I used the same method as you when I practiced presentations in English during my early days: watching Disney channel (mostly), combined with imitating all the dialogues, sometimes acting in front of the mirror, or imagined being interviewed by someone on a certain subject. Imitation is the first step in learning anything, really. Another aspect that I think worth mentioning is that by leaving the TV/ radio on and not actively listening to it (while doing chores, for example), your subconscious still picks up a fair amount of how natives deliver their spoken language. This is inactive learning - just like how a child must be able to hear in order to learn how to speak in the first place. One other thing that I did was learning rap songs. Yes, rap. Mostly Eminem, because I found his articulation the clearest. Once I've had enough habit of mouth movement from rapping, my accent came out more naturally. Rapping as cardio for your mouth muscles works wonder.

English is my second language. Speaking English has been really difficult for me, especially when it comes to conveying my ideas to others in a clear and pronounced manner. Your advice has proven to be incredibly helpful and practical. I'll attempt to imitate a native speaker. Likewise, I'll read passages from the novels I like the most. Thanks for your sharing your methods. Keep up the good work!

Exaggerating mouth movements is how I got better at singing - I've heard singers where I couldn't understand the words and didn't want to be like that, I wanted to be clear, for people to be able to hear the lyrics, the story...this technique really works. I have started applying it to learning French and Spanish too - getting better, bit by bit. Gradually gaining confidence in communicating generally, thanks for your help Vinh, loads of super tips in your vids 🙏😀

I love this. I am an immigrant in the US and English is my first language, but people get frustrated understanding me and I have gotten a little annoyed that I was speaking English and they acted like I was speaking another language.I kept my irritated feelings hidden.I also speak Spanish (not something I mostly learnt naturally) and it is a bit embarrassing that sometimes I feel like I am speaking good Spanish, but native speakers don't get what I am saying I will use that strategy for both English and Spanish.

We are so much creatures of learned habits, after a while we believe that our way of communication is who we are, even if we don't like it, but like all habits it can be changed, if we really take an interest and learn the necessary skills until it becomes a new habit. Thanks for pointing us the in right direction Vinh 🙂

@@edwardwong654 yeah, i do think so, in Vietnam, especially Saigon, Hokkien and Teochew people live in a separate district and they are able to speak fluently Cantonese as their second Chinese language, and Vietnamese language is the third, but the opposite for Cantonese people in Saigon, they don't want to communicate in Hokkein or Teochew language.

I was born in Germany and spent the first 20 years of my life there. However, since my parents are turkish, I grew up speaking Turkish and learned German in kindergarten and school. Currently, I reside in Turkey, and I find myself struggling with effective communication in all three languages. While I learned english through interactions with strangers in video games and consuming english content in general, I consider myself lacking proficiency in all of these languages. Now I'm faced with the dilemma of determining which language to prioritize. Although the decision ultimately depends on my personal goals, I must confess that I currently lack a clear direction or objective. And yes, I used Chat GPT's help to write this text, which just proves my point once again. :')

To know 3 languages is a gift. I suggest start working on the language least easy for you. Your mental muscles will be in a constant workout and then the other languages will be a breeze. Also, whenever you do have kids ( my apologies if I'm assuming you don't!), make sure they learn all 3 languages before age 7. This is the golden age of linguistics and children pick up upto 6 languages in this age group. And the more languages learnt, the higher the IQ, no matter the age. So yes, please don't disregard any language you know as unimportant!
