In this second video I play more original sounds using both layers of Hydrasynth Deluxe, demonstrating the power and flexibility of two Hydrasynth engines sounding at once.
Featured are a selection of sounds such as pads, ambient, polysynths, epianos, bells and strings. I include also several soundscape patches: Glass mist, 6th dimension and Ripple chimes. I’ve really only scratched the surface here: there’s so much potential in this synth for ambient soundscapes.
* UPDATE: all these sounds are now available to purchase in my Hydrasynth Deluxe Sound Banks volumes 1 & 2. Link to purchase: synthuniverse.sellfy.store
Hydrasynth Deluxe Sound bank vol 1 demo: • ASM Hydrasynth | Delux...
Given that we can layer almost infinite tracks in our DAWs, why do we need a dual layer synth? In my experience there are four main ways of conceiving and creating sounds with two layers, and I’ve included examples of each within this video:
1 - Contrasting sounds. Two distinctive sounds are either played together (e.g. the Harp arp & soother patch) or confined to different zones of the keyboard in split mode (e.g. the Big mono bass + poly split patch). This can be useful for auditioning sound combinations to be layered later in a DAW, or for jamming musical ideas
2 - Composite sounds. Here two distinct sounds are combined to create one single coherent sound (e.g. the Rich bright poly and Staple string patches) where neither single sound stands out too much. This can give more depth and interest than single sounds
3 - Double sounds. Here an identical copy of a sound is made and ‘doubled-up’ with the original (e.g. the Soother and Vocoder choir patches). Then subtle changes are made to each. Detuning, panning, adjustments to rate of LFOs or chorus effects can all increase size, depth and richness of the overall sound
4 - Designer sounds. Here sounds are conceived ‘from the ground up’ utilizing both layers so the finished patch doesn’t sound layered at all (e.g. the 6th dimension patch). This gives much scope, creating sounds with potentially many elements and a lot of movement that sound organic
The effects you hear on the sounds are all internal to Hydrasynth: no external effects were used and no other processing applied other than a small amount of limiting and EQ for mastering to KZbin.
The sounds in this video could also be created on any combination of Hydrasynth engine if you own more than one, such as Hydrasynth, Hydrasynth Desktop and Hydrasynth Explorer. The Deluxe just makes it a bit easier having both engines in one unit.
There was no sponsorship or affiliation to ASM or their products in the creation of this video.
All musical ideas in this video are my own and are copyright to me.

@@synthuniverse As a person who spends a lot of time programming his HSD, I can tell you that just the multi sounds you've included in your two videos will make a great bank to sale. Fewer, better sounds is actually super useful as it lets you get to work playing and composing faster than going through a gazillion new sounds. Great work!
@synthuniverse
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
@@DavidLee07 Many thanks for your comments and feedback! I agree completely that so many modern synths (particularly software synths) are sold with too many existing sounds, as if that's something to strive for. But quality wins over quantity every time in my view! As players and composers we need sounds that will trigger inspiration quickly and that are musical and playable. I'll take on board your comments re the HSD sound banks, although since making those videos I keep creating sounds that I want to share! I do however put them through a fairly rigorous selection process at the end to ensure only the best make the final bank.

A nice bandpass filter and a nice short, round filter envelope. Not sure about the attack env, but I'm pretty sure the Hydrasynth has a more than capable LFO waveform that you can one-shot to emulate the embouchour. I'm thinking from a subtractive synthesis perspective, and I'm sure the Hydrasynth has a dozen better ways of doing it, but it's a start. Actually, thinking about it, there's probably a wave table already there that will get you 80% of the way there! Lol I'd love to play with that polyphonic aftertouch. SOOO MUCH! Edit: and yes, getting it right is bloody difficult. I still haven't got it to my complete satisfaction yet.

Q: Are the bell sounds most like those of a DX-7, a PPG, or a Synclavier? A: Yes. P.S. I got a Hydrasynth Deluxe about a week ago. The fact that it can so proficiently recreate the kind of sounds previously reserved for extraordinary synths like the Synclavier (Glass Mint is a perfect example) and it doesn’t cost as much as a house, blows my tiny little mind!

I read the entire description and did not see the claim that post processing/effects/EQ/compression/... was NOT used. This claim should always be included in a patch audition. It would also be nice to know if recorded audio through USB or used an audio cable to the recorder DAC/ADC conversions used. Sounds like some great designed patches if all HydroSynth.
@synthuniverse
@synthuniverse 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! A bit further down in the description I do state 'No external FX or processing was applied in producing these demos - you are hearing the sounds as they were played from the synth, using only internal Hydrasynth effects'. The audio was straight through jack cables into an audio interface and a Mac - no other equipment used. Hope that helps.

Maybe you need to hear this Live but sound thin to me. Been a Roland Guy since 1984 with dozen+ Synths throughout my journey. Something about the Roland/Curtis chips sets throughout 80's -90's that cannot be matched for sound quality. Even the V-Synth has Warmth and Punch so will need to check this out for myself. Awesome Demo!!!
@synthuniverse
@synthuniverse Жыл бұрын
Many thanks for your feedback and comments! I agree there's something special about the sound of Roland synths from that era. What I like about the Hydrasynth is that it's not trying to be anything else. It has its own sound which layers very well with analog synths and imo can also stand up on its own as well. It's all subjective of course, but what some people describe as 'thin' I would describe more as having an 'edge' which contrasts nicely with other synths. Each synth has its own personality and sweet spots. I love that we have access to so many different timbres to help us create more imaginative music!

Many thanks for your feedback! Yes I agree to evaluate the music potential of any synth it should be heard in a musical context. Having said that, sometimes a good sound on its own can get our imagination working... To me, great synths are flexible enough so that we can mold them to our own styles and taste in music.

For now, I think it's better to hear the Hydrasynth in isolation. These videos are a true demonstration of what it can achieve, and how it sounds, without the support of other instruments. Judging by the amount of undeserved negativity it has received on purist Synth Forums, it's best it stands on its own feet, otherwise it would be accused of "hiding" in a mix. My observation here is that the Hydrasynth sounds awesome without any support. Full credit to the musical genius of @Synth Universe.
