Hi Bill! I recently found you and I just want to say Thank You! We are adopting a 13 year old, deaf boy from China. He was about to age out of the system and no one wanted him because he was older, he couldn't hear...and he was a boy. I fell in love with him and now we get to be his parents, but we are a hearing family. We sit down in the evening as a family and watch your youtube videos to learn ASL. Thank you so much for creating this program!!! My 3 yr old son is deaf in 1 ear. All of the professionals, doctors, speech paths, audiologist, ect. All said he would be fine and would be able to learn how to speak no problem because he can hear in one ear. We went for an evaluation to get him into early childhood education for an evaluation and labeled him as intellectually disabled because he has a speech delay and he didn't understand what they were asking. I decided to take off work to focus on getting him to talk. We are learning sign together! Within one month of signing with him, he is meeting all of his developmental milestones and speaking and signing in sentences. Again, thank you so much. I owe my child's well-being to this wonderful resource.

My granddaughter contacted the cmv virus at birth in hospital. Now she is four, they have given her a hearing aid with a pretty rainbow on it that she loves. She is also autistic. She loves it so much that she cries to have it on as soon as she’s done her bath. I’m trying to learn asl just in case, in case. But my eyesight is very bad so . . . But with dr. V’s help, I learn when I can and love it very much.

I just LOVE your videos! I am not deaf or H.H. but, as a child, I had a coach who's wife was deaf. (I was about 9-10 years old) I was in awe watching them communicate with ASL. It was my first time seeing it in person, and I loved it so much, I had her teach me what she could. Over the years, I tried to practice as much as I could ( I was also learning Spanish), but I lost a lot of what my first teacher had taught me. Once when I was in college, working at an IHOP, I had a man come in who was deaf. His face lit up when he saw that he could put his note pad and pen away. Just like that, it all came flooding back, and I was just so overjoyed. He told me that I had made his night. That he would never forget me. I never forgot him, either. 10 more years down the line, I have two children. A 7 year old girl and a 5 year old boy. Both have their full hearing abilities and both are able to use ASL enough to have a conversation with someone. That is something I want to pass down to each generation. The gift of communication. Because the best way to touch someone's heart, is to speak to their soul. With or without words. Thank you for making these videos. Not only do I watch them, but my children watch with me. What a great story, I have a deaf co-worker who has to write things down sometimes when things get complicated. When I found out he was on my shift and deaf I started looking for youtube videos that I could learn ASL from so that I could communicate with him efficiently. These videos have been a great help to me. One time at work a food truck came because a business opened up that was close by and they were trying to promote and I was in line and one of my co-workers tapped me on the shoulder and said "I think he wants to ask you about the food". I turned around and it was him and he wanted to know the prices and other things about the food. It makes me so happy to be able to know a decent amount of ASL just from watching this channel. Language learning is very fun and very good for your brain and critical thinking. Thanks for sharing your story with us!

I have been taking lessons from Dr. Bill Vicars off and on for several years now. I work in a major department store. Over the years, my right ear has grown progressively deaf and now without a hearing aid it is totally deaf. In the store, sometimes people can be really rude because I still can't clearly hear them; I ask them to speak up because I am hard of hearing and usually they will shout at me. But I have several Deaf customers I help and I enjoy that.

I love watching your videos. You are so funny! I have hearing loss. I had no clue. I was told I didn't pay attention to what people said. I went for a hearing test to rule it out and see about getting help with paying attention. I was tested about 4 years ago with no hearing loss what so ever. Now I have moderate-severe hearing loss. I was born premature and I have cochlea damage. It leaks so I've very slowly been going deaf my whole life. The doctor told me by the time I was about 30 or 40 I'd be completely deaf. I'm 27 now and I can actually tell I'm pretty bad off. so I'm learning for when I do go deaf completely. It's cheaper than surgery and I won't have to worry about my nephews messing up my hearing aid batteries anymore.

Absolutely adore these videos. Probably sounds really weird but I was first fascinated by sign language when we learned the ASL alphabet in the third grade and watched The Miracle Worker (the one with Melissa Gilbert and Patty Duke). I was desperate to learn but that was the early 90's, I didn't know anyone who actually used ASL, and had no idea where to find more. I scoured the public library and repeatedly took out the one book and signing that they had for kids but that was as far as I got. Came across your videos after my interest was rekindled by the movie "A Quiet Place" and it has been so incredible and wonderful to slowly piece together little bits of language and understanding. Thank you so much for this. At present, I have nothing in my bank account. I wish that was an exaggeration. But when I finally have some sort of financial stability back in my life, I'll gladly and eagerly send some your way.

When I was in grade 6 and my good friend Sheila Bezan was too. We were at St. Paul’s Lutheran school in San Francisco. We had choir practise in the choir loft and we two were s o naughty that we were set on opposite sides of the loft. We got an encyclopaedia and Learned the asl alphabet. We would talk away thru’ the singing and sometimes co-ordinate to leave by crawling out. I wanted to learn asl ever since.

Especially when I am not feeling well enough to go to my local ASL class, and the medical signs, food signs, ok all the signs really help me a lot! Your videos are so helpful, thank you thank you thank you!!!!! My only question is in the title you put "salad" but now I can't remember for sure if "salad" was in there, but now I want to know what salad is, lol. I am hearing, trying to learn so I can better communicate with my best friend's husband and his whole family and friends. I asked my best friend (who is an interpreter and half her family is deaf) about "berry" being the same sign as "cherry" on your pinky but she said she had never seen that and wasn't sure about it, and better to finger spell it out instead. But law of primacy, me learning from you here, I think I will always want to sign berry this way that you've shown. My fingerspelling gets all "tongue tied" and even though I KNOW how to spell a word, I am trying to go so fast, I often fumble my finger spelling, despite loads of practice. *sigh*

I was always curious about how to sign yogurt. I've seen people dip a Y hand into a "cup" haha. For frozen yogurt (which is really popular in new York) me and my Deaf friend just refer to it as "ice cream" but we know we are talking about frozen yogurt. I guess its like an unbrella term. I wonder if its the same for coffee drinks like latte, cappucino, espresso, macchiato. Maybe we would fingerspell it or just sign "coffee" but describe what the drink tastes like.

Elizabeth, I've been tracking that (eat from a cup: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmKcmJprr7BsjJo ) version of the sign for "yogurt" and it is becoming more and more popular. (There was a time, less than a decade ago, when any non-spelled version of "yogurt" was considered Signed English -- I kid you not. Then Yogurt Shops popped up all over the place and yogurt became popular and the community started discussing yogurt more). I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking that the eat from a cup version is about as popular as the spelled version or even more so! Interpreters should definitely know that version in case they see it being used by a client. Plus, get this, the other day Bee (my wife) used the eat-from-cup version of "yogurt" as we were discussing going out for yogurt. So if you feel like using that eat-from-the-cup version go for it!

Kaye, Thank you! As far as how you can "be sure" that you can interpret someone correctly -- there are actual "Interpreter Preparation Programs" at degree granting colleges. There are also interpreter certifications for which you must pass strict and challenging tests. So, the answer to "how can you be sure" -- is for you to go through all of my videos to develop a strong foundation of receptive signing skills, invest many hundreds of hours hanging out with Deaf people, participate in an IPP, and then become certified. Even "certified" interpreters however can't be 100% sure that they "got the right message." In high-stakes situations it is common to bring in a second Hearing interpreter and sometimes a Deaf person who specializes in interpreting (to assist the Hearing interpreter). Such specialists are physically Deaf, have native or near-native signing skills, and training or experience understanding a wide variety of signing styles. If they have certification we call them Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDI's). Dr. Bill

Can berry be signed with either the pointer finger or pinky on the left hand? I see both on the different videos.

Yes. You might see "berry" done with either the pinkie or the index finger. My recommendation would be to use the index finger as your preferred sign HOWEVER I've noticed that over the years I'm seeing more and more people spell it! This might be due to the influence of one handed signing while holding a phone. Also it depends on individual circumstances. For example blueberry will do a one-movement version of blue and the segue into the spelling of "berry." The index finger version tends to default to "strawberry" or just "berry" out of context (thus you need context). Strawberry has four or five other signs as well. Lately / these days --I don't recommend the pinkie version of berry. You should recognize it if you see it. Then use the pinkie version for "cherry." (Cherry however has other versions as well -- but the pinkie version is fairly well recognized.)

When I was in High School, my ASL teacher showed us a sign for yogurt. She did a Y handshape on her palm and moved it back and forth. Is that correct, or just a regional thing, perhaps? Additionally, I was taught "pumpkin" as "orange melon". Same with others, such as " squash" is "yellow melon".

TJ, Great question! The noun version of the sign for cannabis taps the lips twice (using the tip of the F-handshape). The verb form holds the tip up to the lips and literally draws a breath (to mean "inhale cannabis." Strawberry has many versions but the particular version being discussed is a compound of "red" and "stick a small item into your mouth." that has mutated (evolved) over the years). The movement does a very quick downward flick of the index finger pad at the lips followed by bringing the tip of the F-handshape to or near the lips.

Most Deaf have better peripheral vision than Hearing people have. In general, Deaf drivers have fewer accidents than Hearing drivers. Also, "horn honking" is generally less about "safety" and more about people expressing their displeasure with others or telling the person in front of them to get moving since the light has turned green. (Which isn't a matter of safety but rather of expediting traffic flow).

I read lips very well but since the pandemic started is has been quite traumatic because I can’t read lips, specially in medical facilities. Which unfortunately, I need almost daily. I assure you that I have done nothing on "my end" to speed up the video. The basic fact is--I have no one to impress. There is no reason for me to speed up any of these videos. The videos are intended for beginners. Another reason for them not being sped up is that it would literally take effort for me to do so and I'd rather invest my effort in creating more videos than waste it speeding up an existing video (for no reason). Note that this video plays for 40 minutes and 30 seconds. That coincidences with the original length of my upload. So what I think you may be seeing is your local device's buffer playing catch-up on occasion. If you watch the video from a standard browser you'll have the option (via the little gear cog settings icon) to slow down the video. You might want to try that. Or try starting the video and letting it play all the way through while you go work on some project then come back and RE-play the video to watch it (thus it will likely be totally downloaded and sitting in your internet cache and not need buffering).. Again though any "speed ups" you may be seeing are not part of my upload process.

I encourage you to not be duped by that myth. Also don’t confuse how something is signed versus how something is explained. In real life ASL usage we often sign “sugar free” using the signs “sugar” + “free” -- and then if someone doesn’t understand what that means we can expand or explain it by signing “sugar none.” You don’t have to take my word (or sign) for it.
