Great video, informative. To your last point, why would there be water in the foundation in the winter?

Because water moves through the soil year round. Go to my www.AsktheBuilder.com website and read all my past columns on linear french drains.

Where I'm at we have extremely sticky clay soils. Seems like the guys here prioritize speed of flow to carry any silt that might make it to the pipe vs trying to line everything with cloth, it clogs so easy

Water travels through sand, just much slower than coarse stone. There was little silt in the sand delivered to the job site.

When they put drain tiles in my development in 1970s they ran them to a French drain underground and never to daylight. Works fine for the houses on the top of the hill but not so much for the houses on the bottom of the development. Bottom houses get all the water from the top of the hill and I’m sure the underground French drains just fill up and back flow into the basements. Some houses had to have sump pits installed. Newer building codes state they must run to daylight or a storm drain.

Always wondered. If in a given area the freeze point is 18 inches and footer must be to that level, what happens if soil is replaced with rock? Does freeze point change?🦇

No. Think about the void spaces around the added rock. What do they get filled with?

@@askthebuilder Thanks. I have a crawl that is going to need a drain system and I wondered about that issue. I have a "shallow French Drain system at the front of my house rather than gutters. Not for the foundation. I have asked this question before and it sends people to the phone and they never give me an answer!🦇

How deep should you go for a frost line in Wisconsin? 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻

My guess is a minimum of 4 feet and probably 6 feet in northern WI. You do know the correct person to ask, don't you? Who is the custodian of this vital piece of information?
