The English Civil War and what followed with James II, William and Mary, and the Glorious Revolution, were probably some of the most influential points of our history here in the UK for the modern political set up. Yet you very rarely hear of it in British schools. It's strange. I know that we try and pretend here in the UK that we've had a pretty unchanged constitutional process since 1066, but we certainly haven't, and I wish they taught it more to people. Our political development is important on so many levels as it influenced half of the world and its institutions. Even the States has a lot of English flavour in its political institutions if you look closely.

It's much more well known here in Ireland, but perhaps in a less positive light 😂

We learnt loads about that back when I was at school (left in 2017)

@harrylaw8230 I left school a fair few years before 2017. Michael Gove completely changed the curriculum to encompass more British History, and for it to be taught in a linear order. 20 and 30 years ago history was always focused on the world wars, Romans, vikings, Tudors... that was about it.

William's subjugation of Ireland and the desperation to steer clear of Catholic monarchs are LIKELY the primary reasons those histories get glossed over like they do.

5:55 fun fact: there is still a sizable portion of Hungarian Calvinists in parts of Hungary as well as Transylvania in Romania. The current PM of Hungary is a Calvinist, though his wife and children are Roman Catholics

What you said you studied of British history in the US is the same experience for me growing up in the UK! Vikings, Battle of Hastings, Henry VIII, Elizabeth then straight to Victorians and the World Wars. The 17th century is so interesting and dramatic but it’s not taught about in school and all I knew about it as a kid was from reading Horrible Histories books 😅 now I’ve got into it as an adult and can’t get enough.

Disendows means to cease funding. The Churches were given an endowment… a sum of money or good, usually both. This means to take that away.

At 26:07 the American pronunciation is also how we say it and I can’t hear the difference in the two ways you are saying it! I love this video btw - you talking about the Civil War is amazing to me 😂

To disendow is to defund or withhold an endowment from someone or some group.

This weekend I was in New Braunfels Tx at a concert. I saw someone that looked a lot like you. Lucky the person didn’t notice I was weirdly starring at them for a moment 😂.

12:21 Now, I have this particular historical atlas and what really irks me is the neglectful treatment of the Thirty Years' War. Why this large image and not a proper map like one would expect in a historical atlas on this large continental conflict?
