That is one serious subwoofer speaker. Looking at that cone surround and magnet, I assume it can traverse to Denver and back in milliseconds. When I was a young lad building my own speakers in the early 1970's from purchased drivers and using my college shop to make cabinets, I would have loved to have had the driver tech of today and the knowledge I have gained about crossover design back then.

Designing a cone driver is a combination of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and human perception. It is a science and an art. A conducting coil of a driver counteracts against the driving electric current, it stores the energy, it shifts the current phase that creates distortion. It has a mass to move with that a designer has to tackle it's inertia and momentum during the coil movement, that will create distortion and delay either. A designer has to deal with the uniformity of its energy dispersion and of course heat dissipation and efficiency. Chris has been doing great work.

It should be noted, that the two mentioned scandinavian manufacturers of drivers do make modifications to their official program of drivers. Those modifications are made in co-operation with the customers enginers, and can be just small variations to the standard program, or nearly completely different drivers. Special custom made drivers are delivered exclusively to the speakersystem manufacturer.

I live in the UK and started out buying only UK made Hifi, that is components entirely manufactured and assembled in the UK. This is very difficult to do nowadays as many UK brands are assembled in China. My newest speakers are a pair of stand mount Serhan Swift MU2 mkll speakers made in Australia. These have Scanspeak drivers made in Denmark. Boy, they sound wonderful and better than the UK made B&W 804 diamond floorstanders I had! 😀

I believe B&W are (or at least have been) using some sourced stuff from mfg like Dr Kurt Muller, can't recall the details now. 🤔 I guess it's a matter of where the line is drawn, no one can make every last detail in-house, and at that point they will look for what suits the project. 😄 Scanspeak is nice, I'm using a combination of drivers from them and SB Acoustics (Sinar Baja Electric) right now. 🔊🎶

The answer to the second question is the latter. They would have to expand their facility a ton to have room for driver manufacturing. It's the same with the cabinet, which is understandable if one looks at video tours of places like Focal (which makes nearly everything in house in two pretty large factories), which are available on KZbin.

Many companies use a third party manufacturer but that manufacturer builds the driver to the customers specs. That’s a common practice in most manufacturers in most industries.

I think I was the first buyer of FR30 in germany and was happy with the FR30 until I did listen to other brands in that price area. I noticed that something is really wrong with my speakers. The local distributor will come to my place next 1-2 weeks and do some mic measurements of all freq. Something is wrong with my FR30. They are a bit to harsh in the highs and only can go really deep in bass, but the in-between from low mids to bass is almost not there, only a mild breeze compared to other big speakers which totally shocked me. Some did say your speakers can´t do bass, but I showed them some electronic music when deep bass is fast triggert and that hit very well, needs high volume but still, that worked. Acoustic Guitars or bass guitars totally miss the bass part, the woofers aren´t doing much which is totally strange, same goes for big orchestras, really under-performing there. This can´t be right because you praise Chris knowledge so often. I hope this problem can be solved, these speakers are way to beautiful to replace them with something else, and I would lose a lot of money too.

I'm not sure of the price, so it might some other speakers he's talking about, but I believe Sonus Faber have used off the shelf driver from Scanspeak and Audio Technology. You're absolutely right though that when they order large quantities then they'll often get at least a few things changed to match up as good as possible. Audio Technology even offer a whole range of options/combinations for regular customers (in a way others do to but they give each combination a new name instead). I guess there's a difference as well in how much they rely on engineers from a company like Scanspeak, some might draw from their experience and knowledge to do everything, or assist, or design to desired spec.

So when you blow a speaker and need a replacement driver. You have to go to this one company, and they say they are no longer available. "Why", you ask. And they say, "well, they never really sold many, so they just quit making them". Great, now what are you supposed to do? You spent $3500 on a set of speakers that are no longer serviceable, which makes them totally worthless unless someone out there can tear the driver apart, re-wind the voice coil to exactly the original, then put it all back together to exactly the original mfg specs.. Or you just toss out $3500 because they now have a whole new $4200 set of speakers they want you to buy. Edit: I think every speaker over $1000 each should come with every spec for each driver imaginable. So 35 years from now, when you need a replacement driver, you at least have something to go on.
