The new Ashun Sound Machines (ASM) Hydrasynth keyboard is an eight-voice synth with rich options for sound design: with Wave Scanning oscillators, sound shaping via multiple Mutators, two flexible filters per voice, and a fully-thought-out effects section, Hydrasynth is a sound designer's dream.
It offers full polyphonic aftertouch, a large ribbon controller, and an intense arpeggiator with randomness and ratcheting built in. And of course, the modulation section is formidable: five complex envelopes, five complex LFOs, CV/Gate I/O and a 32-path modulation matrix make it possible to create everything from classic key sounds to evolving generative soundscapes.
In this video, we explore some of the Hydrasynth's presets. If you're interested to learn more about the Hydrasynth's design process, check out our interview with ASM design director Glen Darcey here: www.perfectcircuit.com/signal...

I added this synth to my collection after avoiding digital synths for many years with a focus on analog and sampling. This is a full on digital synth with zero apoligies. It has teeth and bad breath unless you tame it, try running the output through a decent effects box or 3 and a few analog filters. Another world!

I think the Hydrasynth is the best digital synth ever made in a long time, these people clearly know what they're doing, I got my eyes on one because a friend of mine got it and I'm not super keyboard player but the afterrouch on this synth is excellent. I want to see ASM analog synth in the near future.

I don't even know how to play piano really, but I want this thing so god damn bad it hurts. I'm wondering if it has standard presets like a rock poly synth or a grand piano. I have a korg microsynth and those sounds are very difficult to recreate and are not a part of the presets sadly

The new set of patches by Sun God RA are even better than the factory presets. I got my keyboard version last week and it’s the absolute shizzle. None of the KZbin vids really do the sound quality justice and the fact it’s not analogue doesn’t matter, that’s where it’s strength is tbh. The way they’ve designed it and the way the workflow is set up is so simple to grasp and the options are almost limitless. It’s a really, really impressive piece of kit.

@@Dr.Don.Cornelius Simple waveform synth has little chance to synthesize Grand Piano. The best FM synth can reproduce E.Piano. Grand Piano is synthesized by V-piano (Roland). E.g. Roland Fantom supports V-piano and less complex PCM SuperNatural set of pianos.

I really have to appreciate the friend who let me play one of these for a couple hours -- no external processing, just the HS itself. I found the selling point to be more the quality of sound and the poly aftertouch, where this uploader seems more interested in wacky sounds and the arpeggiator. So clearly, a synth which can be used in a variety of ways, and still satisfy very different purposes

FYI, I thought anyone here might want to know this. I just purchased my Hydrasynth Desktop from Sweetwater, have had it only had it 3 days now. I discovered that it now ships with Presets Patches in all 5 Banks (A B C D E). There are not any Empty Banks. Also some seemed to be differewnt than the ones I saw here and on several tutorials on KZbin. I was curious about this and contacted Ashun Sound Machines Support and they confirmed this. Anyway this Synth is incredible, with 2 more Banks of presets I am just starting to experiment with them all before I start to create my own Presets. Here is their email response: Hello, Yes we have now included 2 more banks and updated the patches as well. Please use the patch manager if you would like to arrange banks differently . You can also refer to our KZbin channel for more videos on this. Kind regards, Support

Carlos Alberto Araya Flores Hi Carlos, I don’t know exactly what do you mean by “experimental music”. Do you mean something like “Contemporary Music?”. But coming back to your question. I don’t know how are you going to use this synth: live or studio? To me, all the factory presents are very nice and I find them ready-to-go live. For further research on sound done in a studio context, I really think that you have to tweak them a bit to make them sit good in the mix with some personality. However: it depends what’s in the mix... The ready-to-go sounds have sometimes too much reverb or effects built in the patch but it is very easy to get rid of them and dismantle the patch to its fundamental waveform combination and then re-built it as you wish. There are plenty of knobs to tweak so you get the feeling that you see what you are doing, which is nice in my opinion.

Haut Strange after further listening I’m not sure the use of samples would give it the edge I’m looking for but I’ll remain hopeful. The raw waves sound interesting but the output seems like it’s seriously lacking weight in certain frequencies. AkaTengu I’ve seen numerous videos talk about it being built like a tank so I’m hopeful. There is so much here, programmability wise that I’m sure you could get just about any tone you wanted. It sounds great, well done all involved with it. I wonder how many people will buy it, and, because it has poly AT and a ribbon, will expect to sound just like Vangelis? There seems to be a lot more to it than simply a CS-80 sound-a-like?
@HotStrange

I think the target market for this synth likely knows what they’re getting into for the most part. There may be a few like you mentioned but I imagine most people are buying it with full intentions.
@PhilAndersonOutside

But the CS-80 was so pure analog. This machine is proudly digital. Having said that, a real key to Vangelis style was that he truly knew how to make use of poly AT in an expressive way. So your point is valid there.

I had to get one and add it to my arsenal after hearing cEvin Key (from Skinny Puppy) rave about this synth endlessly, which he now uses as one of his main boards/synths on their Final Tour. ( He uses the 37 key version live (Explorer), but he said 'if ya got the money buy the 49 key - or the full size' ). I purchased the 49 key version. Can't wait till next week when it gets here. (Hopefully safely! I've heard the packaging is a bit flimsy - at least on the Explorer).

so besides the obvious differences/advantages (performance ability, keyboard, etc.) what makes this better than a good vst? maybe it's a dumb question, but im seriously considering shelling out the cash for this bad boy. Does this sound better than a $200-$500 softsynth?

I totally agree with Dacci Pucci. Although you can’t bring a softsynth with you to band practice (without also bringing along a computer and a keyboard). For me, the “all you need in one package” concept is really appealing. Also, the ability to just turn on a single machine and instantly play/design sounds without the need for a computer is why I’d get this one over a softsynth (and an expensive poly-aftertouch midi keyboard to go with it). But it’s all about personal preferences in the end, though.

I'm listening, but while the patches are full of sound, it doesn't sound particularly musically inspiring to me (except perhaps 11:35 onwards). It seems like a fun synth to work with, however, and - as others have pointed out - it's probably great for sound design. It also has a great design itself, and I quite love how it looks.

"it doesn't sound particularly musically inspiring to me" Do you get a lot of your musical inspiration from synth patches? I'm just asking because I do, and I was wondering if it's the same case with other people. I find that certain synth patches inspire me, musically, and some synths are more inspiring than others.
@hakonsoreide
@hakonsoreide 4 жыл бұрын
@@gjc82071 There have been several times I have ended up composing melodies when previewing patches, because the sounds themselves have made me play in a certain way that turned into an element of a theme and I worked from there. And, as you say, some synths do have more inspiring sounds than others, whether it be hardware or software ones. Synths without patches I approach in an entirely different way, which I also find inspiring if their user interface is intuitive and immediate, or synths with patches that just happen to be super easy to work with from scratch like the Sub 37, for instance, which I have noodled with on a few occasions in music shops, and also the Korg Monologue XD that I spent a minute or two on earlier this year and immediately discovered interesting sounds that could have formed the basis for a composition had I had one of those at home. If I find making my own patches a bit convoluted on a synth that comes with great patches, I don't mind sticking to what I have and just do some minor adjustments, but if I don't find included patches inspiring, that of course doesn't bode well for trying to find one's own either, even if it is an intuitive user interface. There is of course also a more undefinable thing to do with sound where some synths sound nice to you and others just sound grating or plain boring. I also find it quite frustrating how many synth makers (the ones that can) add reverb to their patches to lush up the sounds which can give you a false impression of the base sound. I like adding my own and so I have been known to run through all the factory patches of some of my soft synths, resaving them without reverb. A good sound should sound good without reverb but often better with some added. Anyway, yes, both user interface and patches can each in their own way inspire musical creativity. I think anyone who says that you shouldn't use patches are being snobbish and also making the first (but surprisingly common) cardinal sin of artistry: presuming that the restrictions you impose on your own work should apply to others.
