86 guys are just like Miata car guys. Broke, new to modding cars, slow with simple mods. But unlike Miata guys… they actually take car of their cars and keep them for a while. Where Miata guys normally run their into the ground and are willing to trade it at any opportunity for an upgrade lol I remember when these and s13’s were like $1,000 for a stock clean one. $1,500 was a stupid expensive and normally a amateur flipper who bought it for $1,000

My 1966 Porsche 911 became too valuable to daily drive and I wondered what could possibly be as fun. Not only fun but what could have a chance of appreciating in value. It had to have that special something. Racing heritage,star of tv or movies or the start of a major change in car culture. It also should be reliable with support and parts available. Economical is almost too much to ask for. Then my son showed me Initial D. The Ae86 said "I'm your huckleberry". Somehow I missed Initial D growing up and Japanese cars were rusty tin econoboxes. Blinded by movies like Grand Prix and tracks like Monza,Monaco and the Ring it seemed only the European cars could be worthy of fame. Then along came the FD rotary and Godzilla Skyline and gave everyone a bloody nose. Before they showed up there was the little Corolla that could. Initial D was way closer to what us kids in SoCal were doing. Hot rodding the grocery getter and hitting the twisty mountain roads. And Drifting! What a nonsensical way to drive. Overheating the tires and burning extra fuel. Gonna need at least one extra pit stop. You'd have to be a kid fresh from spinning donuts in a parking lot to understand it. There's a little bit of that kid in all of us and the new cars won't let him come out and play.

Bruuuuh.. my dad had a 1989 corolla hatchback just like the ones here, that's the one where i practiced how to drive manual. it was slow, burned oil, and smelled like exhaust ..i liked the styling but hated everything else. We ended up junking it/retiring it for $1,200 I was'nt into cars back then but now every time I see how much they are sought after and the history they have... it hurts knowing we just tossed it out like we did lol

I want an 86 so bad but they're damn hard to come across up here in Canada. I've seen one for 3k, 20k, and 30k. 20k one sold not too long and man was it a bad deal, no carpet, no working AC or heat and a boatload of other issues. keeping my eye on the 3k one, no idea if its a gts or sr5 though. 30k one is in absolute perfect condition. Unfortunately I can't even afford the 3k one :(

I like this car and owned one for few years. It was nice without knowing that it would have so much hype after 20 years and I sold it because it was outdated then. But this car is old and hard to have spare parts. It is almost like owning one is loosing a lot more. I thought how about these guys move into another balanced cars of a later years - of early 2000's or a bit later models ?
