Love how the guy at the beginning who's making a huge issue about the difference between young woman and virgin fails to realize the cultural understanding at play. For the Jews, it was expected that a young woman, or a woman who hadn't been married, would not have had sexual intercourse outside of marriage. As such, young woman can also reasonably be considered a virgin in that culture. Non-Jewish cultures may not have had similar strict laws about virginity for young women, so its completely reasonable to assume that the Hebrew translators wanted to clarify that they meant virgin, not just any young woman 🤷🏽♂️. In summary, yes there are 2 different words in Hebrew for young woman and virgin. However, they are correlated in that culture, and may not necessarily have been in other cultures, hence the clarification.

The absurdity of theism lies in the practice of its adherents. If you invent the supernatural, then you can just assume anything about it and pretend it's real. The faithful never have to apply skepticism to their God. Theists collectively defined their God into existence. And when they did, they gave this God certain attributes; attributes like being capable of creating a universe. And they gave him the attribute of necessity; being necessary to our very existence. When they look around and see the universe, and see their own existence, they say this is proof of God's existence.

Alma doesn't just mean young woman. It means young UNMARRIED woman. In days prior to this libertine era and certainly in the time and culture of Isaiah, the assumption was that if you said young unmarried woman, you were talking about a virgin. Another point on Isaiah: the only complete copy in Hebrew that's old is the Great Isaiah Scroll. It is dated 2nd century B.C. but shows evidence of being changed and added to up until 68 A.D. So orthodox Jews are relying on one scroll and they are hoping we will be convinced by their claims to know Hebrew better than others because they are Jews. But ancient Hebrew culture is just as removed for them as anyone else.

I think a great point is Joel 1:8: Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth. A virgin with a husband is an oxymoron. The word used is betula the one claimed to mean virgin. It is clear from the context that it can't mean virgin and also the rest of times the word alma is used it could mean virgin (or young woman who should be a virgin at least in theory in biblical israel).

For The student at 13:51 2 Timothy 3:16-17 [16]All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, [17]so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Peter 1:20-21 [20]Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. [21]For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. In essence, God was the hand, man was the pen. He told over 40 men over a period of time what to write down. The Bible has NO contradictions whatsoever. It is the most complete historical record ever made. Good question, and you are correct, but Paul himself says he is the least of the apostle born out of season. But yes reading in acts we see that Paul met with the other apostles to compare notes so to speak and he taught the same things, so I don't think his knowledge of Christ was any less authoritative than any of the other apostles.

If you’re down and God forbid that you’re in this state, but if you are, then read my little book, Gift by P W Hunt. It might help. I'm just a copy writer and certainly not a Shakespeare. Initially I was going to call it Paul’s small book of happy pills. But in a dream I saw a conveyor belt, chock a block, full of books all covered in brown paper covers, except for one which was called Gift. You have a duty to God to be successful and you can be providing you believe it’s possible. Yes prayers help. But sometimes you need a bit extra. Maybe I can lift you.

@@Theo_Skeptomai Yes I can. Many years ago when I was still a young man I read this poem. I had business worries. I owed money and couldn’t see a way out. Actually I felt like puking blood. But after reading it I got a peaceful feeling and thought everything would be ok, and got a good nights sleep. Then a miracle happened. I had manufactured thousands of cans of diet product that I couldn’t sell. I’d tried everything. But then this guy turns up out of nowhere and buys all of it from me. I was stunned but very relieved. However the poem did the trick. Because it changed my mindset. I went from despair to hope. And because I acquired the outlook that everything would be ok, it then became possible for it to become ok. Such is the greatness of this poem. And because William Cowper understood worry he knew how to remove it. Actually he was quite a troubled soul who suffered from fears and insecurities and had suicidal tendencies. On one attempt at suicide he went off to drown himself in the local river but got lost in the fog and ended up back where he started. I wrote a wee book to inspire others and dedicated it to William. He’s a great guy.

@@Theo_Skeptomai God performed the miracle. I didn’t do it. And it happened in a very mysterious way. However William’s poem opened up the way for it to happen. He got me to believe everything was going to be ok. The lesson to be learned is to be positive and not negative. And although I wanted to be positive I was so swamped by my worries I was trapped in despair. However if we can somehow elevate into a believing state, then God then can enter the equation and make the impossible, possible. But first we have to believe. This is hard for you because you don’t believe in God, but just because you don’t believe, it doesn’t mean it’s not true, just because it’s not true for you. You have the spirit of unbelief. This is a spiritual condition that prevents you from believing in God. It’s not the facts that are stopping you. It’s unbelief. I’m not sure if you can rid yourself of it. It’s so very powerful that no evidence will ever convince you. You are looking for ways to believe but it’s the aforementioned unbelief that’s your problem. Perhaps if you ever managed to get into a state whereby you actually realise you have a preference for God to not exist, it would be a revelation that might begin to untangle you from your unbelief. It’s no good going on and on saying where’s the evidence. That’s not going to do it for you. You’ve got to get rid of the condition that’s preventing you from believing. Here is an example. Donald Trump is a very nice person. I see this so very clearly. But not everyone sees him this way. This is because the lenses in their mind are misinterpreting what they are seeing. Jealousy is playing an important role in this distortion. A wise person will recognise this. Are you wise if you don’t fear God. Solomon the wisest person who ever lived, apart from Jesus Christ, essentially said that wisdom is not given to those who choose to not fear God. But you won’t understand this. If and when you find God let’s talk some more. But until then, you have all the wrong questions which cannot be answered because without the foundation of believing in God they cannot be understood. Therefore it is pointless talking about them. And that’s not a fob off. That’s a fact albeit because of your unbelief you cannot accept it. Unless you’re at a stage like John Cassin the atheist then regrettably a discussion cannot be had. I wish you well on your journey. But don’t be offended because the discussion has come to an end. Good luck.

@@paulwilfridhunt Your message seems to me that one needs to be positive, join your cult, and agree to be indoctrinated into your belief system. But you fail to realize that belief is not a choice. One either has reason to accept the proposition for the existence of a God or they don't.

I'll grant Cliffe his point that 'young woman' and 'virgin' were interchangeable back in those days and one could be correctly translated from the other, so that's not an issue for me. The issue for me is much more regarding how the whole Bible as we know it today came about in the first place and as a result of knowing this, how much it can be relied upon in terms of being a divine book, as opposed to a book made by human beings? Not that there is anything wrong with books written by human beings but when a book claims to be divinely inspired and not just human-inspired, then that needs to be investigated, so we need to look at this. Let me start off by saying, at the risk of stating the obvious, the Bible we know today didn't fall out of the sky followed by a booming voice from the clouds saying "THIS IS MY WORD, READ IT". I only wish it had, that would have been much more straightforward but what actually happened was that some writings done by MANY different authors were found and put together by a committee that took it upon themselves to make this thing called 'The Bible'. It's not like God directly said to them 'harken though, oh men, I have chosen thou to be my divine committee and thou shalt put together these writings and make what I shall name thereof the Bible, my inspired word'. No, not quite, I'm afraid, This is roughly how the Bible ACTUALLY came about. They (this committee) presumed or took it upon themselves to put together various writings they discovered, and they put them into some sort of order and put names to them, eg, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers etc. Then much later, a good 400 or so years later, others who took over the role of managing the Bible added what we call The New Testament, which came from accounts of the life of Jesus Christ. Four accounts were chosen out of many versions (the others were rejected by this committee) and added to the whole Bible, and they were given the names, Mattew, Mark, Luke and John). Then further added was a story giving an account of the Acts of the original followers of Jesus (Acts of the Apostles) then also some letters that various Apostles of Christ sent to each other. Then sometime, even later, the Book of Revelation was, well, dare I say RELUCTANTLY added to the collection. I say RELUCTANTLY because it was considered for a while (it still is by some) to be rather incoherent and not a good fit into the rest of the New Testament, and it was thought by some to be maybe just the ravings of someone who had a mental breakdown or was on drugs but after some discussions between the different members of the self-appointed 'Bible Committee' they agreed to include this Book of Revelation, this was the last book to have ever been added to the Bible as we know it today and like I said, it is still a subject of much debate among Christians regarding what it all meant or if it even should have been included in the Bible at all. Then we also had the different translations of the Bible that occurred, including eventually the English translation, originally the King James version but further to that, we also got what's known as the New International Version, which attempted to modernise the language a lot more, because there were many terms that were very outdated and caused confusion, so it made sense to try to update it in order that people of today could understand what the authors back then meant when they said certain things, eg, the word 'needle' today means something different to what the word 'needle' sometimes meant back then in that part of the world, where it could sometimes refer to a gate that camels could not get through easily when it was shut, hence what Jesus said about a camel and the eye of the needle etc. Today, here in the western world, we only think of sowing needles. Now, this history of the Bible is all interesting, sure, and I'm not saying that because of all of this, therefore, the Bible cannot be the inspired word of a divine being but what I am saying here is that the history of the Bible and how it was put together is very complicated, and it calls into question how much of it can be relied upon when you consider all of the many different people involved in the making of it, many of whom never actually met each other, for example, the people who put the Old Testament together couldn't possibly have met the ones who later on added the new Testament due to their being a good 4oo years in between, so we can't possibly know if they would have been in agreement or not. As for the original authors of the different writings, well, the Jews (as a whole) believe Moses wrote the first five books of the O/T (they refer to it as The Torah) but common sense would dictate that among other things, Moses couldn't have written about his OWN death, which is told of in one of those books (Deuteronomy) so that in itself raises a question mark over this presumption, so at best, it would have to be taken that more than one author was involved, maybe including the one known as Moses, presuming he existed, although, oddly, there is no evidence for Moses ever existing at all, I'm afraid. Then we have many of the other books of the O/T that nobody knows for sure who they were written by, such as the Book of Ecclesiastes, which I think is one of the most interesting books of the Bible and was widely believed to have been written by King Soloman but nobody knows for certain, it's a guess. I could go on but if you've managed to read this far, I can understand that you might be getting rather bored, especially if you're a Christian, so I won't go on any further, suffice to say that the whole history of the Bible is far too controversial for me to put my trust in it without question and I don't think anyone else should put their trust in it either without asking a lot of questions, like who gave the original committee and the latter committees that took over from them the right to decide which writings should be included and which ones should be rejected from the Bible and how can we know whether they made the right choices or not???

Thanks for your thoughts. I would also like to add that I don't think the bible is a reliable source of events. Too many times the laws of nature has to be suspended in order for the story to make any sense.

The danger is that many people actually believe God told King Saul to kill all the Amalekites. They believe the same God told them to fly airplanes into buildings. That was a really good read John, pretty much spot on regarding how the Bible was put together, I think Psalms also were songs originally, and put into the Bible at some point, .. also, have you ever read Song of Solomon in the Old testament, some of it is quite raunchy, talking about womens breasts and lips.. i can imagine ancient Monks getting off on reading that, and letting their imagination run riot .. it's quite juicy stuff. Dare I say Bible porn !! I've mentioned this before, I live not too far from the man who was the first person to translate the Hebrew/Greek Bible into English, he lived about 30 mins drive from here in Gloucestershire, near where my mother was born, you may know the name William Tyndale, a very devout and pious Christian who wanted English people to read the Holy book in a language they were familiar with, but the powers that be in England did not want it translated into our mother tongue, so they accused him of heresy, and he went into hiding, anyone found with a copy of the Bible in it's English translation could be put to death, .. the authorities eventually caught up with Tyndale in Belgium I think, and he was burnt at the stake. The whole story would be worthy of a decent movie i think. Had we lived back then John, we'd be viewed as heretics and burnt alive at the stake for daring to question the Bible. Thankfully our morals have evolved.
