Today we're looking at a bit of a mysterious aspect of ancient history: the Scythians. I've come across the name quite often, but always in the margins or as a side-note and it made me curious to find out more about this civilization of Eastern Europe during the Hellenistic period. I hope you find this relaxing and interesting, and if at some point, you're wondering whether you should drift off to sleep rather than keep listening: absolutely, go to sleep 💖💖
The books I used are:
Putzger Historischer Weltatlas, Kartenedition.
Gold aus Kiew, 170 Meisterwerke aus der Schatzkammer der Ukraine, Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. (depicting pieces from the Ukrainian Treasures Museum)
Here's some of the info plus an English translation of the account of Herodotus:
www.penn.museu...
www.arcus-atla...
The British Museum had an exhibition a few years ago in the Scythians where I found the info on drinking, getting high, and tattoos:
www.britishmus...
If you'd like to listen to more in-depth info:
• The Scythians: Nomad W...
And only mentioning the Scythians in passing but going into great depth on the history of Ukraine - incl. a lesson on the Kyivan Rus and the Viking Age - there's this Yale lecture series with Timothy Snyder:

Hi again! Ever since reading years ago that Scythian women were found buried with their bows in many of their kurgans/dolmens, I have been fascinated with the role of women in ancient and medieval warfare. The Scythians are one of the most fascinating people in the ancient world. I'm so glad you took this as a topic. You have become one of my favorite ASMR creators and I hope you keep making videos! Thank you again!!

Exploring ancient history with the relaxing voice of Melanges' ASMR is the best way by far. Lovely book yet again. The Scythians are one of the most mysterious ancient people. Their Griffin is a really interesting symbol for me. Not sure how it fits in with their culture but it seems to represent their strength. Something about predation. Griffin symbolism has a widespread distribution throughout the world and by association reveal a powerful Scythian legacy wherever they show up. Seems to have the strongest links with ancient Ireland. The spiral rings symbolized on the gold amulet necklace look to me to be in three's to somewhat resemble the ancient Irish triskelion symbol. Looking at their facial features they seem far more western origin than eastern. Red heads buried in the kurgans adds a lot of weight to very early western origins. Fascinating, enjoyable, relaxing. Another Melange classic🙂

Scythian is not an ethnicity, it's a Greek umbrella term for all the pastoral nomads living north and north east of Black sea. Griffons is again attributed to Scythians by Greeks (they had so called animal-style art, hybrids are rare). If you want to know who almost totaly replaced and assimilated local Irish and British population and brought Indo-European languages look no farther then Yamnaya culture (R1 DNA haplogroup) - also from Pontic steppe between Black and Caspian sea. Also notice river named Don (and other D-N rivers) flowing into the Black Sea - there is 4 rivers with that name in England and 1 in Scotland and 1 in France

But those gold pieces aren't "Scythian". They were made by Black Sea Greek colonists at a Greek settlement called Solocah. "Scythian" is a Greek linguistic reference to a 'Scythe', the farming tool used by the local wheat farmers the Greeks traded with..

Fascinating! And that necklace (collar?) was gorgeous indeed. @_@ I was surprised by the accuracy of the lions; when Medieval Europe drew lions, it tended to be pretty obvious that they'd never seen one, but whoever sculpted these obviously had a very good idea of what the real thing looked like... Any idea if lions ever actually lived as far north as the Scythians did? Or did some of the Scythians do some really extensive traveling down past the Mediterranean?
@MsRedjay
@MsRedjay Жыл бұрын
Really interesting, I had to look it up... apparently lion populations once extended from Africa to India. Recent archaeological research has found evidence of wild lions living in SE Europe until around 300 BC, and until as late as the 10th century in the Caucasus region.

As you said, Scythians might not have had one "identity". It is indeed a large umbrella term for many related cultures from Ukraine to Central Asia. If you would like to continue along these lines into Siberia, it's worth taking a look at the Asian Scythian burial mounds in Pazyryk and Issyk. Another interesting bit of Ukrainian history is that after the Scythians, one of the peoples migrating in were the Goths. So there is a link between this same region and Germanic cultures, and even legends like the Nibelungenlied and the Edda.

Some unique archaeological parallels between Hungarians and Scythians: a lily-horned deer in Hungarian folk art and an Asian Scythian tattoo. A Scythian golden deer discovered in Hungary depicts an antlered deer burning with fire. The legend of the miraculous burning horned stag of the Hungarian King St. Lazlo in the 14th century Hungarian Pictorial Chronicle. Tree of Life and stag together in Hungarian folk art and in a Sarmatian headdress. The two-headed Turul (mythical eagle) in the Asian Scythian and the Hungarian "Séchi" family coat of arms, and the same in the Hungarian Reformed coffered ceilings.
