ASM's Hydrasynth is a tremendously powerful digital synthesizer with its own rich set of options for sound design. It uses a unique sonic vocabulary throughout, offering deep options that any synthesist will love exploring. The oscillators provide 219 waveshapes and the option for WaveScanning-a wavetable-like technique for smooth wave morphing.
Each Hydrasynth voice also features four Mutators (or Mutants)...processes that enable classic effects like FM, sync, and PWM. The Mutators take each of these techniques into far deeper territory than typically possible, however, often transforming these familiar tricks into something entirely new.
Even without touching the filters or effects, the Hydrasynth is an incredibly powerful instrument.

What's not to like? The most economical method of selecting oscillators, filters, envelops, LFOs and mutators with 360 degree knobs that are lit to the true parameter setting, for hands on control without too many knobs that would inflate the price, a Ribbon and a Poly AT keyboard, a sound engine that isn't copying most of the stuff out there, all at a price under $1500. Definitely going to be getting one of these this holiday season. Well done review!

I am so happy that I invested my money in this synth. It was much for me and I sold my bike for it, but all the sounds are so pleasing it just makes me happy and satisfied to hear and modulate that thing.. This synths takes you through the whole history and techniques of sound design.. I have experimented with the behringer neutron for one year now... But this thing is a whole sweetspot, wich is compared difficult to reach with a neutron.. And so much possibilities.. I am in love! Guys you need the hydra! :)

I'm kind of late to the party with Hydrasynth and am super impressed by the pace and clarity of this presentation. It's way too easy to get overexcited with this instrument and then think it's way too deep to really have a control beyond a bit of editing of presets. I'm beginning to understand the scarier bits under the hood as I am used to the language here and familiar with the references made to earlier, dare I say it, traditional techniques. Well explained. However, for wave scans by LFOs you should make the modulation unidirectional, e.g. use LFO1+, not just LFO1, as the mod source (or set OSC WAVE to somewhere in the middle of your set, e.g. 4). Otherwise you‘d skip every 2nd waveform.

Yes, it's a very good presentation, indeed. The Hydrasynth is a great synthesizer. I've been eyeing the Deluxe version for a few weeks now. It looks great, it feels great, and it sounds great. What's not to like? The other contender for me is the Matriarch, which is also a specialized synthesizer like the Hydrasynth. Sure, the Matriarch is not as advanced, it has not been designed with AI (Artificial Intelligence) like the Hydrasynth, but rather with circuit diagrams, circuit voicing, and soldering iron. Actually I find it interesting that the Matriarch can complete with an AI technical tour de force. So I guess, it's not always the type of technology used that is compelling, but the level of the instrument specialization that becomes that everything-for-someone instrument, instead of something-for-everyone instruments, such as Yamaha MODX or Korg Nautilus are. Another difference is that both Nautilus and MODX run on a customized Linux platform, while the Hydrasynth's OS (Operating System) is written (or generated) with assembler. That should make the Hydrasynth's OS a very efficiently put together system. Anyway, if they can churn out such software in matter of weeks instead of months and years, we can expect an explosion of other products from the company. I can see an analogy to another synthesizer here, the Nord Lead, which generated a shockwave in the synthesizer market in 1995. Looks like the Hydrasynth generated the same type of shockwave today. Everyone seems to have the Hydrasynth today, like everyone seemed to have the Nord Lead back in 1995.

Thanks, this helped a lot! I still have questions in my head about exactly how all these things are implemented. For example, how can a mutator "sync" another mutator's output if it's already something complex like a wave stack? That seems impossible to me. Is a wave stack genuinely made of five oscillators? If so, using wave stack mode on two mutants in series would mean that "under the hood" the synth is using 25 oscillators. Or is there a shortcut cheat being used for that? So many questions... I'm going to read the Signal article anyway, to see if any of them are answered :)

Thanks for the excellent detail of this synths capabilities . Like so many have said it’s an amazing, original, well laid out synth at an extremely reasonable price they deserve to sell a ton of them. I am tempted by it, but also, as many have said, not taking the opportunity to have an analog filter is a bit of a mistake. I have my fingers crossed this will be so successful ASM will eventually do an XL version, at a higher price point, with 5-octave keybed and analog filters and maybe more polyphony, it would then truely be a “must buy”!

So algorithms are pre defined for sync like effects detuned modulation and timbre. So are the LFOS section applied by default? To the waves? For the mod wheels not just to be directed to them in a mod matrix? Peace Christo 🎶👽🐕🛸☮️At the actual non mutation level first?

There are a couple of pre-set modulation paths by default (from the first LFOs and EGs to the filters and Amps)...but modulation of everything else has to be set up through the matrix. That said, using the Module Select buttons, it's super easy to create new modulation paths: just hold your source and destination buttons and a modulation path is created instantly. Given all the crazy parameters for PWM, Sync, FM, etc., you can actually go pretty far without involving other modulation sources. It's good to go into these sections without thinking about how they would typically work, and just re-learn what they mean in this context. In many cases, the Mutator Ratio control can be a great substitute for an LFO, for instance.

Thank you for sharing this. :) When demoing and discussing the "brute force" modulation of the wavetable sounds, you say there's no control over the order of the waves. It occurs to me that the Step LFO could be much more useful in that regard. You could dial in whatever waves you want on a step LFO, I would think. Since we have 5 LFOs with delays, the potential for long, rhythmic sequences is pretty huge. What I don't know yet is how the LFO smoothing on a step LFO might change that wave effect. Would it still just bang through the wavetable or would it be glitchy, or could we get smoother transitions? It's something I plan to look into once I get my Hydrasynth. Anyway, I think it's possible to get some Wavestation-esque sequences running on this synth. :)

Yes, carefully crafting the Step LFOs could be a way to change the order of waves-but transitions between waves would still be sudden/instantaneous. Let's say you were switching between wave 27 and wave 59 using an alternating step LFO-if you add smoothing, it will still scan all the waves between 27 and 59 at a rate determined by your smoothing factor. Of course, you could always do stepped modulation of the WaveScan parameter-adjusting the smoothing to taste could yield really cool results here: everything from jarring to super smooth is possible there, but just modulating the wave in Single mode is always more abrupt.

I have to admit I've resisted my primal urge to want to buy and use a hardware synth, but this one actually has something that the current best software synth (serum) doesn't, and that's an easy way to scan between two or select wavetables (it should be said that serum has dozens of features that this doesn't however). In serum you either have to set Rm or AM from B (or A if your if you're using the second Osc.) or manually import them in the wavetable editor, which is time consuming. of course it should be noted that unless you setting to an LFO or envelope so that the wave is scanning between the tables as you play, then there isn't a difference between just playing two oscillators with two wavetables. Alas I find it especially useful because morphing two tables together is often very much trial and error. I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but if this synth allows for the addition of more tables (like peak or Minilogue or Prologue XD do, surely it's not that hard) then this will be a great synth. while some of the factory tables look useable, synth manufacturers' idea (humanities idea for that matter) of what makes for good wavetables is fairly limited honestly. It's still dumb expensive if you ask me, like serum and a midi keyboard wouldn't cost a third of what this costs, but hey (shrugging emoji). Also this guys vocal fry makes me want to cut myself off from society entirely.

What you forget is that your usual midi-keyboard has no polyphonic aftertouch. Just patching it to something as obvious as the filter-cutoff makes it some much more expressive. You can just play one single chord and stay on it forever while you modulate the timbre of each note individually. It has this Blade-Runner-preset - gives me goosebumps every time

Both are excellent synths with very flexible oscillators and modulation. The Super 6's main draw (for me) is its binaural sound, which just blew me away. The Hydrasynth sounds excellent too, but is 'just' stereo (with the effects). Used binaurally, the Super 6 is six voice, where the Hydrasynth is eight voice (with one voice potentially used up by the ribbon). Both are well build. The Hydrasynth has the better interface; frankly, it's the best interface on a complex synth I've ever seen. The Super 6 is also almost double the price.

Hello eveyone. Help NEED. I own a Hydrasynth keybord. I am trying to record it (MIDI) on Logic X and only the cc messages can be automated while recording. Modwheel ,pitchbend and aftertouch. I need help from someone on the solution to control for example the macro knobs of each preset or any other way i can automate cutoff for example live during recording.Please 🙏🙏🙏

But my setup is complex between midi Din and USB midi routing. It is kind of weird that it doesn't send the automation in any channel the synth is set. I like your projects. Keep it up..

It's pretty easy to make both good and bad sounding patches with the HydraSynth. I really like it's development of the wave table side like the old Prophet VS. It's highlight is a working poly aftertouch keyboard. It works well. Some after market poly after touch keyboards are as much as the price of this HydraSynth itself. I've listened to all 5 banks of the free factory presets available plus 3 after market programmers I liked. My favorite patches so far are from the after market patch bank from app-sound called Hydra Galaxy. It's really good in that it sounds natural, warm, not too many effects, and really useful sounds. Polyphony is restricted on every synth ever. My Moog has one note polyphony, but no-one ever complained! To meet a certain price point, processor power is capped. Want more notes? Buy two and link them.

Very DX7 FM soundy. Didn't like the DX7, don't like this one either. Very aliased sound, cheap components with low bit depth. Would like to hear what one with exactly (functionally) the same software running on decent higher bit depth hardware sounds like.
