This meditation includes a Tonglen meditation and Metta prayers. Tonglen is a Tibetan word for “giving and taking” and comes from the Tibetan buddhist tradition. Metta is a loving kindness practice found in many buddhist traditions. In a Tonglen practice, we visualize taking in the pain of others with every in-breath and sending out light to them on the out-breath. Tonglen can be done for those who are ill, those who are dying or have died, or those who are in pain of any kind. This is a practice that I adopt when my heart is heavy and I feel helpless in my situation to aid those who are suffering. I also practice to face my aversion to the pain of others. That is - instead of wanting things to be different, the practice is about embracing the pain and extending compassion to the experience of suffering itself.
