Super happy Asmongold liked the video! I wanted nothing more than to provide a different perspective on the game and explain how a more content-focused player can still enjoy FF14 alongside all it's other qualities. Thanks so much for watching :D

I'm so glad to finally see someone make a video about how yes, there very much is content for people who enjoy challenging themselves in this game. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy some of the more casual aspects of the game too and agree they're a big part of its success, but it was getting somewhat frustrating to see players trying to use that as selling points when talking to people who weren't (much) interested in that, made it seem like they didn't realise different people might have different centres of interest. XIV has content for many different types of players, happy to finally see someone explain that this includes endgame raiders.

Well if we wanna be technical i can argue that everything else that isn't raiding is still content in the game regardless of personal enjoyment and honestly someone out there is bound to enjoy it someway somehow if i wanna be objective so to call only people doing savage and ultimate as "content" focused just seems kinda off to me but i guess it depends on what you view as content to be consumed. so while i dont personally agree with calling a player on that level a more "content" focused player you are still correct about pretty much anything you talked about in the video despite that anyway. I'd just personally call a player like that a high-end raider and thats about it. As long as you play the content you enjoy the most you win at the end of the day. I have friends who exist legitimately only for FFXIVs PVP (even though we all know how the pvp is like) and in the same way there are people that only exist for raiding. If you can fit in with all crowds and learn from them even better because you can experience as much of the game as possible and formulate your own opinions about content and maybe learn and prog along the way.

Its interesting to me because when WoW came out, it WAS the casual MMO that was all about openness and player fun. "Gameplay first" was Blizzard's motto and the game was more accessible than EQ and Ultima and things. Somehow along the way they lost that vision and have cultivated this playerbase and imagery where if you're not willing to work on boring character progression for 8 hours a day you're not good enough to play the game in any meaningful way.
@BleachRush
@BleachRush 3 жыл бұрын
@@Calder90 they missed the mark for Casuals AND hardcore players. Non of these player base are satisfied with game. And that's because blizzard metrics today is just about engagement for the longest time possible for subs. No coincidence the new patch came out very close to the 6-months subs cycle with a new 6-months subs offer/reward. They're too comfortable with this cycle but maybe this time they will feel the hot with alot of players switching to FFXIV

The class swap thing - me and my co-tank last time I used to raid savage. Everytime we stepped out of the door for coffee or to replace a PUG, we'd could just swap what tank class we were on. And sometimes if we needed it because someone had to go for the night - keep the same toons but swap around roles. Granted I did that in WoW too, but it meant keeping a stack of alts by the door, and running them through all the 'other stuff'. In FFXIV, I just have to have the other role geared better than any PUG sitting in queue.
@arcady0
@arcady0 3 жыл бұрын
To add: we weren't just swapping to be stupid - the balance is pretty good so the burden on the team didn't get messed up, and the 'hey lets swap our tank classes' was a great way to avoid burnout without slowing progression. When I swapped what healer I was using in 9.0 Nath, and some of our DPS swapped from melee to ranged or vice versa - each of those set our raid back a week on average because it meant "oh no, I need to hit Torghast and Covenant all over again", but it was that or "guys I'm so burned out by this BS I'm unsubbing" which half the people without alts did...

Yeah you have to memorize a ton of stuff because there is no addon that tells you what happens next. You have to know every tiny bit of mechanic the boss can pull out of his sleeve at any time and react immediately to avoid any dmg taken, while keeping up your own dmg. Memorizing all stuff that could happen during a many minute long fight isnt as easy as one could think. Especially in fights where you have to watch the movment of the boss or what he was saying to know what happens next. You can do an extrem trial and the pattern is 'mechanic 1' then 'mechanic 3' and then 'mechanic 2'. The next time to do the trial you'll get an complete different pattern. So yeah... brain and muscle memory for the win :)

I can confirm that you are indeed a filthy casual. All jokes aside, the biggest difference between FFXIV and WOW raiding is that FFXIV demands precision and WOW demands reaction. The error many WOW players make is that they think that it's easier to be precise when a fight is scripted. What they fail to realize is this is only true when *all 8* players need to be precise. If someone dies, then pretty much the whole raid is forced to react to recover. The problem is the margin for error is so small that this is often not possible. For WOW, you can often save a scuffed run. This is not the case with FF ultimates. The most you can hope for when someone messes up is that you see the next mechanic and get to practice your rotation. In FFXIV, your group can really only be as good as your weakest player. In WOW, a handful of good players can carry the raid and you might even let your weak links die.

Anyone here who studied some kind of game design, know there is an unethical principle of "rewards and punishment", if the player logins every day, you get a reward, if they don't the get a punishment, this what WoW is doing is punish players in a level that creates anxiety, that's why games that let you take your time and are both challenging and relaxing should be praised, me if like final fantasy, there are some content downtime, you can't just not pay the monthly sub and that's it.

You can still create alts and leveling up takes SOOO long the first time in part (not entirely) because you have to do the story. Well on the second character you can just skip most of the cutscenes and quickscroll the text. With how ARR was squished recently and plenty of xp gear from various sources you'll almost always be overleveled so the xp itself is no issue. You can also send stuff like money and gear to your character if you really want to. Massive inventory means you could more or less pregear your character all the way up to max level. In the Armory chest you have like 25 slots for each individual gear slot plus a massive 140 slot inventory. More than enough to prepare for a journey to cap. In 14, it feels a lot more mixed with chats regularly having a fair number of both genders. I don't really care about gender of other players, mind you, but it is interesting how 14 really does have stuff for everyone and I think the game being less competitive-driven and more casual-friendly might have something to do with it. As someone who played WoW since Vanilla and up to WoD, and as someone who knows how leveling in WoW feels compared to FFXIV, I promise you: you will LOVE the story. Yes, there are fetch quests and travel from here to there and back again quests, every RPG has that. And yet, you do way less quests to reach max level compared to WoW and actually get to enjoy the path leading there and to the endgame content. Once you will be there, you will have your "WoW feeling" back, minus the tedious grind for dailies and world stuff just to be "meta". Plus, YOU are the star of the game, not some peon in service for the Alliance/Horde and their respective Avengers team. See it as playing something like Mass Effect or Skyrim, but with an MMO in the background. Yes, the savage and ultimate raids are a real treat compared to WoW stuff, even mythic. You can't just enter with a raid composed of fire mages and rush through in minutes. I repeat this over & over again, we don't need system to keep players playing the game or active. Just make classes fun & less gatekeeping for progress. WoW is a game that's been going on for decades, everyone has alts... even most famous players in wow on specific classes have alts. Just let people play alts, make alts fun & let them play. Stop making system that you'd see in mobile games with game pass or systems based on mobile game progressions, those systems are scuffed version based on mmo progression, gear upgrades, game pass or systems that are similar are influenced by mmo talents/level progression. Why add scuffed systems when you had the original full version? It's like having the good full meal but then they add some scuffed shit that ruins the whole taste of the menu.

@Urazz The thing is, I play mobile games & I see these system of growth or development in mobile games. Sadly, mobile games use systems that are scuffed copies from MMOs, I can give examples but my point is they're using a scuffed mobile game system in a mmo which had a full course experience, instead of just a snack. True systems can be also good but reality is that the systems themselves, the progress is time gated in a similar way to mobile games. Like daily achievements, missions & so on to progress yourself through a mobile game or wow. Systems would not be bad if they did not implement them the way they are structured in mobile games.

It also make me enjoy other content too when I try to maximize damage normal content. Nowadays, even I join new fc, people in my fc still drag people to Savage to have fun together and laugh when we fail. Some continue doing Savage, some don't go further than clearing first boss but that's okay. If you want to dip in to Savage maybe set your goal to first boss, first boss drop like half of your gear slot for this reason.

Xiv raiding bar is super low unless you try the super HC aka clear the tier week1 or month1. EX trail is normally quite easy and is a good intro to raiding. If you have a group where ppl raided before you can normally go in blind and clear in two lockouts. Each tier has 4 fights. The 1st is normally debatably same difficulty as EX. And difficulty increase gradually. 3rd fight has a dps jump where most ppl/party finder will first encounter a door the first month. It’s something you can gear over tho. Then the last fight is where the fun lives XD so try it out if you can find a group. Def worth it. I run a casual static rn. It’s something I used to learn other roles after I cleared the tier on my main to help new ppl getting into raid.

The so called "dailies" take up to 3 hours to complete, because you need to win battles to complete them. When you are on a loosing streak it is such a drag to do the dailies. When you don't do the dailies you won't get the best ships. In the end i stopped playing. Because after grinding for a whole year for a certain ship it got nerfed into the ground. This killed all motivation.

For level sync, a LOT of old content does become easier with better gear. Especially old dungeons and the like, and a lot of old Ex-Trials. Ultimates and Savage stuff, while better gear might make a minute difference, won't really be impacted by that because the fights are more about the mechanics than the numbers. They've also introduced Unreal fights where they take old Ex-Trial fights and scale them up with some mechanics to the highest level, making them more challenging than if they were synced.
@Crawver
@Crawver 3 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. A lot of the level sync will sync you down to item levels of that expension, but expansions have a lot of variance with their item levels. So for example, doing ravana item synced, you will be playing at item level 270. Hugely overgeared. However, ultimates lock you in to the specific item level of their release. Also, absolutely the item level does make a huge difference. I was redoing some titania last week, having not touched her since 5.0. We were clearing her in 5 minutes, when she's meant to be a 9 and a half minute fight.

I'm not sure if anyone made note of this. I don't know if this mechanic works in Ultimate because I'm not part of the less than 1% that does that content, but I know older Savage and Extreme content have what's called the Echo buff. After lasting so long against a boss and then wiping, you gain the Echo which buffs stats, making it easier to defeat that boss, and the buff stacks multiple times depending on how many solid attempts you make on it. However, if you want that added challenge on top of being iLvl synced, you can also physically click off the buff so progression does not get easier the more attempts you make on the boss. This is another fun little features that adds fun to the raid experience.
@eryes1218
@eryes1218 3 жыл бұрын
Ultimates have no echo buff, but the way gear scaling works mean that with current gear, food and relic weapons, your stats are way higher than they were on release, so you still kinda outgear them and have an easier DPS/mitigation check.
@prenti1211
@prenti1211 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's true. However, you can further mitigate that scaling by wearing gear according to the content you're doing, if you want to do that to begin with. And even if not, even with how scaling works with current gear, there's still plenty of challenge to be had either way. It's not perfect, but it can still make it fun.

but most people who actually experienced both raids in FF XIV and WoW, FF XIV raiding is what they call dance fight, every mechanics will have a programmed thing to do, you don't have to solve anything, you don't have to do a lot of adjustments between pull, you just need to go where to go and when to go to that position, when to use your knockback resists etc WoW (at least mythic raiding) is mostly about solving each fight, raid leaders will have to make calls that will affect the fights, there are a lot of risky calls that can be made and comp adjustment can be tailored to make fight harder or easier. The strat for the world first clears might not apply to your group because of different comp and you have to figure out workarounds for this. You have to make adjustments in between pull and during the pull, like for example, our tank might need a breather during the Council fight while kiting (because a certain mob hits so hard that cant be facetanked) and a hunter or dps warrior taunted the mob and leap away to kite, giving space for the tank to taunt it back after the space has been created. This kind of decision making is what I enjoy most in WoW.

@@Deceitt I never said the opposite : noone will say FF14 fights aren't "dance" fights. And there's no problem with that. There are exceptions to this in every fight tho with certain randomness to it (Midgarsormr in O10s, or E10s come first to mind : you can't do the same thing each and every time or you die, later fights also have that stuff, but it's the most visible in those two). But what I meant was that UwU and TEA blind progression is incredibly cryptic. If you don't pay attention to buffs (that might not even appear) or even to story elements of the original raids, you will miss vital parts of the strat that will wipe you later on in the fight. Even non-cryptic stuff still sometimes has loads of stuff that you need to deal differently with : Wormhole phase in TEA needs you to literally learn what each and every possibility is else you might die to it and wipe. Basically that's mostly a design philosophy difference. And if you don't like it, well... sorry for you ?

As someone whose done both casual PVE content and a large part of the raiding content in 14, yeah, a lot of the story content is piss easy in retrospect. Most story content is designed in a way where you cant lose. This does change drastically with the raid content. Alliance raid is hard mainly cause one team either sucks or are actively trying to wipe the raid some times. Savage content that requires a static to complete or an FC are another ball park altogether. Very rarely will party finder guarantee a streak of clears, sometimes the party is designed in a way to screw you out of loot. Personally would recommend doing such content with an FC, only issue is due to Asmons popularity/notoriety he may have a few bad experiences in trying. Wish best of luck.
