What a great video. I started looking for these out of curiosity, not expecting the price to have gotten like it is. To be honest, even though I really want this car because of how it looks (huge fan of the white body, boxy design of the old corollas), I think it’ll be a dumb decision. Have no idea what is not being fully disclosed by the selller. Like you said, parts are expensive, miles are high. I wish things were different haha. I’d love an old, reliable, good looking car. Couldn’t care less if auto or manual or 100 horsepower or 300. The aesthetics makes the whole thing.

Been looking to buy an 86 SR-5 hatch as a daily. Found a couple of clapped out ones and left notes behind. Good video, dude. KZbin recommended it to me since I'm getting ready to buy my childhood dream car and have been watching a lot of videos about them again. I saw that BaT listing you mentioned for 33k and man does that car look gorgeous but I immediately thought to myself that I'd be too scared to drive it. So I left notes on the two clapped silver cars in my neighborhood that definitely need paint and interior work lmao

I spent a lot of time to find one and got one during peak Covid from across the US sight unseen. 1986 SR5 -> GT-S conversion w/ non running 20 valve silvertop 4A-GE. I'd wanted one for 16 years!! I will be posting chill videos of bringing it back to life in about a year, trying to show as much detail as possible since the forums and pictures are all dead and its hard to find info now days

@@hakosan86 i agree! Something about these cars... I am hooked and absorb every bit of content I can find. Its a 3-door hatch with usdm levin tail lights, and either jblood or an ebay knockoff for the front, sides and rear if i recall. Sunroof car with some sunroof rust, plenty of damage, loads of broken neglected things to restore and care for. Just makes me love it all the better.

I found one, I think it might be GTS model not a hatch, it's sitting at a shop about a mile from my house, it's automatic, got everything needed for a manual swap, but it's in rough condition, no visible rust to the exterior, but the exhaust is being supported by nothing more than the ground, so I'd take it that it's fairly rusted out. Dents to the front bumper and hood, the car is growing moss on it, I posted a community tab post about it on my yt channel, how much would you say it's worth?

Ive had mine since I believe 2004. Its been quite interesting watching the market lately. Theres an estimated 8000~ or so GTS models originally in the US (100% accurate numbers are difficult to track, but it looks like around 2000~ GTS models per year were brought in from japan for about 4 years). Sprinkle some desire, nostalgia, and demand, ontop of the observation that half of these were smashed into a wall, drifted off a mountain, or just crumpled in the yards because "its just an old corolla", and youve got a recipe for high prices sadly.

They are as real of an 86 as the ones in Japan. But yeah your right the ones in Japan are more expensive because of all the rare Japanese parts that they got on them.
@SidewaysGts2 жыл бұрын
"Also its cheaper in the states as they aren't real AE86s" Both SR5s and GTSs in the states are real ae86s. There is some confusion from those unfamiliar as the VIN of the GTS says ae88 (while the vin on the Sr5 does amusingly enough say ae86)- But these cars are called Ae86 due to the *chassis* code of the vehicle, not the vin. Both SR5 and GTS models have AE86 chassis, and are stamped as such on the firewall.

I’d say, unless it’s showroom condition, don’t pay over $8,000 for one of these. Yeah sure, Ae86s are cool, but they really aren’t worth it if you are paying that much for what is pretty much a 40 year old Toyota Corolla.
