How many AE86 's did Toyota produced worldwide? A question we try to answer in this video. This episode started because two of our Truenos were 40 cars between each other on the assembly line in 1987 and now they live in the same shed. We also uncover some rare photos and interviews with the head designers and engineers on the AE86 chassis.

I’m glad you call the SR5s and GTS’ an AE86, in which they are. The Initial D kids and a few Aussies like to complain that they’re AE85s (which we’re never sold in the USA) and the AE88 (which is just to tell the owner it’s a GTS car) but it’s always nice to see someone so reputable get the information correct.

Randall A That my friend is a AE86 DX, not a GTS. All USA cars are AE86s, stamped on the firewall. You have a DX SR5, which is a base model SR5.

I just realised, building the export models in the Aichi prefecture makes sense, as Nagoya has a large port and would make exporting quicker instead of the Shizuoka plant, which is not on the coast line. This video is such a win and I rewatch it from time to time. I remember driving with my AE86 next to its plant in Shizuoka, when I bought it in Japan.

I think more then half of US ae86 are current here in Puerto Rico. My mom's first car was a manual ae86, she didnt have it for long considering my dad got his hands on it on one day she went on a trip and wrapped it around a tree.

The valve sizes are the same also, and the port sizes are very similar as well IIRC. With them both being 1.6L performance engines though, that's to be expected. The laws of physics don't change because they're being written in Japanese instead of English. Is an SR20 a copy of a 4G63,or the FA20 a copy of both of the others because they all have the same bore and stroke when they're all 2L engines?
