Jon - I am a 70 year old life-long lover of Garner, Ellington, Basie, Hines and Brubeck. As a piano player, you are welcome to enter my galaxy. As an educationalist, you teach me things I should have appreciated years ago. You are a star!

I, too, am older(87) and can say IMO Batiste is clearly a protege who belongs with those you mention - plus the other greats we both recall. He will keep our favorite form of music alive - and well - thank goodness. He is blessed🥹 … and so are we listeners‼️

Jon's knowledge of music is so damn deep. He knows his music history, and he seem to have photographic memory of tunes. The one last year, he was like "Oh we never rehearsed this" and then man played like you are listening to recorded album

My big complaint about the Late Show is that we never get to hear Jon Batiste for more than a few notes--never an entire tune, since he mostly plays for the studio audience, while the TV audience just sees ads.

Victor Kong sadly some of us that are not in the US don't get to go to a taping :( that's why I appreciate mini-concerts like this video where we get to hear him play!
@olive4naito
@olive4naito 7 жыл бұрын
Judith Ames Whitenack I can understand why they haven't had him play like this on the show. If he doesn't keep it minimal, every other musician they invite to perform would be overshadowed. It would be good for him, but all eyes would be on him and him alone. That could be disastrous for the show and what it stands for.
@conancat
@conancat 7 жыл бұрын
olive4naito you know what, you're right, that makes perfect sense. There are celebrities, then there are artists. People will inevitably make comparison between the two, and it wouldn't be good for business.

recently discovered Jon Baptiste, though I did see the movie Soul and liked it, but I did not put the two and two together. He reminds me about James Booker (when he plays piano) and James Brown or Prince (when he performs). Seeing his down to earth life in American Symphony made me curios and now I am listening to whatever I can find....

Louis' first horn came up much before his time in the Waif's Home. He was there twice, at age 9 and then 12, but he had his first horn at age 7 when working for the Karnofsky family. Their father paid for it and Louis paid back 50 cents/week. Secondly, his shooting a gun occurred on New Year's Eve 1913, not July 4 as stated by Jon. It was not a BB gun but his father's much more dangerous pistol, which he fired into the air in the streets in celebration of New Year's. A white police officer commandeered him and the next day he was in the Home, until age 14 and-a-half.
