Where to find it?
Installing a Dishwasher in an Old Kitchen
Richard installed a 55 dBA in Stainless Steel Front Control Built-In Dishwasher with Steam Clean [bit.ly/3odr67y] by GE Appliances [www.geapplianc...]. To connect the dishwasher, Richard used a standard dishwasher hose, a Y tailpiece for the drain, and a push connect shutoff valve, all of which can be found at home centers and plumbing supply houses.
To adjust the cabinets to make room for the dishwasher, Nathan used a variety of tools, including a circular saw and a reciprocating saw, that can be found at most home centers.
To bridge the gap between the formica countertops and the sink, Richard actually re-used an old piece of butcher block [amzn.to/2Rf9YCl] that he salvaged from the Newton Generation NEXT House [www.thisoldhou...], but butcher block can also be found at most centers.
All About Mulch
Jenn had a variety of different mulch [thd.co/3w1mXpY] types on the table that can all be found at most home centers and nurseries, though you’re more likely to find organic mulch at nurseries and garden centers.
Build It | French Rolling Pin
Tom used a REVO 12|16 110V lathe [amzn.to/3hopTsH], which is manufactured by Laguna Tools [lagunatools.com/]. The tools Tom used to actually turn the rolling pin can be found at any specialty woodworking store.
To create the custom piece of wood for turning, Tom used leftover pieces of mahogany and maple that he had from other projects, but that lumber can be found at most home centers and woodworking stores. To cut the in-lays and secure it all together, Tom used a Kapex KS120 sliding compound miter saw [bit.ly/2SEU2tm] by Festool [www.festoolusa.com] and some wood glue [amzn.to/3w1ZW69] from Gorilla Glue [www.gorillatough.com].
To finish the rolling pin, Tom and Kevin applied Odie’s Oil [www.odiesoil.com/].

I had same kitchen. Complete gut down to joists, found two needed sisters, and then new floor and cabinets etc. Sometimes you gotta tweak it as this home owner did, but best to gut and redo for more space, area and better upgrade. Oh, and tis now $30K average to do a kitchen... thanks inflation and appliance shortages!

I think when the picture was taken, the house still had a boiler, which got replaced so when we see them put the dishwasher in, it had a heat register as what YOU see now, may be from different times, meaning, the photo may have been taken 2-3 years back say from when they installed the dishwasher, so that was already done. As said, the owners had the house rewired I believe, and had an outlet installed for a dishwasher, knowing it would be done eventually.

Although all of my experience is with metal lathes, I was somewhat surprised that something cut all the way through and then glued would stand up to the pressure put on it on the lathe. Very nice detail and technique.

Kudos to the hands-on homeowner with that dishwasher install, great job! That's a nice retrofit to get through a good number of years. Longer term, however, one wouldn't want seams between the butcher block and counter. Also, glued-up wood butcher block over a dishwasher wouldn't be my first choice, unless the discharge for the moist, hot air is at the bottom in the toe plate.

@@brianfong5711 Unless support for the counter is put in, I'd agree with Phonedave. They didn't do it here, at least I didn't see them do that. Butcher block is not just for whacking up chicken and such, as there ARE other counters in that space to use for that purpose, and many just like the look of butcher block. You can cut, just can't necessarily whack up a hunk of meat at that location with a huge cleaver, but simply cutting up of a chicken may be doable however as you go by the tendons at the joints to cut up a chicken.
@phonedave
@phonedave Жыл бұрын
@Brian The vast majority of butcher block countertops are not meant for any serious butchering. At the very least, the overhanging upper cabinets make it difficult. Plus they may not have the necessary support. They are fine as substitutes for a cutting board. Vegetables, jointing meat etc. However that can cause them to get cut up, and then they need to be repaired. In this case it was a stylistic choice. They were not going to match the existing laminate, and the existing counter already had a section of butcher block in it. They added in a piece to match. Just because the butcher block is there does not mean you need to get out a cleaver and chop bones on it.

Isn't it great how they conveniently just cut that giant hot water heater out of the wall and didn't even mention it and then hope that nobody noticed it in the very first cut of the kitchen image? These projects are not DIY but they make them seem that way because they do a whole bunch of pre-work ahead of time to make the actual stuff on film look very easy. This show is very entertaining but it is nothing more than entertainment, nothing they've ever done is realistic for a homeowner to do because they never show the entire process. I've been in residential construction for 35 years and nothing that they have ever shown really tells the full tale of what is going on.
