting it’s fine now My dad gave me a possibles bag that he made for himself back in the 80s or 90s but it had sat and had dried out quite a bit so he used like 2 cans of mink oil on it and sat it in a bowl and pour baby oil on it it was so bad a could push my hand on it and have my hand straight up and down the bag was stuck to my hand (he did that bag and my belt and 2 of my holsters at the same time while I wasn’t there)

David Nichols there are some differences in products I would categorize them into mild medium and heavy duty.. mink oil and any basic leather conditioner is pretty much mild then there are some boot creams that have wax and are on a medium scale and then there’s a heavy duty wax/oil mixture.. I start off my work boots with a mild leather treatment until they brake in and then use a heavy wax treatment to protect them and keep the oils in. Regular wear leather definitely stick with a mild leather conditioner or something

Gonna get a pair of whites engineers boots. How do they compare to the Chippewa engineer boot for work? Like moving around on a shop floor that's slick as shit off a shingle if trans fluid just so happend to spill.

Just bought a New pair of Danner Boots. 8" (Vicious). Mostly Leather, the tongue is not all Leather. Can I still water proof the whole boot with Mink oil, or would a spray be better. These will be for my Maintenance job and possibly hiking.

i've read that many mink oil products are made of synthetic chemicals and don't contain any mink oil at all, is that true ?.......is it suitable for nubuck leather ?
@whitemakesright2177
@whitemakesright2177 4 жыл бұрын
Some products labeled "mink oil" contain synthetic additives, like silicone. Look for a product labeled all-natural or pure mink oil, and check the description of the product (usually on the back) to see what's in it.

It wouldn't surprise me if the idea that "mink oil harms leather" was made up by people trying to sell synthetic conditioners.

I used mink oil of a new pair of work boots. I new it would make them darker but man it made them really dark. I am wondering if the boots color will lighten back up, or if that is just the color of the books now? Thanks for any info.
@Wayne-hp5co

It will lighten up over time bro it'll never be the original color it will always be a few shades darker but not like several shades darker when you just apply it hope this helps.. and it's been a month did they lighten up with wear

as long, as you accept, that oiled boots drag dust like a magnet and that mink oil darkenes the colour of your leather, everything will be o.k.

I just wiped the oil i applied. Why did the oil didnt soaked in? Just want to use mink oil as condtioner and to waterproof my boots. Its allready rainy season in our place.

Some use a silicone based treatment. Like Snow Seal. Hate that crap. Took me hours to brush that crap off. Then applied mink oil. Still looked a little off. But after a couple more brushing and oilings they looked great. Stay away from snow seal anything !

I'd recommend saddle soap to clean and strip of all dirt and stuff. Then I would use a small coat of mink oil afterwards as saddle soap pulls all the oils out of leather.
