I grew up just an hour from the Dutch-German border in Germany so it was very interesting to hear about the similarities and differences between our cultures. Great video, dank je wel! We really love going to Zeeland. It's so chill there and the beaches are gorgeous and never crowded. Middelburg is a very picturesque town.

Dear Fleur, I follow you since you started the channel if I remember correctly and you have no idea how this video in particular warmed up my heart. I’m italian but I just came back from an exchange year there in the Netherlands. When I started following you I was still there and listening to you knowing you were something near (yes, small country) was very nice in some way. But this video brought up so many memories…from school (I had to do gymnasium so I know how wiskunde B can mess up with your brain) to the commercials on the bike seats. I once had to do it to make some money and it was bloody cold, but I remember how happy i felt also because of how surreal it felt. I could talk just about how much I miss biking around the city for hours… I remember how Sinterklaas healed my inner child and how Christmas felt like Christmas again. I just want you to know I love your culture and as an Italian person it gave me so much! I keep following you (also your dutch videos because I understand them kinda, hehe) and I genuinely hope you’re okay. You’re doing amazing here in your little corner, for all of us! ❤ Best wishes, Sofia

There's an expression in Italian "dolce far niente" and it means "the sweetness of nothing." It's reserved for those times when you have no responsibilities and there's nothing you have to get done for the remainder of the day (often because businesses and stores are closed, your work is closed, etc...). When you talked about "niksen," that Italian expression came to mind.

Your English is amazing, please don’t stress about it. If you’re looking for a word don’t hesitate to ask anyone because your fluency is seamless. I have novice/intermediate experience with Dutch culture (my son is actually half Dutch): 1) your English is far better than my AND his Dutch & 2) I appreciate your honesty and awareness about Black Pete, it’s progress to question things it’s not denial of your culture

German person here! I don't know about Drake & Josh specifically but I've never watched a movie/series here in Germany where they kept the English and just put the German dubbing on top - however, our dubbing can be pretty bad, I'll admit that xD I'm loving the video so far, it's really interesting! ❤ Edit: wow I didn't know college in the Netherlands was so expensive! Here, it's "only" between 100-400€ per semester (private colleges are more expensive of course)

Fellow Dutchie here, so so so glad I found you on the internet! Really appreciate the way you explained the schooling system and the mention that POC are more likely to be put into lower levels of education. I also agree with you that the tier ranking of intelligence, at such a young age especially, is such a short-sighted system. Also upon your recommendation, I should be a tourist in my own country and go fierljeppen some time, definitely something that is very 'ver van mijn bed' considering I'm from the Randstad area and am now living in Maastricht.

Your English is amazingly good-million times better than my Dutch and happy there are similarities with Deutsch. I’ve only been to the Netherlands twice but enjoyed it very much and loved the Dutch people. There was a Ted Lasso episode where the owner of the team was walking around and getting yelled at-I too made the mistake of walking in the bike lane but the third person stopped me and explained it to me.

I appreciate you being honest about the problems with racism and ignorance in your country. Too many Europeans pretend like it’s a non-issue and say the US is the only racist country. Meanwhile, you would be instantly fired if someone found a photo of you in blackface here. It bothers me that Europeans don’t usually talk about these things openly.

And putting chocolate sugar sprinkles on buttered bread? Hagelslag should be a crime 😂 same as dutch and german "volksmuziek" 🙃🙉🤡 Regarding the racism: We have the same thing here with e.g. the "Negerkuss" (this treat used to be called that way but it was officially changed to "Schokokuss", luckily!). Especially older people who grew up with that racist term still want to call it that way and are upset about being corrected. "It's not racist, everyone knows it is not supossed to be 🫣🫣🫣".

I could totally see people I knew from school being up to doing that sort of thing if they were exposed to probably only a handful of black people in their entire lives. Luckily I live in the US and it's normal to see black people here, so that obviously would never happen here. One thing that really annoys me about international media, particularly out of Europe, is how Americans are so often portrayed as being terribly racist and ignorant. Many people are, it's true. It's just as much a generational issue here as it is anywhere else. But I would venture to guess that in terms of total population percentage, it's vastly lower here than pretty much anywhere else in the world.

The schwarte Piet was originally two black, fire-scorched demons. The humanization to PoCs happens in the time of colonization in the 19th century. Similar applies to the schwarze Peter and schwarzer Piet in Germany. While schwarzer Piet is the German version, the schwarzer Peter was a white-skin criminal who named his version of the child game "schwarzer Peter". So, tradition can obviously be changed. It was done in the past with these traditions to meet everyday racism. So, why shouldn't it be possible to change these traditions again? Back to the roots. Change schwarte Piet to a burned demon instead of embracing picturing of PoCs. Nobody can claim racism if you dress obviously like a demon.
