George is wasting the opportunity to make a book (series) about eastern Essos.
@MrJH1015 жыл бұрын
@6dig-S 61 I think it’s pretty obvious that George wants to write more about this whole world besides just what’s going on in ASOIAF, but he knows he has to finish the main storyline first before he can explore the rest. Hell, he’s already planning to do several more Dunk and Egg stories, in which they keep traveling around the world as _Hedge Knight_ & _Squire_ and then when they’re _Kingsguard_ & _King._ I’m sure that at least one of their adventures will bring them over to Essos and perhaps even closer to this side of the world.

@croisaor23089 жыл бұрын
Probably not. The history of the world is written from the point of view of Westeros and what they know in their time period. The further east you go the less they know. Sothoryos I believe is based off Sub-Saharan Africa and much like in our own world of Feudal Western Europe (from which Westeros is based), they knew nothing about these lands at the time.

I know where Old Valyria is located geographically, but from all accounts is an uninhabited ruin, save from some "lost souls" (like the stone men), so I don't suppose one could call it a port city, or even an "almost port" city. At least that's what I think.

Yeah, here's the thing about that: Martin drew inspiration from JRR Tolkien in creating a world instead of a story. But the difference was that Tolkien was writing mythology, and Martin was writing history. And so, pretty much all that happens in A Song of Ice and Fire is a beat by beat replication of actual history, made more interesting by dragons and magic. And that's important because Martin has focused most of his energy on Westoros (Europe/Western World) because that's what the story was going to be about. The history of Europe. The rest of the world is painted from the perspective of Westoros. We aren't actually told what happens in Essos (Asia/Russia/Eastern World), we're just told what the people of Westeros are told happens in Essos. Most of the information we have about Essos and Sothoryos (Northern Africa/Middle East/Congo/South) and Ulthos (Other land) and the scattered Islands of the Known World are from books like "The World of Ice and Fire" which are just textbooks about what the people of Westeros know about the rest of the world. It's just there because Martin thought it would be fun for the people who want a world, not just a story. And it was easy because he could just copy world history. The Bone Mountains are like the Ural Mountains. Mossovy is like Russia (Muscovy, Kievan Rus) The Dothraki are the Many, Many "Horse People" (Mongols, Huns, Xiongnu, Souix, Aryan, Tar Tar) that have been the bane of Asian Empires since forever. Yi Ti is China, the Jhogwin are tribes in Southeast Asia (Viet Nam, Philippines, Thailand)/ maybe Oceanian Tribes (Papua new Guinea, Australia, New Zealand), the Islands such as the Leng and Marahai are South Asia (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc.) and the Qaathi people are the original Proto-cities such as Catal Huyak or Jericho. The Ghiscari, and Valerian Empires are the original empires of Sumer and Akkad (Sumeria and Akkadia)/ or Possibly Babylonian, Egyptian, Hittite, Phonecian, or other Mesopotamian empires, and The Sarnori are probably the city-states of The Aegean Civilizations. And then there are works of complete fiction, such as The Rhoynar, The Andals, The Lothari, The Ibben, the Ifequevron, The Thousand Islands, The entirety of what's left of Eastern Essos ( the deserts, Asshai, The Shadowlands) and Ulthos. This was all built for those who like to study history and geography. For the type who might watch CivilizationEx, for instance. It was not built for the purposes of story. It's just information on the past and the cultures of these people. They were never meant to mingle with the stories, because in actual history, Europe and the rest of the world (at the time that this show takes place in) had very little to do with one another. And I know that knowing the customs and traditions of these places and peoples may make you want to see them in story form, it makes me want that very badly, too, especially because of the crazy political history of Asia, but that's probably not going to happen. And besides, George RR Martin already seems thrilled about the fact that he's going to talk more about one mythical thing he's made up (The Others and The Land of Always Winter) already in the Winds of Winter, because he kept it a part of lore for a reason and now we're going to see it in story. Which shows he doesn't seem too focused outside of Westeros.
@revanruler64047 жыл бұрын
pretty sure the andals are supposed to be resemble the normans or the anglo-saxons
@01Sunshine2347 жыл бұрын
Revan Ruler well, yeah, it does seem that way, yes. The Rhoynar (and probably the Cymmerians, the Gipps, the Zoqora) are probably also not complete works of fiction, but rather based off of some other historical civilizations. Oh, And I forgot to mention the Hairy Men, which may have been neanderthals, the Fisher Queens who are probably completely fictional, and the Great Empire of the Dawn, which may be the Xia dynasty.

Would it be possible that the Grey Wastes and the Lands of Always Winter are one in the same? It may sound odd, but It isn't an unfounded idea. Yi Ti and Asshai have the same mythos as Westeros regarding the Others including the creation of momentous fortifications such as the Wall and the Five Forts. An explanation may be that the legend simply originated in the east and spread west, yet we know that the Others did indeed attack Westeros and still do. If the legend of Azur Ahai originated in the far-east then why does it so perfectly fit into what we have been witnessing at the wall? Quaithe was quite cryptic when she spoke to Daenerys, but she seemed to have been pushing her quite hard to go east. I think most of us would assume she may mean Asshai, but perhaps she meant that she could physically go east to reach Westeros . Circumvent the globe, passing under the shadowlands "the shadow" or alternatively, fight in the east against the arrival of the Others from the Grey Waste and push them back beyond the polar regions until she reaches the wall. There is another bit that may point to an oceanic trade between Essos and Westros, more specifically Yi Ti, Asshai, and the Iron Isles. The black stone-like material found throughout the regions yet these places are literally the most distant two points in the known world. If trade for the black stone did occur from a common source, would it then make sense that the rest of Essos and Westros would be littered with examples? The only explanation, if they are indeed the same stone, is that the Ironborn and Asshai/YiTi used to trade with each-other across the round globe's sea that separate the two continents.

The black stone fallen from the sky is such an interesting detail to me. It makes me think, what about the red comet we see in A Song of Ice & Fire's present? The return of magic to the world has often been attributed to the return of dragons, but what if that's not the case? What if the proximity of the comet to the world allowed magic to return and magic (blood magic) brought back the dragons? What if this reawakening of magic by the comet also reawakened the ice magic of the walkers and for that reason meant their return? What if the first time the white walkers came, during the long night, was because another comet or asteroid had fallen to earth and awakened magic for the first time? This is all just speculation, of course.

If you're looking for a series on Yi Ti (which will never happen in the West for obvious reasons), NiF is the only production that will ever come close. It's known as the "Game of Thrones of China" for a damn good reason. I would even argue that it has an even smarter and intriguing plot (albeit less gory and sexual... by a million miles) than GoT. I asked Gemini AI to tell me about Yi Ti but like Tywin Lannister (pasted) : "Yi Ti, you say? A gilded cage, that's what it is. A land of excess and decadence. They bask in their opulence, these so-called emperors, while their people toil in the fields. Gold and spice, that's all they care for. A thousand petty princes squabbling over scraps, while the empire rots from within. They have their so-called 'god-emperor', a puppet dancing on strings of superstition. A weak and foolish land, ripe for the taking, if only it were closer."

King in Yellow refers to Yellow Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang Di, aka, the emperor who unified China under the Qin Dynasty and buried in the tomb surrounded by the terra cotta warriors.

This is so gratifying lol. GRRM made sure to make connections so east asian history. I hope one day this makes it on the show.

Maybe Jorah Mormont will travel around the east to find a cure for his greyscale, but I doubt they'll show this as it's not important enough to the overall story.

The golden skull is a reference to the Bulgarian Khan Krum when he turned the ERE Emperor Nikephoros' skull into a drinking cup.

So is the grey waste freezing cold or maybe white walkers don't necessarily thrive in cold climates? If the planet is round and the grey waste somehow eventually connects with the lands of always winter it looks like the grey waste is not a cold region at all its on the equator. Someone needs to sort out the science of ice and fire.
@aoigenei8 жыл бұрын
+Cael McDiarmid Nah the grey waste isn't on the equator, I'd say Summer Isles and Sothoryos are on the Equator since they have jungles and tropical climates. Also I read somewhere that the grey waste is cold which is logical since it's north of Essos. Think of it like Manchuria or maybe Siberia.
@caelmcdiarmid18748 жыл бұрын
Huang Deh Ok but its parallel to the dothraki sea and dorne-riverlands last i looked at a map. This longitude is otherwise quite warm, it would not make sense that the grey waste is known to be cold, maybe the northernmost part but not as a whole. True i agree the world probably goes much further south and sothroyos is probably equator region.

I think George might have gotten Yi Ti and its characteristics from the "Water Margin." If he did then he really is an incredible writer. Borrowing from Chinese literature to write Western fiction is no small task.

So what is the relation of Yi Ti's Azor Ahai with the one who defeated the white walkers in Westeros? Are they the same guy? One is a rencarnation of the other? Are they different interpretations of the same story?
@thomasritchhart7038 жыл бұрын
In Westeros its said that the others were defeated by the last hero, there is no mention of Azor Ahai in westeros traditions. The last hero was a first man who went looking for the children of the forest for help, with their help and a first man army they defeated the others and ended the Long night, according to traditions at least.
@thomasritchhart7038 жыл бұрын
I believe that they are two different hero who both waged war on the others/white walkers on their own home continents.

in which book GRRM mention yi-ti?
@TheFiresloth7 жыл бұрын
It's frequently evoked by characters (in AGOT, Daenerys saw some merchants in the market of Vaes Dothrak), but most of it from World of Ice and Fire.

A song of Ice and Fire is obviously a merge between the history of the british isles and europe as a whole. While Westeros is obviously shaped after the british isles, including features like Hadrians Wall (the Wall), the Britons (First Men), the Andal Invasion (Angles, Saxons, Jutes, ... invading Brittain), bringing a new faith and driving the First Men/Britons back. The Ironborn are clearly based on the nordic tribes of scandinavia, given their culture and sea faring/raiding. Harrens shortlived empire represents the Danelaw. Other aspects like Aegons conquest are also clearly the equivalent of Williams conquest of england, they even share the title The conquerer. The overall struggle around the Iron Throne is also based off the War of the Roses, with the houses representing englands royal families. Apart from the plot and the geography much is also based on the whole of europe or even beyond. Dorne is Spain, the free cities are Greek city states/phonician cities. The Dothraki are the huns, slavers bay is egypt (slaves/pyramids), ghiscari empire is persia, the summer isles are sub saharan africa, valyria is the Roman empire, ...

CivilizationEx wow thanks for answering but how they get to another side of the world? the Wall (Westeros) and Yi Ti are opposite end of the planet.
@CivilizationEx9 жыл бұрын
Sophia Wilson We don't know for sure, but there is a theory that the far North (White Walker Lands) is massive and connects Westeros to the Far East.
