Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. You can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here right now and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

Thank you so much for these videos! They are really helpful and super easy to understand. I started lifeprint in 2018 and I've finished lessons 1-60! In the process of learning this language, I met a family whose oldest daughter is Deaf. These videos helped me communicate comfortably with her. Thank you!

"Country" as in the US or Canada and "country" as in a rural area, depend on context?
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
Brian, Yes, the various meanings of "country" in ASL depend on context. To make it even more complex, the sign COUNTRY can also mean COUNTY. The meanings and usage of the signs for COUNTRY vs COUNTY are inconsistent in the Deaf Community. The American Sign Language (ASL) sign for “county” varies. Some of the common ways to sign “county” include: 1. Fingerspell “county.” (This is a VERY common approach). 2. Sign “county” with a dominant arm flat hand making a circular motion on the non-dominant forearm. This sign can also mean “country or rural.” 3. Sign “county” with a dominant “Y” hand making a circular motion on the non-dominant forearm. (This sign can also mean “country.”) Note: You may also see other versions of the concept for “county.” For example, in a vlog Chanel Gleicher, Miss Deaf America 2012- 2014 (and a National Association for the Deaf Ambassador) signed, “I also gave a performance at the Mid-Atlantic Deaf and Hard of Hearing Festival at Howard County, MD.” She signed the concept of “county” by spelling “CO” using a sideways slide movement. (The fingerspelling of “CO” is commonly associated with the meaning of “company” or “corporation.” You now have an example of it being used to mean “county.”) Source: Gleicher, Chanel (Apr 10, 2013) “Share: Miss Deaf America's Vlog -- April 2013,” NADvlogs, web: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4Wld5ytr69gq5o (54 second mark) Note: Sometimes the “right” sign for county may be to not sign it at all. The concept of “county” can be omitted in ASL if it is moot (unimportant”). For example, Deaf newscaster Melissa Huber chose to omit the sign “county” when signing the phrase, “Judge Aaron Persky gave him 6 months in county jail and 3 years probation.” The concept of “county” that report was fairly unimportant to the overall message of the newscast and the enjoyment / enrichment of the typical viewer. (Source: Huber, Melissa Y. (2016, June 8) “Outrage Grows over Six-Month Prison Sentence” DTV News, web: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIere5qoeaqZqNE ). However, again - it is very common to simply spell “county.” Doing so helps to avoid confusion with "country." Sometimes however if by "country" you mean "farm area" -- you should just sign FARM.
