Hello! It's finally time to explore some Ottoman history. Specifically, let's look at the border between the Habsburg and the Ottoman empire, from the Aegaen to the Black sea, how it shifted over time and how the Habsburg strategy of fortification has shaped its population until today.

As a Turk, the word "Rumelia" (in Turkish it's Rumeli) comes from two words: 'Rum' and 'ili'. Today the word 'Rum' stands for Greek people who lives in Anatolia. But the most correct term is 'People who lives in Rome'. Because when we first met with Byzantines we heard they call themselves Roman so we called them Roman. In old Turkish common use of the word 'ili' means 'Land of ...'. So when you combine these two words you get 'The land of the Romans'.

Going to share my favourite Ottoman fact: the name "Istanbul" is believed to be a corruption of a Greek phrase meaning "to the city" which is how Constantinople was sign-posted. The Ottomans just decided that was the name of the city.

I love these kind of infos. Reminds me of how my country got its name: “The name “Canada” likely comes from the Huron-Iroquois word “kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement.” In 1535, two Aboriginal youths told French explorer Jacques Cartier about the route to kanata; they were actually referring to the village of Stadacona, the site of the present-day City of Québec. For lack of another name, Cartier used the word “Canada” to describe not only the village, but the entire area controlled by its chief, Donnacona.” I’m sure these kind of misunderstandings happened more often than not 😉

Fun fact, coffee was introduced to Europe by the Ottomans. After the unsuccessful siege of Vienna the Ottoman army left sacks of coffee beans behind and that’s how the coffee was brought to europe.

But that reminds me, there is a fantastic program called Mit Offenen Karten or Le Dessous des Cartes on Arte that would be perfect for that. There is a point which you didn't know, in the area you see in the map part of persia, people speak in diffrent languages, hebrew, turkish, kurdish, arabic. In ottman empire too in borders ppl speaking various languages. In a duration persia and ottman both were turk but their official relegion were diffrent, diffrent group of turks. The persia kept farsi as official language. Many intresting things happened between these two countries

@@MelangeASMR What you said in the video is exactly right. The Roman heritage survived. There's a story where when in WW1 parts of the Greek speaking ottoman empire was occupied by British soldiers, one asked "Are you Greeks or Turks" "We're Romani" was the answer. The Byzantine culture survived very long, one of the reasons being that the Ottoman Empire wasn't cultural imperialistic like European colonial powers.

Great content! Ρωμιοι/"romji" (and not Ρωμαίοι/"Romei"/Romans) is what Greeks called themselves within the Byzantine empire . The popular belief within the empire was that they were the "trve" Roman empire. However, this is also what they called themselves some 400 years later when they revolted against the Ottomans in the 1800s, as well as the early 1900s. Nothing to do with Romania or the Romani peoples though, who also decided to call themselves that for similar reasons (empire collapsed) later.

Thank You Melange - really so very interesting and always mesmerizingly relaxing. So nice to be regularly relaxed and informed on such interesting regions of the world. This region such a strategic part of the world from prehistory right throughout conventional history and into today. Where east meets west. Amazing the Ottomans were able to dominate such a huge slice of what were the earlier Parthian/Persian/Sassanid Empires that Rome was never able to really subdue. To be held back from further encroachment into Europe by Austria and Hungary was really highly significant. Things would have been very different in Europe as a whole if these Ottomans managed to penetrate through that region. Very glad they didn't. Look forward to more on all of this next week. 🌸😉
