as a DIY person an owner of a house over 40yrsw old i have enjoyed many of the videos that i have ran across. Recently ive been trying to find a video of heating installation system that is both cost efficent and DIY friendly. This home has no heating system in it as the previous owners always used electric heaters. Any suggestions or directions that can help me with this project would be great. Thank you and keep up the great videos

I replaced all of the 2-prong recepticals in my Dad's old 1948 house with GFCI receptacles. Side note: all the outlets were already grounded to the house when originally built.

I’ve always heard that you want to leave the bottom side of outdoor wood pieces unpainted so they wouldn’t hold moisture, or at least with regards to painting old 3 rail fence. Is this just different being that it’s a railing or made from different materials?

I have never been able to get a straight answer as to why 2 prong outlets even exist. My house was built in the 1960s and is full of them. It's not like we didn't understand the basic properties of electricity back then.
@ElectricGears
@ElectricGears Жыл бұрын
Less of an emphasis on safety and cost savings mostly. The first 2 prong receptacles would have been supplied with knob and tube, that's even before armored cable (BX) was available where you could use the steal jacket as a ground. If you don't have national headlines constantly listing out how many babies are electrocuted, mandating safety standards is a slow process. Plus, with our lower 110V standard, the shocks aren't as lethal (although they absolutely can be).
@SignorLuigi
@SignorLuigi Жыл бұрын
It was a shame you didn't inform viewers that all the outlet recepticles "downstream" from the GFCI/AFCI are also protected in a 2-wire set-up as long as you connect the downstream recepticles to the LOAD terminals of the GFCI/AFCI recepticle. Because of this, it is best to Install the GFCI/AFCI in the "lead" outlet of a circuit. Then all you need are regular 3-prong outlets in the rest of the outlets in a circuit for a complete, relatively inexpensive conversion of ALL the outlets in a 2-wire circuit.

But in this example they didn't mention using loads of the GFCI. Maybe that's why they didn't mention any "downstream" receptacles? Because there aren't any?

Are they still protected without the ground wire?
@davidbrooks4294
@davidbrooks4294 Жыл бұрын
If your house is still wired with two wire ,then a three wire doesn't make sense. Unless you use that GFCI/AFCI work around.
@SignorLuigi
@SignorLuigi Жыл бұрын
@@Lando1020 I was referring to a "general real life case situation" where there would normally be multiple outlets on a single circuit. It would be nice for viewers to know that they only need to buy one relatively expensive GFCI/AFCI recepticle per ENTIRE circuit so long as you install the GFCI/AFCI receptacle in the "lead" position.

Here in Europe we just connect the neutral wire to both the neutral and the grounding prong of the receptacle when we have a 2-wire installation. This way you still have the path of least resistance and overcurrent protection. The downsides is that you don't have the GFCI protection which is build into the panel when you have a 3-wire installation.

Pro press is a silly option. NEVER rely on rubber or neoprene for behind the wall connection. Chlorine in city water will ALWAYS breakdown non metallic materials over time. But Pro Press or Shark bite is OK for emergency repairs not concealed behind walls.

Mario sanded before priming but not after. That was brand new wood, and after he was done painting it, it looked like it was 50 years old. All lumpy and thick didn’t even sand that oil-based primer down.

I've been watching a lot of This Old House recently and that's consistent going back 10+ years. I think for the most part these guys on the show all do great work, give good advice, and are all licensed professionals. But that is definitely not stopping over confident DIYers that want to chime in with their unsolicited advice at any opportunity they can. I've quickly learned that in the home improvement world there is no shortage of overly confident opinions lol.

Put a 2 x _ treated doubler behind the bottom riser to give the post screws some real structure to screw into. Watch the unprepared post bottoms againt the ground start rotting. Actually explain how current and GFCI actually works. Stop the overproduced cinematography aimed at suburban housewives, such as that segment with Richard. Figure it out ATOH, stick with what made you successful in the first place, content over presentation.

I have always been a devoted fan of the show and hold a great deal of respect for Mario. However, after watching the recent episode featuring a painting project, I wanted to share my insights in the hope of contributing to the show's excellence. While Mario is undoubtedly talented, the use of Behr paint raised some questions. Considering the array of exceptional paint brands available, a collaboration with a true painting expert could potentially elevate the quality of the project. Moreover, the choice of opening both paint cans for priming left me curious, as this technique is not standard practice. Additionally, I observed the use of oil-based primer before painting. It's essential to let oil-based primer cure fully before applying paint to ensure a durable finish. I believe this detail, if addressed, would improve the overall outcome. One aspect that struck me as inconsistent was the sanding process. Mario sanded before priming, but the lack of sanding after priming seemed somewhat amateurish. A more comprehensive sanding process would undoubtedly contribute to a smoother and more professional finish. I offer these observations with the utmost respect and admiration for the show's content. I believe that embracing these suggestions could lead to even more exceptional results and further enhance the viewers' experience. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to witnessing the continued success of the show.

It's not just poor leadership. SLRP has already been suspended. I wonder why? 🤔 What incentive is there for people to commission into the military if their loans will be paid off (by the government) without them having to sacrifice anything, i.e., some time, giving back to the nation. Additionally, you beat the crap out of your body for 20+ years, and you don't have a true retirement (BRS). The worst thing the Army did was get rid of the high three. Oh, it costs a lot of money, you say? How about Congress retracts their authority to declare war from the Executive branch and do what they are supposed to do. Maybe if we don't invade sovereign countries and destabilize entire global regions for ten to twenty years at a time, we may be able to have a full retirement for our servicemen and women. Twenty years of constant war has broken the Army. Is it still lethal? Hell yes. Is the leadership an issue? Yes, no doubt. Is the NCO Corps broken? Without a doubt. No, there is no mystery as to why they want out.
