I got a bartholin gland cyst on a Friday and my gyno's office was closed. They scheduled an aptm for Monday. So I decided to put some Tea Tree oil on it and used a panty liner saturated with it as well. By the time I made it to my aptm, everything oozed out and drained on its own. My doc asked me what I did because it drained out naturally. I told him I used Tea Tree oil.

Thank you. When I was working I was a registered nurse in the operating theatre, my first 5 years as a scrub nurse. In one placement in theatre I was a gynae scrub nurse and saw the removal of the Bartholin's gland. the other 20 years I became an anaesthetic nurse. Now at the age of 66 I have a Bartholin's cyst it burst and it was blood that drained from the cyst. I saw my Dr who confirmed that I was right about the cyst and it is harmless. Now 4 weeks later it's swollen again, I tried to get it to drain but it hasn't. I had planned on seeing my GP but I've noticed the cyst seems to be draining slowly. So I shall wait to see what happens with it. As for my sex life my husband an I haven't indulged in 20 years! We are both ok with this.

There's never enough information regarding non infected cysts. - Does the opening get permanently blocked? Can a flap of skin actually grow over the opening, say, due to rough sex/friction? What about changes in skin due to conditions such as lichen planus? - What treatments are available for cysts that haven't abscessed? Everyone keeps saying "it doesn't require treatment because it's not infected" but if it bothers a woman when sitting and causes pain during sex, are we worth so little that those are not enough of a reason to get treatment and relief? What is there available? - A lot of scientific paper says a cyst will last for a few days to 02 weeks only and resolve on its own, but so many women report a cyst that will last for months and even years. Should something else be suspected if it lasts for more than a certain period of time? - They say yeast infections cannot cause a bartholin cyst. But couldn't the change in thickness of the mucus cause the ducts to get blocked?

Thank you for this. I’ve had 3 in the last 4 years. My most recent was earlier this month. My 2nd time my gland was drained with the opening and I was fine. Fast forward to two weeks ago. The pain came out of nowhere but in two spots; near my rectum and in the normal gland spot. I couldn’t even stand. I called my OB which has dealt with this the last 2 times. They didn’t lance and just said for me to take the antibiotics. I left in horrible pain. 7 days later, I was in the ER. I had a golfball sized abscess. They lanced it but I was still in pain. They performed a ct scan and there was a tennis ball sized abscess further down near my rectum. They had to lance that as well. I was in so much pain they used a total of 8 bottles of lidocaine and major pain IV meds. I am now getting a second opinion on the gland. I cannot go through that pain again.

I looked it up before going to the gynecologist for the first time in my entire existence (18yrs) so he had a look but he asked me a few questions before examining me, he told me what it was (I already knew) but the causes and reasons rather for the formation of these cysts was what i didn't know. He just told me I had an STI 💔 honestly I didn't know what to say to my mother because I couldn't understand how I was now to be admitted immediate and operated on the next day for the abscess removal caused by and STI. Anywho, I had my operation on the 4th of January 2024, and honestly it relieved so much pain and yes I was given antibiotics and i was also advised to take 2-3 sit in baths in a day and honestly it helped me a lot but i started developing a rash soon after, I reckoned it was because of the salt but it's all gone now. Thank you for explaining the many different causes of the Bartholin cysts and the possible solutions to this very painful problem. ❤

This is an informative video Dr Sylvia. Thank you. I'm on over 2 years dealing with reoccurring issues with one Bartholin gland. It comes and goes. Body had created an external orifice close to the V to drain it, then it closed and I thought it was gone, I wasn't feeling anything then suddenly I noticed pain in the gland area but also in the anus area and upon investigating and pressing gently on the gland area the drainage came out of the anus. I have been researching about this but apparently a fistula connected to barhtolin - anus is rare. This is very challenging. Do you have any cases of BG draining through anus? I'm really curious about this. Thank you.

I had one before. They are pretty painful and I just had one drain not too long ago
@AskAwayHealth29 күн бұрын
Hi @margaritasalazarjohnson3196, Bartholin’s abscesses are indeed very painful and can sometimes come back after being drained. The drainage helps relieve the immediate discomfort, but in some cases, a procedure like marsupialization or the use of a Word catheter may be needed to prevent future abscesses. It’s good to monitor the area for any signs of infection or recurrence. If you notice swelling, pain, or other symptoms returning, let your doctor know. They can guide you on further steps to manage it effectively and prevent future issues.

@AskAwayHealth2 ай бұрын
Hello. It’s good that some drainage has occurred, but if the lump is still hard, it might not have fully cleared. Bartholin’s abscesses sometimes need medical intervention, such as a minor procedure to ensure proper drainage and reduce the risk of further infection. I’d recommend seeing your doctor to have it checked and treated appropriately.

I’m currently experiencing my first painful, large Bartholin cyst for the past 4 days, the last 2 it has grown in size and became inflamed. This morning I sat for 40 minutes in a hot bath which I’m assuming caused it to come to a head. Throughout the day I’ve received a shot of rocephin, applied coconut oil to the area and taken oral naproxen, I’m on my way home now and considering another bath with apple cider vinegar. I’m scared and even more worried from the cause
@AskAwayHealth2 ай бұрын
Hi! Bartholin cysts can be painful and worrisome. Your healthcare provider has started treatment, but if the cyst worsens, remains inflamed, or you feel unwell, please seek medical attention urgently. Avoid using apple cider vinegar as it may irritate the area, but sitting in a warm bath can help with the pain while the antibiotics start working.

@AskAwayHealth I have been to 2 private gynecologists and 3 free government hospitals. All told me it would come back, and it's too small and risky to remove the gland. There's nothing they can do for me. It never once got infected. However, my question is, what am I supposed to do? Do I have to live with it all my life. I'm only 27.
@AskAwayHealth4 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh! 😕Are there any changes to personal products you’re trying to see if that might help? Tracking any thing in your lifestyle just before a cyst gets infected? I appreciate it can be tough, though.
@antoniabenjamin1054 ай бұрын
@AskAwayHealth I did try a diet change for 7 months. Eradicating meat and diary. Limiting sugar intake. But no change. Additionally, I think I didn't make things clear when I said it never once got infected.. meaning no infection. I have it 5 years now with no infection. It's not infected. Even up to this day. However, the private gynecologist make it seem like if it gets infected, I may be help... like it's a good thing.... I don't understand. They want it to swell really big, apparently, but it never does. It's there, and it's visible. It's not bad, but it is to me. Since I got it from a trauma injury in 2019, I haven't had intercourse since. My sex life is ruined. It swells, and can be very uncomfortable. It goes down after some days, though, to a visible smaller size.

@AskAwayHealthАй бұрын
Hi, thank you for sharing your concern. It sounds like your doctor has assessed the situation and feels it’s stable, which is reassuring. Sometimes, a gel may be prescribed to reduce discomfort during intercourse, especially if there’s irritation or inflammation causing pain. It’s natural to feel a bit uneasy if you’re still experiencing discomfort. Pain during intercourse can happen for various reasons, including sensitive tissue, irritation, or even a condition like a cyst. Keep monitoring how you feel, and if the pain persists or worsens, let your doctor know. They might reassess the area or suggest additional treatments. In addition, it’s always okay to seek a second opinion if you feel unsure. Pain is your body’s way of communicating something, so don't hesitate if you remain worried.
