Interesting! On these BMWs I've always resorted to using my scan tool to retract the parking brake motors before compressing the pistons in (without spinning the piston). The other method I've used was removing the parking brake motor from the caliper and manually retracting the jack screw in the caliper before compressing the pistons. I was always lead to believe that using a conventional caliper compression tool like you used would damage the parking brake system (my factory training for Ford/Chrysler). Good to know that the regular method that you showed works perfectly fine on BMWs. Kudos!

Hi AK! Having a good scan tool is a huge benefit when you can activate the parking brake to service mode. But the conventional method using the special tool is an option for the DIYer. Thabks for posting!

@@AskTheCarExperts Actually, you can just take the backing off and use a torx bit to retract the piston...otherwise, you will damage it.

Hello Just watched your video, but my question is, did you use any diagnostic equipment to unlock the brakes either when you started or when you finished changing the brake calipers.

No, I used a special tool. But if you have a scan tool that can activate it that is much easier BUT make sure the calipers are not removed or it can blow out the piston

Hi Excellent video, I am about to perform my own break service, I see in your video you did not open the brake fluid cap? Is it not necessary? Also is the calculation life span is not calculated together with the rotor?I'll tell you why my front rotor was not replaced since my car was new, and when replacing the pads, it also had a low calculation, replaced the rotor, or like we call in South Africa the break disc, it then adjusted to a higher amount. Thanks in advance.
@AskTheCarExperts
@AskTheCarExperts 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Ahmad Shah, It is a good idea to open the cap. It can help make it easier to push the caliper piston back. Also to make sure the fluid does not overflow. The rotor will have a minimum measurement stamped on the hat portion. You would need to measure with a micrometer and see if it is below minimum. Check for any rust or scoring. If in doubt replace the rotor (brake disc) to be safe. Thanks for watching from South Africa :)

I’m confused as with years of working on Audi, VW and BMWs with rear EPBs I’ve never seen them push back as you were winding them in.. question…did you retract the jack drives on the motor first? That should have been done with the scan tool or as people know you can with a t45 bit and manually retract the drive.. I didn’t see you perform and EPB pre work before you removed the calipers. Also, the tool you are using is only needed for the manual hand brake, if you retracted the EPB like the manual indicates you can just squeeze in the pistons with large channel locks but that’s not advisable because there isn’t much to hold onto due to the plastic motor case. It’s ok to use that rewind tool but you can push it with a without the notched plate a smooth one, because if your retraction is done you don’t have to turn the piston you can compress it like the fronts.. another think you always want to inspect the slider pins, boots and probably clean and regrease them .. and best to clean up the piston face with brass brush to knock some rust off it.. really good job with the video
@AskTheCarExperts
@AskTheCarExperts 9 ай бұрын
Hello, Let me clarify for you. the tool used turns the piston which turns the internal screw to back off the EPB manually. That is the purpose of the tool. At the same time it can push in the caliper piston. You do not want to compress the piston without using the tool or damage can result. Another method is to use an electronic device that can retract the piston into the assembly mode. Do not do this with the caliper off because it will cause the piston to come out of the caliper. Then you can compress normally. Or you can actually remove the drive from the back of the piston.

Hi, Thanks for the video I was wondering what make are the pads and discs? I know they BMW packged but usually a different manufacturer makes discs for them is there any stamps on the actual parts. The reason I was asking is because i want to replace mine and usually ATE, Brembo and Textar make similar discs with the rivets (2piece discs aluminium hub and iron plate).

Hi, thank you for the video, it's the best explained process I've found. Two questions, firstly after loosening the two bolts my caliper really doesn't want to come off (where as yours 'walked' off), any tips on how to get it off? Secondly, can you use a quick grip to push the piston back in? Advice would be greatly appreciated... Thanks.
@AskTheCarExperts
@AskTheCarExperts 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, Try to use a screw driver to help lever out the caliper. You can try to push the piston back a bit by prying on the in board pad. Make sure to only compress one side at a time. You can also use the old pad to help compress the piston evenly.
