Since you asked - I'm from the UK and I had never heard that tarot is derived from a card game, let alone that it's still played! It'd be fascinating if you did a video on the game, I'd love to hear more about it.

Our standard 52 had to come from somewhere... It has it's roots in tarot.

Playing cards probably originated in China and are much older than tarot. The first documented tarot cards were seen in wealthy Italian family homes and used to play tarocchi. So the suits of tarot are based on playing cards, not the other way around.
@theseventysevenmiles Жыл бұрын
Naipes in Spanish came from the word deputy in Arabic. Around the 1300's the Mamluk Deck from Egypt made its way into Europe and became very popular. The Tarot and subsequent playing decks were then westernized over time into court decks with face cards as the Mamluk deck did not contain face cards. The tarot and the court decks then split and mostly tarot cards went one way and the court decks went another eventually becoming western playing decks. Cards of all kinds in Europe became a "problem" and in various places bans were enacted. They were also wildly popular with every strata and demographic of medieval Europe. I believe the oldest full playing decks are housed at the Met Cloisters and at a museum in Vienna. Doing this all from memory because I am a fan of Caravaggio and he painted The Cards Sharps in the mid 1590's and I did a deep dive on the history of cards a few years ago. You can see his painting of The Card Sharps in Fort Worth, TX.

Kunsthistorisches is where a few of the oldest playing decks are housed. The Court of the Hunt deck is one of them if I recall correctly. Great video. Thank you.

@@MelangeASMR Oh wow. Thanks for putting up with all that. I will endeavor to purchase a deck or two myself. It appears card history started in China then to Persia and on into Europe. I got pretty excited when I thought I had something to add, incoherent as it was. Thank you for carving out a low key peaceful area for so many to gather and share.

They might be a bit tricky to find. All three are from Piatnik, a Vienna-based company - Ambraser Hofjagspiel, Ambraser Hofämterspiel and the Flemish Hunting Deck from the Met - and it looks like they were limited editions released in the 70s and 90s respectively. I found a second-hand one at a decent range, but otherwise the prices can be a bit steep. Unfortunately they only ship to Central Europe 😬 www.piatnik.com/en/historicalcards/ambraser www.piatnik.com/en/historicalcards/ambraser-jagd www.piatnik.com/en/historicalcards/flemish-hunting-card-game Thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate it and honestly, I'm just super happy that the comment sections look the way they do, with everyone being respectful and sharing interesting bits and pieces. It's sad that it feels like an outlier online these days.

I have been working with tarot cards for a few years now and it's always refreshing to rekindle the basic meanings without interpretation to people, since I usually give readings to friends when we're all hit by that insomnia demon. My only qualm about them is how in most of the cards everyone is nude. Just a personal preference but I like them /not nude./
@MrFredstt Жыл бұрын
I personally don't mind the nudity. You said you do readings so are you a legit diviner (if that's not the official name for a tarot practitioner then my apologies I'm not well versed) and if you are where did you learn how to accurately do it?

Yeah there are a lot of different styles. Like "aggressive" ASMR doesn't really do anything for me either other than make me nervous haha, but different stroke for different folks. I think one of the issues these days is that we're so used to algorithms automatically presenting us with just the right kind of content, that there's little tagging or community organising anymore. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video :)

Another wonderful video. For the longest time I thought the alchemical tarot came long before the playing cards and gambling accessories, but it's the other way around as you point out. One sort of nitpicky thing is that you can see quite a bit of alchemy in the surviving tarot decks that were the products of very wealthy patrons in the late Renaissance, mostly the Dukes of Milan but there were others.

Great choice of deck especially getting the larger size for the most easily accessible to learn Rider-Waite. Lots of resources out there for Rider-Waite to more rapidly learn tarot. So relaxing to hear you present them - beautiful. So much feeds into tarot and in my view it is very ancient to possibly being primordial for human learning. Interesting for me is your connection with the Queen of Wands. I find connections with the cards changes and evolves over time depending upon what is happening. Glad you have already begun to connect with specific energies. Would love some spreads later on as you become more familiar with the cards. There are 3 decks in the overall 78 cards - Majors, Minors and Royals. Great you have connected up with friends to discuss aspects of the cards. My first tarot learning book beyond the actual first deck I got was Holistic Tarot by Benebell Wen. This has comprehensive information for a new learner that is largely focussed on the Rider-Waite. - lots of spreads. I still use it from time to time. There are many others to choose form and no doubt you will find what connects with you. Enjoy the journey - gateway into the western magical tradition unfolds. ♥🙏

This was a lovely video. I especially like the end note abt how Tarot can be used more as a meditative & reflective practice rather than strictly divinatory. There's a reason Jung would bring a Tarot deck (particularly, iirc, the Major Arcana) & pull cards to discuss them w/ patients. That therapeutic practice is still the root of modern therapeutic models like psychodynamic therapy. Simply talking through things & gaining internal & external insight can help us process our thoughts & emotions in a powerful way, but the Tarot simply provides a lens for understanding what was already inside oneself. Personally, I've def had readings that I "threw out" bc the cards were simply not resonant or applicable to my situation. Ales gutes! Tschuss! ^^
